Perhaps unsuccessful clubs like ours sometimes can’t handle success eg the May issue

Surely the 'May Issue' has been overblown. No matter what the sport, what the circumstances, if you get a bunch of blokes together, when alcohol is involved, there is and always will be a potential for fireworks. It's hard enough to get a man and his wife to not niggle the bejesus out of each other during their 'team' internment, let alone a room full of Catholic Bishops from different diocese's, let alone a bunch of young blokes, all from different backgrounds and cultures. You imply that all 'Happy' teams contain no friction or personality clashes. May and Melksham are mates again, from what I gather.

On the topic of culture, I think we have serious issues with our leadership at the top.

I’m reliably told Roffey has met with another club president recently, who found her to be “difficult & awkward.”

My own experiences have left me less than impressed, including Roffey talking down about Casey, and Pert saying Casey are lucky to have us.
I recall a leadership conference for businesses in the Casey area run by Pert, where he espoused aspects of the culture at the club as exemplars and tried to get club staff in attendance to speak... but they all declined when put on the spot, as they didn’t want to have to announce they felt the opposite of what he was spruiking was actually true.

Beyond that, we have little movement at the station in regards to a new training & administrative venue, to bring us under one roof instead of 26 scattered offices.

I think our time at the top is likely over & the long contracts will weigh heavy around our necks, unless there is some significant change to come.

Ah yes the old, "Why doesn't this female exec let me do and say whatever I want?" criticism.

couldn't disagree more about our leadership - what you have said is contrary to everyone i know who has ever had any dealing with roffey, including myself and close acquaintances in business

she and pert have also CONSTANTLY talked up a whole of club approach encompassing off field, afl, aflw, and vflw

your experiences fortunately are nothing like others

@Mach5 hasn't exactly been neutral on this topic in the past.

That said, I have no inside knowledge and have no way of knowing who is right/wrong.

Clearly Roffey has pushed Mach5 in a puddle or something as he used to be one of my fav  posters.

Now, our time at the top is likely over because another president doesn't like Roffey.

I mean FMD.

I know you hate Pert but are you going start on Kate Roffey now. Everyone is difficult and awkward at times. I'm difficult and awkward if I don't have my morning caffeine hit.

The reason we didn't go further this year is because our best players were beaten up after a long campaign last year, straight into this year. Our incredibly tough fixture in the 2nd half of the year compounded this.

We gambled heavily on making top 4 and winning the first final.  We achieved the former but missed the latter. We really needed another week off.

We moved Brayshaw into the midfield because Clarrie, Trac and Viney were so banged up and that was a good move I hope we persist with next year.

You can say we should have used Chandler, JVR and Dunstan to give players a rest, but I don't think they would have enabled us to win enough to make top 4.

We could have accepted that we'd have to win it from outside top 4.  Maybe that would have been more prudent.

Our game plan is super taxing and that makes it very hard to back up. Very few teams have gone back to back after their breakthrough year.  The way we play we can win more flags but don't expect consecutive ones.

We don't have a culture problem.  Look no further than the Dogs, Port and Essendon for last year's finalists with culture problems.

Look at Casey this isn't a club with culture problems.

Maybe the OP would be happier down at Linton St.

Counted at least 7 senior listed players at Ikon Park today supporting our guys and around 8 former players.

Definitely crap culture.

Gawn, Bowey, Salem, Fritsch, Harmes, Yze, Spargo... Was Simon Goodwin there?

Not sure but pretty sure Chocco was.

Had an interesting  convo with a club insider during the Casey grand final.

Said we had too many players carrying injuries into the finals in Lever, Salem, Petracca , Jackson , B. Brown and Oliver, and that Fritsch who couldn’t jump because of a knee issue and Gawn with a sore foot shouldn’t have even played.

Reckons that bar injury we will be back with a vengeance next year.

Also said Joel Smith was offered a contract on low money which he didn’t accept and almost went to Sydney who offered him a 3 year deal.( Longmire is his godfather).

MFC came back and upped the offer so he decided to stay.

I’m absolutely neutral, in that I don’t have any personal dislike for either of these people. But the evidence just keeps piling up and I’m concerned with the future success of the club above all else. I don’t believe they’re the right people to take us forward, they’ve just benefited from the work of those before them.

Difficult & awkward is only the beginning, but it should be enough. “Hard to like” was another quote.

Of Roffey, I’d say her greatest strength has been the fact she is not Glenn Bartlett. I’m not sure what else she’s got.

Yep, the hidden injury list has not been taken into account by a lot of gloomers and doomers on this site.

I’d say maybe I’ve been relayed accounts of and exposed to more of their “real” selves in that case.

so you're going on pure hearsay then?

Not at all. There’s 2 factors there. What I’ve been exposed to and opinions of others to boot, i.e. it’s not my perception alone.

And where is it? You continually make these statements without ever showing any examples

It's Game Day and the Demons will be running out on the field with a new Head Coach, albeit a caretaker, for the first time in 3,060 days when they face the Western Bulldogs at the MCG today. What do you want to see from the Demons in the first match of the Post Simon Goodwin era?

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.

  • PREVIEW: Western Bulldogs

Long ago and far away, the Melbourne Football Club replaced its coach in difficult circumstances after the team suffered a devastating loss. In the aftermath, I penned the following words: “Then came the politics, the intrigue, the axing, the sound of the football world laughing at a club, the circling of the media vultures, the reinvention of history, the anger, the irony, the pathos, the hurt on the face of the president, the dignified departure of the coach, and the determination of the newly appointed caretaker.” Today, we’re back in the same place although one difference here is that the coach who was terminated this time is Simon Goodwin, the man who four years ago

  • REPORT: West Coast

The Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, opens with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, …”  This phrase highlights many of the significant challenges that humanity encounters in life, ranging from experiencing remarkable highs to living in times of despair. This is a concept that should resonate with all supporters of the Melbourne Football Club this morning as they reflect on its comprehensive 83-point victory over the struggling West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. The outcome proved beyond doubt that they are the worst of clubs and that we are the best of the worst.
