6.  Stonewall May - the General does it again with 8 intercept marks, 8 Rebounds, 19 effective disposals and the most meters gained with 578.  Was on record pace with 500 to half time!

5.  Clarry - A quiet start for his standards for his 100th but redeemed after the 1st

4.  Lever - growing in confidence and touch wood the match fitness / strength appears to be nearing his best pre injury

3.  Charlie Spargooo - Was that his best match for the club in terms of involvements and consistency across four quarters i wonder?  I've had nagging doubts he would make it and the lack of penetration on his kicking is still a worry.  However, his poise, decision making, finish and attack at the ball went to another level yesterday.  Let's hope this wasn't "Good Charlie" and he goes off the boil next week.  One swallow does not a summer make

2.  Mr Ed - what can you say.  Certainly no nag!  The banana was absurd but also shows the players appear to have been given a free reign to take the game on and play with instinct, flare and freedom when the opportunity arises once ball is in hand...amen to that!

1.  Tracc - Looked like a BOG looming in the 1st.  Might have copped a heavy tag afterwards, a change of player or a slight corky / niggle?  Hopefully he trims a few kilos off through the legs over the next few weeks and finds a bit more zip.  Should be fine but looks a tad "gym" heavy below the hips.  No doubt Burgess/Tracc are all over any such issue if there is one in terms of the "power vs leg speed" balance

80% disposal efficiency (28 effective disposals). I reckon that’s pretty good for a round 1 effort.

I swear people rate Oliver on his past not what he actually did on the day. They pushed us inside as Fyffe said so he needEd to handball a lot. But he executed very well releasing players. His kicking was also quite good with some great passes. He hit targets all day. Still people will see a mistake or two and say there you go like always !!

I swear when looking at others votes that some have watched a different game to me. Either that or they give bias or sympathy votes.

The Age has Oliver 8, Andrew Brayshaw 8, Trac 7, TMac 7 Fyfe 7.

do they just look at the stats or something?
not one vote for May or Lever?

Just no. Had a shocker.

Just no. Didn't have a shocker.

Gawn came up against a junior Sandi in Meek who outjumped him early, but Gawn altered his style and took control of the hitouts.

He still marked the ball well on a few occasions in defence, but was unable to get near it up forward partly because he rested up there more into the wind (Ponsford Stand end) and his suppliers couldn't get enough purchase or height on the footy to play to his advantage. So it was a pretty ineffectual game from our big fella and aside from GWS ruckman, most rucks had less influence because there was less ball-ups. Gawny was way better than Meek, although I'm sure Longmuir would have been pleased with his man for stopping Gawny dominating. But why even use the term 'shocker'.

Must do.

Consensus here has May and Lever as top dogs. Olver was good with a number of possies and although a little wasteful should still be given votes but below our 2 key defenders for sure.

Roy Ward usually does the basketball, so you can imagine why he just looked at stats and names and went with those.

Unfortunately the papers are doing it on the cheap these days. The Herald Sun is actually using a former Age writer Ronny Lerner as a freelancer via there newswire service - they no longer use AAP. Ronny is one of the better ones.

But the papers now use their handful of regulars to either write colour or do detailed preview features and relying on inexperienced cheaper staff to do games - hence why the votes will be way off open occasions.

The Herald Sun's James Mottershead gave Steven May the three and at least had Andrew Brayshaw, who was everywhere, in the votes, but somehow he ignored all of Trac's early errors and gave him two votes.

very rusty. Couple of handballs needed to click and we would have bolted away.  But we have no killer instinct.   Hope that’s all spelt proper. Like my English.

Loved seeing Lever and May play cracking games, but I will say this; it was not again quality opposition. Let’s see them back it up next week. Clarry was our only clear midfield winner, I think this year he’ll explode.
I really liked Spargo’s game, he is a rare beast at the club that actually lowers the eyes. I think he’s going to have some people on here eat their words.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
