All hail this gun recruitment team. Have nailed so many list decisions since 2013. Such sustained excellence is so, so rare. They deserve all the plaudits that come their way, for footy list purists it is as close to perfection as you’ll find (if Weid makes it, it will be perfection!).

Has anyone got any data (or the time to create a list) on whom we drafted in the first two rounds from 2010-2015 and then 2016-2020?

I just wanted to look at the ol nature vs nuture (drafting vs development) debate.

footywire is yr friend for this sort of thing...

https://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/td-melbourne-demons

2010-15:

  • pick 12 2010 - lucas cook
  • pick 33 2010 - jeremy howe
  • pick 36 2011 - rory taggert
  • pick 2 2012 - jesse hogan (priority)
  • pick 4 2012 - jimmy toumpas
  • pick 26 2012 - jack viney (father/son)
  • pick 9 2013 - christian salem
  • pick 2 2014 - christian petracca
  • pick 3 2014 - angus brayshaw
  • pick 40 2014 - alex neal-bullen
  • pick 42 2014 - billy stretch
  • pick 4 2015 - clayton oliver
  • pick 9 2015 - sam weideman

so six premiership players from 13 selected in that time period, one other still on our list, and two others elsewhere

2016-2020:

  • no 1st or 2nd round 2016
  • pick 29 2017 - charlie spargo
  • pick 31 2017 - bayley fritsh
  • pick 37 2017 - harrison petty
  • pick 27 2018 - tom sparrow
  • pick 33 2018 - james jordon
  • pick 3 2019 - luke jackson
  • pick 12 2019 - kysaiah pickett
  • pick 32 2019 - trent rivers
  • pick 21 2020 - jake bowey
  • pick 22 2020 - bailey laurie

so nine premiership players from 10 selected (!), all still on our list

i think the more pertinent thing to look at is when jason taylor joined - in 2013

in that time he's made 18 first or second round selections, all bar one remain on our list, and 14 are premiership players

I really appreciate the time and effort there. Thank you.

That is actually quite astounding 14 out of the 18 are premiership players.

ok here's another one.

Can anyone be bothered digging up stats on say over the last decade - what % of premiership winning teams each year are made up of (sorry for international jargon)  - home grown talent vs imports?

I think even Champion Data would struggle to do that.

2014 - Hawthorn 7 ((Lake, Gibson, Gunston, Hale, Burgoyne, Spangher, Mc Evoy)

2015 -  Hawthorn 7 ((Frawley, Lake Gibson, Gunston, Hale, Burgoyne , Mc Evoy)

2016 - Bulldogs  3( Biggs, Boyd, Hamling)

2017 - Richmond  5 (Prestia, Houli, Nankervis, Grigg, Caddy)

Interesting when you compare that with Carlton's recycled player count for next year of players projected to be best 22:

Cerra, Saad, Williams, Newman, Hewett, Jones, Setterfield, Newnes, Fogarty

A total of 9

I thought Jim Stynes and Sean Wight were imports.

Loved them both.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the scorching morning heat to bring you the following observations of Wednesday's preseason training session from Gosch's Paddock. HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
