Over the years, and particularly before the VFL turned national, there was always a close connection between Melbourne and the Norwood Redlegs in the SANFL. They have similar colours and historically, the clubs played many practice and exhibition matches against each other going back to the 19th century and more recently, in the early 1970s. The Demons recruited Tassie Medalist Graham Molloy from Norwood in 1970 as a potential Barassi replacement but injuries prevented him from showing his best in a 76 game career with the Demons.

The ABC used to televise the SANFL grand finals and for success starved Melbourne fans, we used to get a kick out of supporting the Redlegs to premiership victory. Their team is playing North Adelaide in the SANFL this afternoon and I wish them success and hope they also come out in their numbers in red and blue to support our boys tonight.

One of the reasons I'm a Dees fan today, they came out in force to support the grand old flag in its time time of need.

You could see it meant alot to the team by the look in there eyes looking around smiling and taking it all in.

Coaches and staff eg. Gary Pert, Goody, Chocco, Richo, Yze, Stafford, Burgess appreciated the support we had in the stands at Adelaide Oval i truely believe( won't happen obviously) we should play our Prelim in Adelaide.

The support we have and connections feels like a 2nd home for the club.

There’s a SANFL double header tomorrow afternoon at Adelaide Oval. Norwood have a tough job taking on the Eagles in the 3.45pm game.

No doubt Demon fans in Adelaide will be there to reciprocate the support given by Redlegs fans when we took on the Lions.

It’s a little more complex in Perth where the Perth Demons wear red and black. They didn’t make the WAFL finals. However, the West Perth Falcons are in the finals and their colours are red and blue. They’re playing Swan Districts tomorrow afternoon.

It’s great to see lots of red and blue support in both SA and WA!

Well the Redlegs lost a tight game by 7 points. Scores were level at half time. The Eagles led by a goal at 3/4 time and that was the margin halfway through the last. Norwood scored two points  but the Eagles finished off the low scoring affair with three behinds. That leaves the Redlegs playing in the First Semi Final against South Adelaide.

Another Redlegs, Bracknell won the NTFA Grand Final yesterday, beating South Launceston. First flag in a long time.

The red & blue were running rampant at the end stages of 2018, only for it to all fall apart. The MFC were unceremoniously bundled out in the prelims, with both Norwood and West Perth going down in their respective grand finals. (I also maybe recall another red & blue north-eastern seaboard team in the mix?). As it stands, all three are still alive this year, but with quite mixed hopes.

Not sure but it might be streamed but try the Ch. 7. I think you can get things like that on one of their online channels connected to SA.

I noticed even the US Open tennis ladies champion wore Demon gear.

It's catching on!

Such a glorious outfit.

Sadly, the Norwood Redlegs dropped out of the SANFL premiership race yesterday, losing the First Semi Final to South Adelaide.

In the WAFL the red and blue (but not Demons) West Perth play in their final this afternoon.

I came across this footage of Norwood’s 1975 grand final victory over Glenelg. Ross Dillon wearing #24 kicks the goal to put the Redlegs in front late in the game.

I was there, unfortunately. I think it was the first GF at Football Park. Back in those days, for reasons that escape me, the wind often used to howl down the ground. I can't bring myself to watch it all again, it was bad enough at the time, but as I recall, Fred Phillis, who was the best full forward of that era, couldn't buy a goal. Although he regularly kicked 100 or more over multiple seasons.

Norwood stormed home with the last three goals including one to Matthew Panos at the 26 minute mark of the final quarter to win the SANFL Grand Final by a point.

An absolute cracker of a game high intensity, courage and skill in wet conditions sure did enjoy my Red and Blue Sunday 🏆🏆

Maybe I didn't make it as clear as I might have. He displayed the same degree of usefulness at both clubs, ie. not much. I have no idea why we recruited him in the first place. Maybe it was because of what he might have become, because it certainly wasn't on the basis of what he'd already done, and I say that as a Glenelg supporter. He was certainly a fairly big boy, but size isn't an important factor unless you can use it.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
