Jackson, Kosi, Rivers, Langdon, Tomlinson. In 2020

can anyone recall a better recruitment in one year ?

Appears at this early stage to be a good year. Still some water to go under the bridge before making that call.

99 was good- Bruce, Green, Wheatley and Whelan. Maybe even Simmons.

Revisit in 5 years time. I've been burned too many times by promising youth. Tomlinson and Langdon are already good players, but Jackson, Kosi and Rivers have shown just as much as Trengove, Grimes and Jurrah had at the same stage.

Yes, SPC... that was a very good year.

In 1986 we drafted Steven Febey, Matthew Febey, Andy Lovell & Darren Jarman!!!

Then added Andrew Obst, Steven Tingay and Jay Viney in 1987

Another fair year was 1997 with Travis Johnston, Nathan Brown and Guy Rigoni

Should we even mention 2009 with Scully Trengove & Max Gawn?

Too early to tell etc etc but it is looking amazing.  Of course you have to consider it in terms of the price paid, so;

Tomlinson:  Free agent.

Langdon: Um, this is complicated.  "Ed Langdon is officially a Demon. Fremantle sent Langdon, Pick 26 and a future fourth-round pick to Melbourne in exchange for Pick 22, Pick 79 and a future second-round selection."  So that seems to add up to Freo gaining a small upgrade in 2019 (26 to 22), a late pick moved from 2020 to 2019 (future fourth for pick 79) and a future second rounder.

Jackson: Pick 3, no shenanigans here except Gold Coast getting a freebie from AFL HQ ?

Pickett:  Pick 12, with shenanigans. I'm already tired from trying to describe the Langon trade, so let's just say it was pick 12.

Rivers: Pick 32, which, just for lols, is the pick we got back from Freo in the Langdon trade.

So, you could realistically say the price was picks 3, 12, 22, 32 and a free agent.

When you consider the needs of our club, I'm not sure any club has had a more effective draft and trade period since the Geelong double-miracle of 1999 and 2001.

I think you may  have overlooked Earl Spaulding and Warren Dean in 1986 ( first played in 87)

 

Well to contradict myself,  in 1953 I believe we recruited Ken Melville ,Laurie Mithen , Bob and Trevor Johnson , Don Williams and perhaps Ian Ridley and Bluey Adams.

but in those days the club offered recruits immediate entry into MCC membership and that was enough for many !  With the complexities of the draft I can’t believe how well we did in 2020, or, strictly, 2019

The 1999 quartette played 763 games between them... going to be very difficult to surpass!

The 1986 trio played 522

I reckon 1999 beats it comfortably.

We recruited Brad Green, Paul Wheatley,  Mathew Whelan, Cameron Bruce,  Stephen Powell

Perhaps the question is @Farmer, have you ever being frothing so much about the future talent that we potentially have?

As spectacular as Kossi is - Rivers will be a mothertrucking rock back there for the next decade.

IIRC Farmer and Yze debuted on the same day round 1 1995. Not sure who else that year but had some great days at the G in those days

Correction - In 1986 as well as the Febeys and Lovell we also acquired Earl Spalding, Warren Dean & Todd Viney - none of these were in the draft but first played in 1987 so that was a cracker year.

Obst was drafted in 1987 but came to Melbourne in 1990.

Tingay was drafted in the 1987 draft but first played in 1989.

Farmer yes.

Yze debuted in round 13 1995 in an 11 point win over Richmond.

Um, you might want to add another 374 games to the 1986 tally:
Todd Viney - 233
Earl Spalding - 109
Warren Dean - 32

Theres a bunch of others to add in around that 1986/87. For instance Sean Wight, Jimmy Stynes. Also traded in Doug Koop, Dean Chiron  '87. Garry Lyon, Ricky Jackson, Steven Stretch & Brett Lovett, Simon Eishold ( I know I know) debuted in 1986. Plus  junior players that came up from our U19's to our Reserves to our 1sts care of RDB and Slug Jordan. They all debuted around 1986/7. Tony Campbell,  , Stawbs O'Dwyer,  Glenn Lovett, Rod Grinter (Honourable mention year b4 1985)

Yes all those and then thinking about the recent Rod Owen story, we recruited him in 1991 but shopped him off to the Bears in 92. Why did we do that, oh yeah think 1991 and we discovered Jakovitch with 70 plus goals in 12 games, we already had Bennett and Lyon and then a young Schwartz appeared on the scene. Talk about forward talent.  

This is peak happy Demonland.
