Just on this, I really respect Bowey for staying at Cheltenham. He had offers for private schools, but wanted to stick with his mates and come out of the public system. I wouldn't say it's harmed his football at all...

If Mitchell Edwards is that well rated, surely West Coast will split their first pick and go Curtin and Edwards, providing they can get Curtin before anyone else.

Seems like a horrible draft this year due to the amount of potential top 20 players tied to academy and other bids. Also a few Tassie boys, which clubs will be hesitant to draft high due to the AFL flipping the bill to send them down to the new Tassie team in a few years.

If that predicted top 20 a few posts back is roughly accurate, that's 7 out of the first 20 players compromised in a way. Trading up to get Reid or someone else we've got our eye on is probably the right tactic, or potentially trading out of this years draft to get a swag of first rounders for next years draft if there's less bid related players. Thoughts?

Absolutely insane! More than double what it was in my day and that wasn't cheap! It's great that you've put him on the list though.

My mum did some relief English teaching at McKinnon in the past, excellent public school from what I hear. You could do a lot worse.

I finished in '05. My dad used to like to remind me that Caulfield Grammar fees were $30K+ in those days (at Year 11-12).

I was 03. We used to write in our diaries how much it cost per day to go to Carey as a reminder every time we goofed off in class. Which is weird now that I think about it because it's not like the teachers made us do it!

Edwards is really good but West Coast picked up a ruckman in last years draft Harry Barnett. They need mids and some real hard nut competitors. They will look at Curtin as he can play both ends and through the middle. If that were to come to fruition it would be a good draft with Curtin and Hall, although really liked the look of Mckercher and Sanders from the allies. One who is attracting some attention is an unknown bolter just been pulled into the WA squad, Joe Fonti who is a very fast running half back who can take a contested mark. Foot skills are okay but improving, his line breaking running is what’s attracting recruiters and I reckon he’ll be picked up as a rookie by someone

I’m putting 2 through PSA in Perth, it’s killing the social life and upgrading the house (1980s ensuite is in need of being demolished) but it’s what you do for your kids. This is my last year paying 2 school fees thank god.

Each to their own but I recommend it if you can make it work the benefits have been fantastic for my boys

I got great friendships out of Caulfield, but it did nothing for my career (film producing) and in fact hampered it in some ways.

IMO I think it's about your child's interest.

I was so sick of sport after Caulfield, it took coaching to regain my love of it.

I'd prefer to give my kids $30k x 6 for a housing deposit (if we can afford it), but I may change as my son grows up.

Yep I hear you, different for all kids and families. Been good for both of them, they haven’t gone right through the oldest will have done Yr 10-12 and the youngest commenced half way through Yr 9. Whilst the sport is great, it’s the academic side where I have seen the benefits although my oldest had academic drive and would have done well at most schools.  All I will say mate as some advice is enjoy the journey of fatherhood and the time together.

I have a day off today and dropped my two boys to school this morning and just talked about life on the journey in, which is not something we do a lot of with the busy lives we have.  I had one of those life flashbacks watching the oldest walking off towards school and my mind went back to dropping the same boy off for his first day at kindy. I thought it would be great to do it all again with both of them

My time at Carey was pretty up and down and didn't have many long lasting friendships from school but the name did carry significance and it's nice to be able to say I went there. I also lost some passion for sport as the culture was a bit relentless especially in the rowing side of things. 

It's a big investment and down to the kid's interests as said but I do still admire Pennant and others who make the commitment. They're lucky to have you as parents.

I am not a draft expert, that said, It appears to me that this draft is excellent pool. I remember hearing in the past that if there are a mix of types, talls and mids throughout the draft that was a good sign. The other was that if VIC Metro and Country made up the bulk of the top selections then it was a weak draft. 

Early days with lots of junior footy to go, but with a strong Allies Team, strong SA team and a few high-end and other great prospects in WA, we have a really strong draft in terms of number of prospects that should go through. Gold Coast can't pre-list talent which is a plus, but there seems to be 3-6 potential father sons/academy prospects in the first round, three of which are for the Gold Coast Academy. The benefit being the Gold Coast have to actual bid on their academy players so they can't double dip like previous years.

I have said it before, but I see GWS getting Reid and giving both first rounders and also players to the Eagles.

The Eagles could turn pick 1 into Curtin and another WA player and also get 2 best 22 experienced AFL players form the Giants. 

That would go a long way to kick starting their revival.

They could then trade a player for more picks, added to the rest of their picks.

Yes, I think our best hope is if GC finish below GWS and we are able to trade with GC and get a better pick then the Giants. We then have to hope GC and Freos pick is better then GWS and Rich picks.

It’s certainly going to be a very interesting draft. Gold Coast will almost certainly trade out their first pick(currently pick 8) and I agree that West coast will look at splitting pick one.  Given there seems to be a lot of talent in the first round I wouldn’t be surprised if both North and Hawks would be open to splitting theirs. 
I’d love to see us trading our own first and Freo’s second round for the Suns first pick and have two top 10 picks this year. Although it may pay for us to split Freo’s  second pick before we deal with Suns.
