Oh FFS, a bye!  A few of our Casey players must be thrilled (not) to sit out a weekend rather than push their cases for selection. JVR, Laurie, Chandler, etc. Hopeless fixturing.

Yep, just scrap it, form new vfl with the victorian afl clubs and include the likes of Williamstown, Port Melbourne and perhaps Werribee then just leave it alone.

Basket case of a competition!

Well I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Casey also has a bye on the weekend of 6/7 August.

Then Carlton and Brisbane, I assume in Brisbane. Then finals.

3 Victorian sides have a bye. Why? When can we finally admit this competition hasn’t worked for 10 years and pack it in?

It's atrocious, especially from a skill level, the VFL has NEVER been as low skill, as it is this year.

Agree... packs on packs

Reduce players on field to 16 for the second half to increase skills. First half they can have 18 to emulate AFL if they have to

The VFL bye may have been co-ordinated with our Alice Springs game so the whole squad can travel there for community involvement.

And these atrocious byes is something that we may have to look forward to if Gillon gets his 19th team,  in Tasmania.

We'll need two byes for every team unless we reduce the season to 18 games

No thanks

In the VFL the byes are a function of trying to reduce costs

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
