Well done Simon Goodwin, you magnificently set Jeffo up for a massive failure by selecting him on zero form last week. And guess what happened? He failed. Just SHOCKING player management.☠️

He’s 3 years in the system. Time to put his big boy pants on

Not if he hadn't had form to warrant selection in the first place. I'll double down on this! Meanwhile Fritsch and Spargo's STELLAR form ( NOT) is perrenially rewarded!

I am not sure what Fritta can do less, than his miserable latest games, to get dropped.

Simon does have favorites, no doubt.

I would have played Sestan for Fritta. Sestan needs a chance and Fritta needs a message.

when sestan played up fwd he did f all, he looks fantastic down back so lets leave him there, none of this turner and petty bs and switching them every second game

This was a list management decision. The end of season review indicated that we required another young KPFpushing through.

We went super hard to acquire a pick to get Cadman as a result. Failing that, the club tried to move into the top 10.

I don’t think JT was Jeffo’s biggest cheerleader internally but after the top 8-9 picks it was a lottery so they went with who they thought was the best chance to be an AFL KPF.

I’ve always been of the thought that he should’ve stayed on the skinnier side and developed a bigger tank to be a young Cam Bruce style. Sigh.

It was a pretty bad draft. Tsatas went 5 after all. Makes my kicking as a mid forties bloke look elite.

Did everything we could to get Bailey Humphrey that year

I don’t rate Jefferson at all but I do agree with Picket, in that as a manager/coach you need to put players in the best position to succeed. Selection is one way to do that.

I look at players get game after game for no apparent reason or get rushed back with no competitive play in the bank in Fritsch, Spargo, Turner, Salem, Tholstrup, Petty, McAdam and in this case, Jefferson. It doesn’t help the teams continuity and in the younger players case, it doesn’t help their development.

It also sends a strange message to the rest of the playing list. Especially when the senior team is not winning and the players and coaches are doing the same thing expecting a different result.

Quite possibly

Yep this is a Goodwin trademark - rush back players who either have no form or are not fully fit.

Well done Goodie.

Whilst I certainly question selection and management over the journey Jefferson needs to show some toughness. We all know it, the club knows it, worst of all he knows it. It’s shows through so clearly

Sestan was drafted as a forward and yes has been playing back for Casey.

I would imagine he could match Fritsch with 4 possessions and missing two sitters with his boy 2 kicks last week.

And then Goody would be rightly lambasted for not setting him up for success by playing him in defence at VFL level and playing him as a forward at the next level.

Sestan for Fritta wouldn't have been a good move IMO. But I would have dropped Fritta.

Very interesting. Thanks for the insight. (I thought the one they wanted badly and were desperate to trade up for was Humphrey.)

Statement of the bleeding obvious, but Cadman would have been great.

Funny to look back and see the widespread enthusiasm for players like Tsatas. Everything's relative, I guess: he may well have looked exciting in what turned out to be an extremely shallow draft.

1 more year I believe.

He’s never shown enough at vfl level to warrant selection, at this point it’s just giving him a few games and hoping for the best. If we wait for him to earn it the day might never come and then everyone will criticise Goodwin and the club for never trying him. It’s a lose lose situation

Totally agree. . If he has some of Roo's devil may care he might be a very different player but all too often looks like a deer in headlights out there.

Not all are at home on the big stage. He strikes me as one. Bit of a shame as he has ability. Not always enough.

Give the poor kid a bit more of a chance.

Still way too early to write him off.

Played a handful of senior games.

Agree LITD when our list was a lot stronger young players had to knock the door off its hinges down at Casey, IE Sparrow and JJ. Gifting them games when they haven’t earned it sends the wrong message and is a disservice to the player that is trying to find form at VFL level. I really want to see some discipline from our selection committee only reward effort, hunger and a desire to win. There are kids that are having a red hot crack every week they are the ones that need to be rewarded. I really admired Robert Walls (RIP) but I believe that was one of his mantra’s, if you don’t have a dig you don’t get a go. Not sure about bringing out the gloves on training nights would get the nod today but who knows.

This is the crux of selection problems at Melbourne, last year in the later half of the year JEFFO DID show form and was NOT rewarded with selection. What a waste, perfect opportunity to blood him when he was in form but save for emergencies this was not done, Goodwin again playing favourites. So your argument is not supported. This year he has shown almost zero form other than some glimpses in his first game. So on merit he should NEVER have been in line for selection last week but he was and performed poorly. But Goody CLEARLY plays favourites, Fritsch, Spargo, Chandler was given an extended run last year on no form, and Fritsch this year has been abysmal! He has the propensity to stick with out of form players and rush back those with serious injuries before time at Casey. Sestan , Laurie and Brown HAVE shown some good form and have been ignored, PFFFT. He and selection comittee have set Jeffo up for failure and in so doing have done him or the club NO favours.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
