This is shaping up to be the most compromised draft since GC/GWS were brought into the competition.

Its turning into a FARCE.

If North get pick 3 compensation or assistance its around a possible 6 out of the top 20 either Nothern Academy, FS or Priority/compensation.

There are some really good prospects in the top 10. We need to trade up for a second top to pick (likely GC's).

I agree that this Draft is turning into a complete farce.

If North are able to pre-list Ryley Sanders who Cal Twomey currently ranks at No. 7 and potentially get Pick 3 as free agency compensation for Ben McKay, they'll have picks 2, 3 & 7. What they actually should be getting if there was any fairness in the system and we don't rewarrd mediocrity is maybe 2, 19 (end of 1st round compensation for McKay), 2nd & 3rd round 2024 special compensation picks that they have to trade for players (same as last year). Gold Coast will get Jed Walter, Ethan Reed & Jake Rogers as Northern Academy selections (Twomey ranks them 2, 9 & 12). Western Bulldogs Father/Son Selection Jordan Croft (11).

Melbourne currently has picks 5, 15, 24, 34 & 89.  15 & 34 are based on our current 4th ladder position and clearly we all hope they become 18 & 37. I'm hoping that 5 & 24 will end up 4 & 23. So maybe it ends up 4, 18, 23, 37 & 89. We clearly need to trade up because at the moment picks 4, 18 & 23 are likely to become a compromised 6, 23 & 28. Gold Coast will be looking to trade out their top pick (4 or 5), Western Bulldogs 11 & maybe 17 so there should be opportunities.

We would still get a very good quality player at 6 eg Nick Watson or a Caddy. Then at 18 & 23 we will get another good players think Rivers etc...

From those looking for a key defender outside of Curtin. @dazzledavey36 may have some further insights.

Love the look of O’Sullivan at a time when we really need to be mindful of succession-planning for May.

I imagine it’ll involve Petty returning to the backline with Lever to guide a young tall. COS fits the bill for my liking.

Yep agreed. If we wind up with our pick being in the 15-18 range and don’t trade it, he’d be one I hope slips to that range for us. Promising tall defender with good size and ability who fills a longer term need.

Correct. That's one of the avenues they are requesting to be a part of their assistance package.

As you stated, under current rules they wouldn't be able to match a bid within the top 40. North are hoping to circumvent that with their assistance package by pre-listing him, meaning they won't even have to use draft points at all. He'll just be on their list come the end of draft night.

Suns got a similar deal when the were able to pre-list Alex Davies and Joel Jeffrey.

So being gifted maybe a Top 7 player is only part of their assistance package? Unbeleivable! And no doubt getting a 1st round selection straight after North's current selection would not even be considered as part of the assistance package. I think Gold Coast's position is very difference from North Melbourne's. There are significant disadvantages to overcome for them and it's important to the AFL's mational strategy that they succeed. In North Merlbourne's case surely it's just general mediocrity. You need to provide equal opportunity for clubs but you can't basically keep gifting them concessions.

The problen isn't with 18 & 23. As I said, at the moment those selections will effectively be 23 & 28 as every Northern Academy, Father/Son, Pre-Listing, & Free Agency Compensation Pick pushes back the Picks you have actually earned through ladder position & previous trading.

If we trade for Gold Coast first round pick we could pick him up with whatever pick ends up being our second assuming Curtain doesn’t slid.  Agree with others that a quality back should be one of our priorities.
In a perfect world the Suns will move up the ladder a couple of spots making their pick more obtainable for us and bang on where COS is likely to go.
Cal has him at number 10 but there’s a chance that there could be 3 academy picks before him which brings him into about the 7th live pick.
Can’t see him sliding to where our current second pick is.

Cal Twomey said on Gettable he is confident the top 5 are Reid, McKercher, Duursma, Curtain, Watson in some order to be determined.

Isn't the go home factor something to take into account with McKerchin. I would have thought once the Tassie team is recruiting he'd be a real danger of going. Especially if they get the right to take a contracted player from each club. As in Scully to GWS. Personally I wouldn't roll the dice on this risk.

I don't think you can worry about that, Tassie is still years away, take the best and if they do get scalped then we get some big compensation and hopefully some good years out of them for another granny.

perhaps that's why they're saying that they're only prepared to deal with north at this point in time, as they don't want to slide further back in the draft and risk missing the local kid

Increasingly looking like we’d need to deal with North to stand a chance of getting Reid even if we had both Freo and Suns first round picks

Curtin far too promising to slide to pick four or five, especially when North will be in dire need of defenders when McKay departs

Not convinced they’re going to get a band 1 compo pick for McKay so they may have some interest in splitting 2 for multiple top 10 picks, but beginning to look like Reid may just be a bit too far out of reach unless we can do some serious wheeling and dealing

There’s zero chance North/Clarko have any dealings with us

I think North are in a very strong position.  They can tell WC that they'll take Curtin at 2, which would make perfect sense for their list needs.  WC can either take Reid or Curtin at 1 or trade with North, who I'm sure will be very happy to take Reid, for 2 and something, and take Curtin with 2.  North won't have to sell the farm in the trade because they have a strong position with 2.

I think therefore that Reid and Curtin are out of reach for MFC and Walter goes to GC.  From Cal's top 5, that leaves Duursma, McKercher and Watson in the range of our first pick.

Agree that it’s unlikely but is there a particular reason they wouldn’t deal with us specifically?

Unless we can tempt North ( com'on Todd mate) with a bounty and trade for pick 2. It then put us in the above position??????

If we can get hold of GCS pick would north swap 2 for 4 and 5????

It's great to be in this kind of position where we will be able to draft or trade in some quality this year (after a solid year and a number of promising youngsters developing in the VFL).

Assuming Petty is able to get on the park next year and play forward (and the likes of May and Max can keep up their form), the main glaring weakness I think is some more outside run with excellent finishing skills.  When we drafted Bowey and Laurie, that was the plan.  Potentially Bowey could be tried at half forward to play that role.  I'm not convinced Laurie is going to make it with us.

I get you go best available at the pointy end, but from what I've seen none of Reid, Curtin, Watson fill the need we need most (not saying I wouldn't want us to draft them).  Who at the pointy end best suits our list if we're in win now mode?

Talk that Hawks keen on Duursma.

Roos just need to say to Eagles take Curtin and we take Reid or the reverse.

That way Roos get Reid and keep compo for McKay, probably end of Round 1 and maybe get Sanders from NGA, as special assistance.

We could therefore be looking at next cab off the rank, if Dockers lose next two and Suns beat Roos in last game.

I'm not really understand why we would swap 4 + 5  for 2. If the AFL points equivalent is anything to go by 2 is worth the equivalwnt of 11 + 13. Now I wouldn't agree with that but I reckon 4 + 5 is way over the odds for 2.

Just listening to SEN and a WA presenter stating that West Coast still strongly considering Reid despite speculation about him not wanting to go to WA. He also highlighted Curtin and Duursma as players they are interested in.

You’d think they would have to throw in Port’s first rounder (currently 16) to make it worthwhile from our end - otherwise you’re right, it’s way overs and wouldn’t get us any closer to a deal for pick 1 as we’d need at least another first round pick to even remote West Coast

Isn't it in WC's interest to say they are "strongly considering" Reid whether they are or they aren't just like North / us / Hawthorn etc saying they're strongly considering Curtin?

Similarly seemingly someone (from Reid's camp?) has put it out there that he doesn't want to go to WA.  He'll deny it publicly of course as he doesn't want to look like a prima donna... but West Coast would know whether or not it is true.

This time of year is all smoke and mirrors if it helps you get what you want.
