Farewell Brodie Grundy

Ouch!

Grundy has not been in the Best 22, since early in the Season. We have all seen that. But this is September, and I hope The Selectors seriously consider Brodie, in the 23 as a Back up for The Ruck duties.

Max Gawn will be targeted, Hit hard, repeatedly by opponents. We must be proactive in countering this. I will be very disappointed and angry if Grundy is in the Grandstand whilst Max is copping Physical assault.

Prepare to be disappointed and angry…

…and whatever emotion is left because I still think we’ll win…

…horny?

Gawn is an adult.

He's copped the physical attention all his career and has 6 All Australians to back up his performances.

He'll be right.

By Gawn learning to play with a second ruck again.

He needs a chop out but we always needed a forward who can ruck and not a flat out ruck - Goodwin thought in 2022 that we could turn Gawn into that forward who rucks and it was a mistake. A mistake that Gawn can’t stop waxing lyrical about. Just go and get that forward who can ruck. Got plenty of cash (if Grundy leaves), picks and clout - just get it done.

Out injured?

This September or next?

ps TMac is also likely to be out injured...this game or next.

Yeah it's obscure.

Grundy is an AA footballer currently on the MFC list.

TMac imo is about 2 games away from another career ending injury and Gawn is too old to return from any serious knee / leg injury to any real level.

Why get rid of Grundy?

It's only a matter of time before they need him or someone like him, and sooner rather than later.

Find a way to make it work ffs

He’s not playing AFL and he is on $650k, if he was in good form he would be playing.

Im sorry but reality doesn’t see what you see.

I’m not convinced you are correct. I think he’s now worth more than we paid last year and it’s not relevant. We paid for a ruckman that had a massive injury cloud over him and was only fit sporadically for over more than 12 months. He has low proven to be fit and capable, only being kept out of the side by the league’s best ruckman and the fact he’s an ordinary forward. He’s also worth a lot more to Port than he was to us (back-up vs missing piece).

I think we will work to get him to Port if it’s his preference, but should be asking for a pick around 20 and not pay a cent of his salary going forward.

Port can play hardball but that will only bring Sydney into play as a real option.

More than that we need another backup, if Gawn went down round 1 next year we would be screwed unless we can secure someone else. Unless we can find someone and at net be no worse off we should hold onto Grundy until such a time as we can fill that gap.

He will have a preference and we hopefully want to free up the cap space for first 18 player - both things negate whatever increase in value Grundy has seen in this ‘fit and capable’ year.

Absolutely Garbo.

We move on Grundy if and when we have a PLan B for Max backup, otherwise we lose our once-in-a-generation midfield opportunity. JT may be working on this aspect.

Football is a business, as Grundy himself noted. We are not duty-bound to get him a game elsewhere unless it is detrimental to the clubs internal culture and he needs to move on.

If it was to be dry (and probably not) I could see Grundy playing this week.

SWYL the overriding feeling I have with this game is that if the worst happens, the very last thought I want to have is whether we could have used Grundy in this game.

Strategically I probably wouldn't consider this but finals are much more than strategy. If Max does get romped and stomped and we've got this guy in the stands who used to give all these rucks bath time routines at training it won't sit well. We've also got some great intel on those guys and can maybe push their buttons for a change. Mason Cox needs to become the hunted, he's had a free run as hunter for way too long.

Not saying he should be in the 22 but for me this is why you have a tactical sub.

Yes. I want Cox Targeted. Exactly. He has sent Max to the Bench before

Have Grundy ready….

On that, consider a hypothetical where Gawn goes down with an ACL during the finals series.

Do we stick with Grundy, who surely will have made plans elsewhere and have a foot out the door, but may be willing to stay?

Or do we abort the pick 1 attempt & go chips in for a proper longterm ruck solution like Sean Darcy?

For mine that would dovetail nicely with Kalani White’s entry to the list. No pressure kid.

So easy to say, so hard to do.

Who?

Even harder to quote.

I don’t know - anyone who is a chance of playing in the team would be a start.

Grundy is a competitor. If a spot opened up to go and win a flag you don't think he'd give it his all to win one? Of course he would.

He's 29, this may well be his only chance.

I have no doubt that if Gawn is injured Grundy will come straight in and give it 100%!

Yeh, I'm not much good posting from a phone!  But I think finding the appropriate person would be harder!

Look, I agree Grundy is gone, we mightn't get much, but finding a best 22 player is not easy given our depth.  Most of our best 22 have good contracts.  IMO more likely we'll look for a player like Flynn who isn't a forward but can play in Max's spot if he's injured.

Veteran Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin returned to the training track to bring you the following observations from Gosch's Paddock this morning. Beautiful morning for training. Melky weighted and change of angles work. Salem has his individual program. White cap (no contact), Howes, Woewodin and Sparrow

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th
