was reading about a salary dump trade GC/North were looking at which would be roughly be as follows;

North Melbourne acquire Daniel Macpherson (paying majority of the wage) and Pick 19

Gold Coast Get either late 3rd of 4th round.

Would the AFL approve this trade?

Yeah that pick 19 is the one I heard GC need to get rid of. They're that tight that they're struggling with fitting in too many higher draft pick wages. Mind boggling.

I assume GC have cap issues as a result of paying overs to retain their players

Past time to draw a line through the GC experiment. A cap crunch might be the trigger for the AFL to see sense. Either move to Tassy or wind them up

Gold Coast's other problem is their list size.  I think they had 51 for this season, as a result of concessions the AFL gave them in 2019-20.  That has to be reduced like all clubs, I think, to 36 plus rookies.

So they have accumulated a heap of players they now cannot keep or pay for.  Their salary cap problems are tied in with the number of players they have to pay, not the quality of players.

And like a lot of clubs this year, to meet reduced COVID salary caps, they backloaded contracts.  The backloading starts happening this year, so we will see a lot of delisting just to keep under the cap.  Other clubs just did an across the board reduction in salaries for 2021, and will avoid the problem.

Hello Guys.  I can tell you that the Dees are talking to Luke Dunstan.  Don't be surprised if this happens.

Essendon are making a huge play for the Gold Coast's King.  If not this year, they are doing incredible groundwork for the future.

Several Clubs enquired about AVB with Essendon being the most interested.

Cheers,

Wow. To be honest I actually don't mind the Dunstan talk. He polled 11 brownlow votes this year and I think with the year we had with limited injuries he certainly would be a handy inclusion for a Viney or Oliver if they went down.

I'm guessing this is the Alan Richardson connection?

I'd be very happy to add Dunstan to our midfield mix. Important we have sufficient depth through there in case of injury.

No world beater, but would be free and doubt he would cost much salary wise.

Don't know if already mentioned, but Gold Coast are in a world of hurt. Rumour is they have severe salary cap issues, despite their poor list. Look for them to potentially trade out some of this year's picks. Not sure if we can get in on the action, but will be something to keep an eye on.

I thought they were trading picks out due to issues with the list size. How would trading picks help their salary cap?

Possibly due to the difference in salaries between first round picks and later picks/rookies I guess?

It will be interesting to see what clubs strategies are in tis years trade and Draft period.  You are taking the punt on a lot of young players that haven't played a lot for 2 years, not only the lack of games but also the training.  Appreciate most will be doing programs but the lack of games and team training will really hinder their development.  You are basically picking up kids on their U16 form and limited games this year

I think Dunstan would be a good pick up. I was amazed the Saints would just let him walk.

I also hope we retain AVB if no other club takes him.

Dunstan would be solid insurance for a Club in a REAL Window for a few years and with a Player like Viney who will probably need to have weeks off during the season and the last thing we need is to keep playing Oliver every week in the guts and have him  banged up by 27 like Cripps.

The Club must start managing Viney & Oliver & Pettracca in particular so they can go the full journey to 32/33.

Also, I suspect the Club will back Choco in to improve his disposal

Has the club already met with him mate? Just worry that Dunstan may think he won't get the midfield minutes compared to say Gold Coast for instance where he'd be their starting on baller.

I am not sure there is much difference between the salaries of the rounds. I think it is more due to reducing the list size and overpaying existing players.

The top 20 picks will receive $90,000 base without the games-played incentive, picks 21-40 a base of $82,500 (down $7500), and $80,000 (down $5000) for those selected after 40 creating further room for clubs grappling with the drop in total player payments.

But all players drafted will continue to receive match payments of $4000 per match for each senior game they play in 2021.

We are now a true destination club.

Sure Dunstan would get more minutes at the Suns, and probably more coin, but he is zero chance of playing in flag there.

Staying in Victoria AND having a chance of playing in premiership team would be a very attractive combination to many players i suspect.  No doubt a factor in Weed signing on again.

I would have thought Sparrow/Jordan would be in line for more onball time before we needed a player like Dunstan

They're talking with him & his Manager and there will be games there for him based on what I said above and inevitable injuries.  It just depends on what path he wants to take.  Don't forget with Jones & AVB out, there is no other inside mid depth.

Both are a couple of seasons away from being able to cope as full time inside mids, particularly Jordon who needs to build his strength a fair bit.

Yep, it's probably a more big picture thing, but from what I've heard that pick 19 is the real sticking point for them.

I wondered whether we might sniff around there. Despite our elite midfield talent, we need more midfield depth.

Fair enough, I guess we do need extra cover in the event Oliver/Petracca/Viney get injured - I'm just wary as to why St Kilda would throw him out the door for nothing I always get alarm bells when a player is discarded like that...

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
