I wonder what's holding up the Hibberd signing?

This news makes things look not too great for Hore & Declase IMO.

I imagine a number of these guys were rewarded with ‘another chance’ because they were great club men whilst supporting the chosen ones during the finals campaign

I could not be more impressed with our list management over the last 5-6 years

And it continues to be excellent - all seven players are terrific signings.

The seven are: Chandler, Oskar Baker, Toby Bedford, Mitch Brown, Majak Daw, Deakyn Smith and Daniel Turner.

Arguably, if our injuries are not too bad, only Chandler, Bedford are serious chance at regular senior selection. But all are solid citizens and contribute to the one club mentality.

Note: i reckon turner might be a smokey for senior section. Seems a natural footballer, has good hands and i could see him slot into the back half as KPD. Declease is not in that seven , but i think he also could be an outside of chance of cracking senior selection

DD36. Who’s unsigned now? Hore? Declase??

And Hibberd. Though media reports suggest he's about to sign a new deal.

Excaltly my thoughts. Culture call

Surprised Lockhart wasn't kept on, if we're missing anything it's an accountable small defender.

Good news though

I'm surprised supporters are still writing players off as "wasted list spots" instead of backing the club to know what they're doing.  How many times were ANB, JJ, Petty and several others that now have premiership medallions around their necks written off as not up to AFL standard?  Some people are slow learners.

Ok so it was driving me mad so I did some work. As it stands we have:

Main list 34 players:

May, Salem, Harmes, Petracca, Jackson, Viney, Lever, Spargo, Brayshaw, Gawn, Bedford, Oliver, Hibberd, Langdon, Laurie, Bowey, Melksham, Rosman, Tomlinson, Jordan, Rivers, TMcDonald, Weideman, Hunt, Neale-Bullen, Fritsch, Sparrow, Baker, Petty, Pickett, Chandler, JSmith, BBrown, Dunstan

35 = Hore???

Rookie A:

Daw, DSmith, MBrown, Turner

5= Declase??

The main list can be up to 36-38 depending on whether you take 4-6 category A rookies.

So we have between 2-4 main list spots to fill and 0-2 category A rookie spots to fill, we can then take an additional 2 category B rookies regardless to take the list to 44.

We have to take at least pick 17 + upgrading JJ and Chandler.

If we keep Hore we will take pick 17 and can either draft two more to our main list or a combination of one rookie and one main list.

If we keep Hore and Declase as a rookie we will take pick 17 and can draft one more main list or take one more rookie A.

If we delist both Hore and Declase we can draft pick 17 + 3 more players either 3 main list or 1 main list 2 rookies A or 2 main list one rookie A.

I need a lie down…

So in all of this where does this leave the likes of Taj Woewodin and Andy Moniz-Wakefield for a spot on our list?

If we delist one of Hore or Declase we can take pick 17, Taj and Andy and keep one of Hore or Declase as it stands.

Or delist both Hore and Declase and take 17, Taj, Andy and one more player if that eventuates.

I thought Lockhart was mighty stiff. Was best 22 until the [censored] incident in the pre-season against the doggies. I guess with Bowey going past him and Hunt ahead of him all year that’s why he had to go? Is there any chance we use our one free rookie spot to re-rookie Jay?
Baker was ordinary against North in his one AFL game this year, but I’ll back our development crew in, he’s behind a few blokes but if he becomes a quality winger it’s still one of the very few areas we’re a bit shallow.

I agree re: Lockhart. Have we heard anything about his desire to play elsewhere? He had some talent, so not sure if his condition, lack of VFL exposure or desire is at the heart of this call.

can we also move Hore onto rookie list ? i think we did this with Nietschke in late 2020.

You would have thought that if Hore and Declase were to be offered contracts they would have been announced along with the others today.

I found the club's announcement a bit vague so have taken the Chandler re-signing as an A Rookie for one year, not as an upgrade to the senior list.  What did I miss?  Is there another report somewhere?

Last year the rules were a bit different.  This year Hore would need to go into the NAB Draft first and if not drafted he can be rookied.

This the feeling I got as well.

Thanks Premiers. Tis hard enough to keep up with the on field rules let alone the off field ones.

He's signed on for 2 years and has already done 3 years on the rookie list. Even with the new rules, he can only do a maximum of 4 on the Rookie list. So I've taken the news as a n upgrade onto the senior list.

Agree, rookie deals are for 1 year, and the maximum length of time is usually 3 years on the rookie list but is now one extra year due to Covid impacts. Only senior listed players can be given multiple year deals in my understanding.

I didn't see the 2 years in the announcement.  Did I misread?

Agreed under the new rules he can do a 4th year on the rookie list.

For the 'Contracts' thread I usually wait until there is something 'official' so for now I'll stick with Chandler as a Rookie in that thread.

Unless I have miscalculated, we have 2 picks atm, with Hore and Declase unsigned, meaning maybe 2 more spots if they are not kept.

I think we are waiting to see if Melk gets a gig somewhere else.

If we are using 17 this year and hopeful of getting Mac after 20, Woey Junior and Moniz-Wakefield, we will need 4 spots.

Herald Sun link here had him down for 2 years.

The relevant line.

"Chandler is set to re-sign with Melbourne for the next two years."

Thank you.  Are we sure they had it right?

The club was specific on:  "Baker and Bedford have been retained on the senior list, while Brown, Daw, Smith and Turner will remain on the rookie list for 2022"  but was moot on Chandler so for now I'll leave him as a Rookie.

On my next Contract thread update I'll note the uncertainty on Chandler's status.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
