I cannot get around the idea of Lyon being a rebuild coach. The guy walks into lists that are about to take off. Sure he may set good standards for the youngsters like Roos, I'm probably being harsh I just don't quite see it.

Funny comment from Robbo last night on 360, that he doesn't think Clarkson believes in the draft...in other words not a good rebuild coach.

...but then says that Lyon is the man for the job.

At least Clarkson did play a part in the Hawks list rebuild, Lyon as you say has always taken on mature lists.

Lyon wouldn't know a draft pick even if it smoked him in the mouth.

Go figure.

ridiculous comment!  Clarko would have ZERO flags without high draft picks.

Not alot different to when we retired Jr Mac and Cam Bruce went to the Hawks etc.

Yes lots of similarities between the two clubs back then.

Just not sure they will learn from our and now their own mistakes since unceremoniously dumping players.

Exactly...but it was made by Robbo so I guess it's par for the course.

...and as usual made without much thought.

I think the system rewards struggling clubs- ie. priority picks, parachuting in CEOs and Coaches etc. I can see them turning it around sooner rather than later

Maybe.  But when I heard their President say something like they do not need to make wholesale changes internally, I was worried for them.

Whereas we had a very clear plan and did make wholesale changes:

  • the board
  • a new CEO
  • new CEO recruited new executive managers (who are all still there)
  • a new coach
  • new coach recruited a permanent senior coach
  • new coach brought with him a experienced and reliable assistant managers
  • trained a new football manager under Roos' tutelage
  • we had a stable and well credentialed recruiting department (theirs resigned en masse last month).

A new coach, even if it is Clarkson won't solve their problems without the rest of the above 'package'

As they say, the fish rots from the head.

Noble is a tiny piece in a big puzzle of horse [censored]. No coach will come into North and succeed unless they have the balls of Clarkson and come with a long list of demands for changes from the top, just as Roos and Jackson did.

Their President said their CEO is staying.

Without changing the CEO the rest won't happen or if it does it will be piecemeal rather than a co-ordinated plan that is sustainable like ours was/is.

Also, Paul Roos has been paid a truckload by Norf as some sort of consultant.

The best thing Roos did for us was he took pressure off the club and was able to deflect a lot of the media scrutiny on us at the time.

He can’t do that for Norf in his current role (whatever it is).

Norf doesn't have Garrey Lyon either.

That should help them and it seems like Boomer is less up to his neck in the Club  chaos than  Connolly was..

Scott seems to have left a mess no matter the manner of his departure.

He played a hard ball better than most

Maybe they just are a crepe Club that never recovered from the man's man years under the real estate agent

Don't think so!

They had Archer at whose feet a lot of this mess lies.   He recruited both Shaw and Noble and oversaw the decimation of their list and turnover of their coaching panel.

Garry committed only one of those 'sins': recruiting Neeld, then was smart enough to stay out of the club.

Archer's impact was way worse than Lyon's. Hope their fans lynch him as much as we did Lyon.

The AFL would have had their say on our way forward, and they will review and guide north too.

There will always be a bottom side that is essentially on their knees. It's the Roos turn. I don't see a huge issue.

Without promotion and relegation, and having a draft system that incentivises clubs being dead last I just see this as part of the cycle of the system.

How can a Doctor run a club who has little to know idea about the game or inner workings of a sporting club at any sort of level.

Absolutely mystified by the level of unaccountability by the Norf hierarchy. They had to hire outside of the club to do the dirty work they were incapable of doing themselves.

Roosy sold Noble a 🍋 big time.

Knowhere to be seen old mate Roosy.

I would also like to know how this rabble of a club Norf have a decent training base and we have truck all in our preferred location? How can the AFL drop another cent into this stain of a club.

P.S Where are they going to find the extra 3-4 million from the tassie deal once it finishes up at the end of the year.

Well and truly screwed are the Shinboners.

So you're saying that "rock bottom" (capitalised for impact, no less) is, in fact, not as low as you can go. Good to know.🙂

This could be a thread on its own, but the AFL has announced a substantial increase in the soft cap. It goes up by $500,000 next year and a further $250,000 the year after. In addition, some costs associated with player welfare and mental health will be taken out of the soft cap limit. All of a sudden, it makes it easier for North (or anyone else) to consider Alastair Clarkson as the impact of his expected high remuneration is ameliorated by the increase in the soft cap.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
