surely he's going to be 'pup'

Or SOD?

The below sounds a bit nebulous but thought I’d share anyway….

I asked a mate who is a part time scout for an interstate club if he’d seen Kynan play. He has. “Shredded, slightly undersized inside mid who goes unnoticed for periods in a game due to his work at the contest”

Reckons he’s got some elite traits that will translate to AFL. Ball winning, mental toughness and vision but also thinks he should play half forward as he could be elite in that role. Pressure, tackling, vision and hard running.
He thought Kynan wouldn’t be a pure mid in the AFL and is not a 1st round talent at this stage. (For context there’s 10ish players he feels are definite 1st round locks with 20-30 players including Kynan to follow)

He also had no idea where the club he reports to rated him but they consider it a lock that we’ll take him in the 25-40 range which he thinks would be pretty good value from what he’s seen.

on a separate note, is Trav Johnstone’s kid still playing? I remember seeing a pic of him at the David Neitz Academy.

31 disposal and 11 tackles against Dandenong Stingrays last night.

Pretty much BOG.

My sister is a trainer at Oakley, says Kynan is under an enormous amount of pressure from his dad.

Not cool to hear.

Pressure to perform?  Because it’s pretty much guaranteed he’s getting drafted by us. So what’s the pressure about?

Exactly. I am confident we have told him he is a likely f/s, so it would be better to take him as late as possible. So we don’t need him starring every game.

personally i'd prefer if he was an elite talent and we could be confident in picking a father-son who was a class above players his own age

he doesn't sound like he's quite that but he's not exactly sounding like a player who won't be on an afl list in 2024

So you would rather we lose our first pick in the draft matching for him.

if he's a monty pick 1 selection, surefire raging favourite to go there - absolutely!

but he's not, and we won't, so it seems like an irrelevant thing to worry about

as up thread said, we're going to get a competent afl-list level second / third round selection from a father-son

happy days

He hasn't been told anything by the footy club. I do know this for a fact.

They've kept their cards close to their chest because they want to see Kynan perform at a consistent level before they make the call on him.

He's doing everything right so far but still has a bit to go especially with how he performs in the under 18's Championship carnival.

Fair enough. But given we drafted Woewodin who was not performing at anywhere near the level Kynan is, I would be shocked if we don’t draft him.
I guess it’s good the club isn’t letting him rest on his laurels thinking he’s got a spot on the list sewn up.

But my point is why would you want to give up a good pick, for a boy you could get later with a lesser pick.

My sister doesn’t give much away concerning the players at Oakley, she is very protective of her boys!
I’ll do my best to get some more information,  but she did let me know the club had to speak to Nathan about his attitude and the comments he was making, (he wasn’t impressed with the Oakley coaches), he was very vocal on the sidelines.

He wants the best for his boy - just needs to find a better way to deal with game day pressure.

Unfortunately I've come across so many parents like this especially in the junior development ranks. We've had disgruntled parents in the past being quite vocal from simply not making the cut in the Murray Bushrangers system.

You honestly feel for the kids because the fun gets taken out of them purely because they're faced with enormous and unnecessary pressure from their own parents.

He looks a likely sort. I take he’s a run and carry type with good disposal. Someone to feed the ball to?

As a volunteer goal umpire at U14 level, I've twice in the last 3 weeks I've had to tell parents on the boundary to STFU due to them gobbing off at the umpires, their kid and even the coaches (who are parents!). It's a blight on the game at junior level.

If jules7's post is accurate, Nathan should shut up and let the kid play in peace

Hard to tell from the outside if its actual pressure or him and his dad have that sort of relationship. Lots could be going on behind closed doors.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
