Paul Williams was a quality player but is his coaching ability as good as his playing?

Its hard to tell at the moment but at the look at our midfield i have 2 say it is a large decrease from last years excellent form. Im sure its not all Pauls fault but he would have a fairly large influence. obvisouly. Anyway i hope that he soons tells the boys to stop doin this run and carry stuff and kick it long!!

Im just wondering whether this could have something 2 do with the bad form anyways ur thoughts?

There is no possible way an outsider can tell if the midfield (or any other specialist) coach is doing a good job or not.

We still get the great myth that the midfield has not been the same since Ratten left.

I think Rutten was a great coach but we cant help his loss and its too early to tell

Not sure if they swapped, but Mark Riley certainly went from backline coach to forward line coach. And certainly some of the midfielders feel they are benefiting from a player who is so recently out of a successful AFL club coming to coach them.

I often wonder how much of an influence can one coach have on a midfield (or anyone for that matter)?

Compared to how much of an influence is on the players attitude and ability.

For instance, taking the messiah's, messers Judd and Mclean, would a coach have much influence on their playing abilities? Obviously, the coaches have a structure in place which directs their role in the team, but other then that, do Judd and Mclean just play their natural game of footy? Much like they have for most of their lives. A coach like Matthews might instil (sp?) an attitude and directive of head-over-the footy type football which dictates that those who play under him must abide by these team rules, but how much of an influence would Leigh Matthews have on the likes of Jared Brennan or even Micheal Voss?

What i'm trying to get at is, IMO, footy players are naturally talented and gifted thus, i doubt that coaches have a great influence on how they go about playing footy.

But, as an exception to every rule, i remember (i think) reading last year that Nathan Jones had to 'learn' at Sandy how to be an inside mid. There goes my theory...
