Speaking of Baxter tavern, one of my top 10 ever gigs was there in aprox 1990. Maybe top 5.

Long story, but I had a mate who lived in baxter who I'd often visit.

One of the all time great songwriters, Warren zevon was playing solo at, of all places, the Baxter tavern.

I went to my mates place with the plan to see the gig with my mate and another friend of ours.

Unbelievably, both friends ended up deciding to bail at the ast minute, even though Warren bloody zevon was playing just up the road.

So I went solo, and flying high I might add.

The first thing Warren would have done after the gig was sack his mananager for booking the gig.

The Baxter tavern is a sketchy beer barn that is, or was, in the middle of bloody nowhere, surrounded by paddocks - and it was a freezing winter night

I walked in just as Warren say down at a grand piano.

There was maybe 15 other people there - and to be honest I felt embarrassed that so few people had comme to see a legend of music.

But he was incredible. Played wirh passion and verve, as if there were 10, 000 people there. Masterful.

I could walk to the bar, get a pot and back to my spot in under a minuter.

And my spot was almost right in front of him, so I could see close up his piano skills and hear his voice direct from the stage.

Noone bumping into me, none even close to where I was standing. It felt as if he performing just for me. He almost was.

He played for nearly two hours, and never once flagged or went through the motions. Gave me a cool nod when he finished

He was a brilliant writer, one of the sharpest and most intelligent in rock. Smart, funny at times, but also acerbic and often angry.

And in that environment, so close, and just him and his piano, the lyrics felt so powerful and personal.

And his voice was to die for - magnificent depth, so rich and emotive.

I feel emotional just thinking about it now, some 30 plus years later.

Transcendental experience.

It looks like Emirates is doing what the AFL failed to do:  Make Collingwood accountable.

“Emirates condemns disrespectful behaviour towards women. We are in dialogue with Collingwood Football Club on its response to the incident,” an Emirates spokesperson told The Age.de-goey-granted-personal-leave-

It is not the first time Collingwood sponsors have asked them for a 'please explain'.

Some news outlets are reporting De Goey was supposed to do a press conference today but didn't show up.  He has been given personal leave.  Whether he asked for it or is response to Emirates enquiries or to his no show is not known.

This is interesting considering the discrimination against women in the UAE.   eg, judges can decide if a married woman can leave the house to work or not.

*UAE have been making recent improvements but still

That’s ironic considering you’ve been the most offended on behalf of De Goey. But good news… at 7 posts and 5 replies you’re in the lead!

What this doorknob fails to realize is that, not only is he representing The Filth FC, he is also representing all of the Club Sponsors that appear on the board behind the Coaches Press Conference.

i bet they are all thrilled right now

Sponsors help pay the idiots wage….

i am so sick and tired of the “Mental Health Issues” card being bought up at every opportunity. I went to School with a lot of kids with Mental Health Issues and De Goey does not fit that category

Nope... it's not

Are you suggesting it's justified to persecute someone for a non-crime on the basis of previous acts where you think they got off "lightly"?

No. I’m suggesting he got away scot free after committing alleged crimes last time so he brought this attention on himself

show some contrition, take your punishment, mature and you’ll gain respect

I went to a school where most of the teachers had mental health issues and DG does definitely not fit that category either.

Completely agree on last time...

And I don't rate the bloke in the slightest

But I can't cop the argument that he should be punished for a non-event this time, because it makes Collingwood or AFL look stupid for not being stronger last time...

Imagine being let off with a warning for speeding one day, to then lose your licence for doing 97 in a 100 zone the next, because the cop felt silly for letting you off last time...🤦‍♂️

Never said he should be punished for the Bali.

He gets paid a huge inflated Wage, the catch is that he will, and so will all AFL Players, be heavily scrutinised for his actions on and off the field.
After what happened in the USA he needs to be a good boy.

Why have I been living my whole life without knowing its not illegal to pull down a woman's top? There are public and indecent exposure laws. Not to mention its a muslim country.  Its 100 percent illegal.  Whether she consents or not is not what makes it illegal. The act itself is illegal. She just chooses not to prosecute. If she did and if she was a local balinese, he'd potentially be in a jail cell right now.

But she wasnt so I agree its a bit of a witch hunt. Media needs to back off here. Definitely taking pot shots because they know it will get clicks.  Punishment should fit the crime.

Having R.E.M. in 1987 as his backing band probably helped.

Unsurprisingly the sensationalism and disproportionate outrage from content hungry media feeding off self-important woke do-gooders has created a situation too much for one 26 year old...

No doubt all backslapping each other now on the progress of this cancel culture take-down... 🙌

Remind me, what did he do that was illegal?

The content-hungry media bit you have right. This is a country that has more media covering AFL than federal politics. Such are our priorities. But that is the choice of supporters who buy newspapers for the AFL gossip/news or subscribe to Fox Sports. It is no coincidence that most of these are Murdoch owned. They are experts at manufactured outrage.

The media isn't feeding off woke do-gooders. The media are reporting a story that they believe will sell papers or subscriptions. For radio, the sheer number of numpties ringing talkback means that this is a significant issue. Collingwood is big news, de Goey has history . The fact that his thread is 11 pages should tell you it is in the public interest.

One other thing worth mentioning is public standards towards women have changed dramatically in recent years. What's happening in Australia is mild compared to Europe and the States. At some European or US clubs, de Goey would have been sacked without a second thought.

And lastly, so many people have no idea what 'woke' is! It is being aware of racial prejudice and discrimination.

De Goey created a situation of his own making. Stupid is as stupid does.

Why defend the meathead.  He has come back at Social Media saying it is a witch-hunt.

He now says he has mental health issues and tried to put off his masquerades into the i recently discovered i have ADHD category....This is an utter insult to anyone with mental health issues or ADHD, let alone the fairly obvious disrespect of women that seems to "gravitate" towards him.   He is a young man that by now should know much better.   I wonder what the women's teams think about it?  How about teammates wives?  How about all the sponsors?  How about most of the decent blokes out there not doing this dumb sort of stuff?.

You can add to all that with the fact that Collingwood don't trust him to answer questions from the Media as he just does not quite "get it".

And despite all that he will still get his 800K a year with a bunch of teams.  Just maybe not Collingwood now, this is far from his first slip up,  He does not deserve sympathy, it is all manifested by himself.

I think the most important thing to remember here is the boy plays for the filfth, ipso facto, he's brought the game into disrepute regardless of whether he put money into the church collection plate or not.

Posted (edited)

This may not be about illegal acts, but rather about behaviour that brings the AFL into disrepute. All AFL player contracts require the player to not bring the game/AFL into disrepute by their behaviour. It is a contractual issue. It is all to do with the image of the game and in the end revenues.

Pulling at the ladies’ top, oral sex mimicking and appearing drunk in a public place may be illegal in a Muslim country, or not, I don’t know, but the “look” was not one the AFL is happy about. That is the issue. If his “behaviour “ brought the game/AFL into disrepute he has a contract breach to deal with and that is what is happening here.

PS: For those attacking the media, it’s not like they dredge up private texts and club meeting notes from years ago, at a selected time when they can most hurt a club and attempt to bring the game into disrepute, or for days after a fight between players at a dinner, plaster it on the front pages, well after it is old news, to again attempt to bring the game into disrepute. Remember, as they will tell you, they don’t make news, they only report it.

The single biggest regular contributor to bringing the game/AFL into disrepute, is the constant highlighting of poor behaviour by the very media that lives off it.

For those that don’t believe that the media also deliberately creates controversy, in addition to just reporting events, I will be a late in for the Dees tonight.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
