There are two things that I’d like to say about that comment.

The use of ‘Political Correctness’ is one of the biggest misnomers in public discourse today, and has been bastardized from what it started off as.

Initially, it was a means to make language more inclusive, and to take the implicit bias out of certain terms. For example, ‘chairman’ became ‘chairperson’ and ‘air stewardess’ became ‘flight attendant’. Fairly banal stuff really.

It has been unfortunately conflated with what now passes as ‘progressive’ politics, which in turn has been conflated with any type of attempts to achieve equity, inclusivity or fairness. Previously, these attempts were made by both sides of politics, based on a mutually held acknowledgment of what our shared challenges were. The only difference was that both sides differed on how we solved said challenges.

Alas, for some, the issue is no longer the approach taken, but whether the problem as it is described is as stated. Or if it is as described, whether it really is that big a problem. Or, if one is particularly despicable, it’s secretly approving of the injustice, but engaging in sophistry and obfuscation to make reality unrecognizable. 

In short: pure gaslighting. Something that has been making regular appearances in these threads. I’m reading it here as we speak.

Secondly, politics touches our lives regardless of whether we like it or not. As it has been said elsewhere, the ‘personal is political’ because our immediate environment is partially determined by the political zeitgeist we live in. Partisanship (one party/ideology competing to beat the other) is another matter, but the idea that a society can be completely detached from the political context (the emergence of issues/obstacles/challenges and discussion as to how to handle/discuss them) it exists in is rocky at best.

The better question to be asked is if so called PC politics (as described earlier) shouldn’t exist in sports period, shouldn’t establishment politics either?

I wholeheartedly support the ANZAC day matches as I understand troops get sent where their governments send them, and that one can firmly disapprove of a mission but not the person dispatched. However, I wonder how the ‘keep PC politics out of sport’ crowd would react should someone assert that ANZAC Day football is a celebration of colonialism, militarism, xenophobia and jingoism, and these values are partisan, right wing and unacceptable in a multicultural and tolerant society? I am merely playing devil’s advocate here, but judging what happened to Yassmin Abdel-Magied, I’m guessing their reaction would not be so restrained. 

To me, those who make the call to ‘keep PC out of sports’ are happy if values are expressed through sports, so long as it’s their own values.

P.S. That said, there were probably a few other reasons the reactionary media complex and their assorted troglodytes and acolytes went after Yassmin with as much venom as they did. We all know those reasons. Bear that in mind in regards to the treatment Kozzie got on SNS.

I understand your desire to enjoy the game in the vacuum of your moral sanctity. However, seeing you feel the need to attempt to trump a perfectly reasonable discussion on how best the show support for one of our own players with illiberal ideology, I’d like to take the opportunity to call out your cynical use of the term political correctness as a fig-leaf of naked prejudice and a smoke screen for regressivism.
To demonise the term, is not a passive cry for freedom of speech or political thought, but a means of suppression for those who care to think outside their own bubble and more specifically those who face discrimination on a consistent basis.

You can have your view but don't misrepresent what I say. You sound like the MIss Universe pageant where they all wish for world peace.

Great sentiment but real life is tougher than that.  I happen to think resilience is also a big part of this. Its not going away sadly.

We have to teach him to deal with this as well as do everything we can to call it out.

Life has a lot of hurdles and much if it isn't pretty.

So yeah you can sing Kumbayah too. It's horrible that he has to deal with it but I think our support is helping to teach him resilience as well.

The 2020 one would barely impact the aesthetic at all, and can make a permanent statement. Designed by Nev. Add new boys as they come. Someone should email the club. Or 2019. We've definitely won the indigenous guernsey premiership.
