Well given the departures of Majak Daw and soon to be Sam Weideman, many of us are rightfully thinking about what ruck depth the club will have after Gawn and Grundy. With injury doubts over how much footy Tom McDonald and Ben Brown will play next year, let alone Gawn and Grundy who have their own injury issues, the club needs another ruck ready to go should the opportunity arise, which it may well.

With the ruck duo of Gawn and Grundy kicking off next season, the club also has the issue of identifying what player would want to come to the club to be 3rd in line behind the two dominant rucks of the last 7 years??? The answer is probably no one, which is why either with our final national draft pick or in the Rookie draft is where we'll have to land this player IMO.

One such player who has been mentioned a couple of times on here is Harry Boyd from Norwood in the SANFL. 198cm, 108kg, 24 years of age who can also play key position at either end and was named ruck in the SANFL team of the year after playing most of his previous football in Victoria.

I believe Jade Rawlings has been his coach the last few years, so we should be able to get some good intel.

Curious as to others thoughts?

I've stayed away from the 'just asking for it' world of opinions on players and prospects (I did get close with Clarry after seeing his highlights the week before his draft) but, here goes:

Add this to impressions you might get from MAH's postings:

https://sanfl.com.au/league/news/harry-boyd-wins-2022-jack-oatey-medal/

Matches Weid for height, approaches Jackson for follow-up, and better hands, and has Gawn-like presence and, now, experience. Victorian. Tree trunks like J.Nicholls, too.

So what would he cost at the draft?

Why not look at this man for next season.

On his way to a Magaery medal in the SANFL.

Absolutely killing it in the ruck.

Might have been approached but not interested, who knows find out.

Jade Rawlings is still his coach, so still has contacts at the Dees.

We are crazy if we do not ask the question on Big Harry, 26 y.o ready to rock n roll in the big time.

Magarey Medalist mind you.

What does he have that Will Verrall doesn’t have at that level allowing for the difference in age/experience ?

I would have thought if we are looking at a back up ruck they need to be 200cm plus

2 inches taller than JVR. Jack Oatey medallist (BOG) in 2022 Redlegs premiership, playing ruck.

Age, experience, mature game fit body,

all good no that’s great in a backup but would he be interested

have we asked the question

and it would be via the draft.   Others might need him as well

Had a bit to do with him through the bushies. Came through with the likes of Clayton Oliver and Josh Schache.

Absolute man mountain in terms of his physical presence. Very Lloyd Meek like.

Probably very similar to Meek in the way that he plays. He works hard both ways and can take a good contested grab at times.

Bit of a journeyman, came through with the Shepparton Bears then transitioned to VFL level where he had some stints with Werribee playing as a CHB.

Made the move to Norwood where he's played primarily as a ruckman and has dominated.

Very proud to see how much he's improved and hope he gets a shot at it because he's a genuinely good bloke and an incredible hard worker.

Great to hear that @dazzledavey36 we a missing a trick here if we don't ask the question here.

He has a presence about him.

Alot of Lloyd Meek about him and has been dominating the 2nd best league around.

Takes marks around the ground and has forward craft at Full forward which we are crying out for.

Deserves a chance, can't see another ruckman outside of 6-8 ruckman in the AFL that can match his output, he has developed out of sight.

The numbers he has put up this year and since he came to play for Norwood in 2022 have been incredible.

Not sure if we can really compare a 203cm player with one that is 198cm. It’s a matter of scale.

People on here have been calling out that Verrall is too short - but now they’re suggesting someone smaller?

Seems like he can take a mark, but he is always the biggest dog in the comp. That won’t happen over here.
If he’s mobile enough, he might slot into a chb/fb position, but would probably get monstered by McKay or run off his feet by Cameron etc like most players.

We have Tom Fullarton on our list and a developing Will Verrall who is 20 yrs of age they are nowhere near the standard of Harry Boyd who is 26 yrs old.

Just stats alone tell you the story, vision of Harry in big games tells you an even bigger story.

How many Ruckman/Forwards win Best player in a competition medals over a season theses days?

He is what we have been looking for after Jackson.

He could prolong Gawny's career by 2-3 years easy, $150/250k for a 2 year deal.

What have we got to lose?

Look at Hawthorn they took low draft/trade risks and they are paying off handsomely, this could be the case with Harry.

Would be a wise investment and cost us virtually nothing in terms of a trade or drafting.

Harry Boyd

He doesn’t sound like he is desperate to play AFL in this interview- sounds like he likes the level at Norwood and concentrating on his studies which are his “main” focus

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
