Great clearance by Oliver, but the real hero in this passage is Harmes.
Starts the clip with a block on Cotchin, then blocks the tagger pursuing on Oliver.
2 blocks in 4 seconds - clearance, goal.

May be maturity and selflessness, may be the the influence of Yze as midfield coach, but this is the type of teamwork we need to see more of.

great post. Harmes was bagged but had by far the greatest challenge on the ground, often under extreme pressure. he did cough it up early but teammates weren't in the right position for him. He is an ace in the sleeve for Goodwin and if he doesn't play him as a run with tagger we will be worse off for it.

A lot of this is way off.

But the easy ones.

Scott Thompson spent at least a whole year in the reserves.

Frawley took a few years to become consistent and was a whipping boy regularly getting smashed in one on ones and turning over the footy.

Bate showed a fair bit early and looked like he would kick on.  I liked him very much from the start.

Pickett has some pretty clear and rare senior AFL attributes that we haven't had in a small forward for decades.  That isn't enough on its own to see him make it but it's a start.

I am sick to death of seeing other clubs blokes like Betts, Walters, Cameron, the Riolis and Ryan et al.  When on these players have a blend of skill speed and agility that makes them impossible to match up on.  They cause havoc for defences.  They are the type of players that regular feature in finals and premierships.  Pickett has these attributes along with a healthy streak of aggression.

You are very wrong on your assessment of Pickett. One wonders why you would attempt rewrite history to manufacture an argument against a second year player who has already played senior footy and performed well?

We have plenty on the list that have been there for longer and showed far less.

wait, already performed well? he's kicked 7 goals in 14 games. At this stage, he is unproven. Until he kicks at least a goal a game then I will start paying attention.

I'm with you kev. He's got something i reckon. Personally i'd play him as a forward.

I'd use J. Smith on and off the bench, mainly forward as an impact player who givies others a rest.

There's an admission.

Pickett has the same goal average as the Wiz in his first season.

Wrong DD give Kossie  a fair go He is a kid since when do you expect exact performances from Ist Rounders that always match their draft no?

Some are slower than others mids are quick to perform KP players slower ( SamW)  rucks even slower ( Gawny) and a comparison with many other small forwards is relevant.

if you want to be fairer  you could be super critical  on the same Scale with ANB or Hunty.!!!

Kossie is only 19 and has elite talent and once he gets back into the swing will gain confidence with our Coaches assisting all along the way. He has a great base to build from and will pay us off many times over as Stretch says.

Your one goal a game is not a given but as long as he plays his role and creates pressure and chaos with the defenders we will prosper. A goal a game will be achieved and more if there is no pressure on him playing his role in due course.

I think Joel Smith has an upside.

He can do the spectacular and should be played forward as an impact player.

He can get a bit lost out there.

As he matures then put more responsibility/expectations on him.

he's 25 and been on a list for what 4/5 years now? doesn't get more mature than that, i think it's time we move on

Not his best position but i would like to see him run through the 300 banner, after that if Bakers banging down the door its game on.

i agree re jones but i'm having a harder and harder time believing any baker hype, last year i was keen to see him in sooner as we seemed to have too many undroppables and similar types each week (mostly melksham and vanders) but i don't think his disposal is afl standard and he doesn't accumulate enough of the footy or use his speed to its full potential, maybe he's more suited to HF where he seems to be able to find the goals but i don't think he's the long term or short term solution for that matter

21 hours ago, Dr.D said:

We traded a first round pick to get him so I think expectations are justified. I've seen more from Bowey and Laurie in a afl reserves pricey match.

we're gonna trade our future pick every year for ever and ever, the draft has as it seems an infinite life time so every season you can bring a future pick forward so we did the right thing using two first rounders on jacko and kozzy when we did

He has missed lots of football.

The maturity I mean, is gained from the experience on the field at an elite level.

While he remains on our list and will get games this year (more than likely), I will discuss him.

You can move on or do you mean the club should delist.

If not successful this season they may delist him.

Is it just me or is there a serious lack of post match coverage and reports following the game on the official MFC website?

No official match review, stats, interview from players, coaches review etc....

Saw a post  game interview with Chandler on Youtube....it is strange that this type stuff would not be up on MFC to get memberships before season starts.  They should be doing everything they can to promote the club.  Not going to get 50K members by hoping lol.

It was a scratch match, to which they organised a live stream. In years gone past you'd hear only the odd whisper about the game in the press or on here! Very few clubs had any sort of report, the majority had either highlights or just repeated the AFL website summary. I'd expect more from this weeks 'official' pre-season hit out, but surely between the AFL, SEN, HS, The Age etc. all covering the game this is enough?

I just took a call from T-Mac and asked him about the blood clot rumour. He said Oscar even rang him to ask if he was okay.

Apparently there was a young Casey fella in the B game that looked a bit like him who got taken to hospital with a blood clot after the game. Someone saw him at the hospital and confused him for T-Mac.

Thanks.   When there is a rumour which turns out to be wrong it is good to know how it came about and to know it wasn't someone just stirring or being  malicious.

Dunno exactly when i watched it, i think it was day after,,,,,The replays quarter by quarter were definitely up on youtube as soon as games had finished and at that stage were not on MFC website until later that evening.  I find that the information we get from this site is much more informative than MFC site regardless!

Yeah I hear what you're saying. I just feel that just because a player is quick it doesn't mean he applies forward pressure. I don't remember too many times where Pickett caused direct turnovers by his forward pressure. maybe 1 play.  And he is only as quick as he is when he is standing. When he goes to ground, which is far too often, he may as well as be mark Jamar because he offers no speed when going to ground. That's my main criticism. Also, I think his kicking needs improving. He drops the ball from inside to out far too extremely. He also kicks the belly of the ball too much when snapping for goal. This probably explains his awful goal to behind ratio.

ANB is being played out of position so I'm not that critical. He is a midfielder, not a half forward. When played in the midfield he has a lot of upside. Hunt also has never been a forward. Sure he's had the odd good game there but his best season has been as a defender and he really needed to stay there.

Yes Kossie needs a finishing course and that's Choco's job.
Don't really see ANB as a mid he has ordinary skills hand and foot is not super strong and finishes his goal snap shots poorer Than all of our players.

Hunt I jus think is  jack of all trades and master of none so we keep him for depth and may be run off the backline today but goal sneaking at HF tomorrow !!

if ANB was a midfielder he would have been off an afl list before we'd even heard his name. the club acknowledged that tried to adapt him to another role, now we have more exciting options there and he is back in the wilderness. hunt similarly, club recognised his disposal wasnt good enough off HB at a time where we struggled to go i50 effectively and trialled him forward where he had some ok performances but was largely a passenger but new rules and stronger options forward of centre have reverted him back to HB and imo he was lucky it was a two year extension and not only 1

I disagree. I've never understood the criticism of ANB. he is hard, moves well, decent enough disposals and his decision making is ok. he also hits the scoreboard. There's a lot of players I criticise but ANB has never been one of them. His form in 2017 showed me that he has already succeeded as an afl mid. He basically got moved out on to a flank since then.

Hunt got a 2 year extension because we were the slowest team in the comp. Not that hard to figure out really.

When did ANB ever play in the midfield? I can’t remember him ever getting extended minutes apart from at Casey where he was a dominant accumulator but ok ball user.

He isn’t hard. He doesn’t bodyline the ball, it’s mostly at arms length.

He has good athleticism but isn’t a natural mover through traffic. He has no left side and too often tries to kick out of traffic. His first kick on the weekend tried to go through 6 legs.

He probably should get some more midfield rotation time but he has to earn it by showing he’s stronger over the ball and better with it. Plus we’re stacked with mids.

He showed some improvement last year. Clearly the scratch matches helped him find a stack of the ball and get better with using it.

There were some positives on the weekend with a few clever underground handballs. That’s a rare sign of him adding a skill rather than stepping to his right foot and hoping it works out. Ideally he’d add a left hand and a left foot but if it’s the underground handball then that works for me.

Overall though he is what he is - a tireless worker plying the hardest spot on the ground. High half forward is mostly a midfield position. The bulk of his time and possessions will come between the arcs. But he has to win and use the ball better under pressure otherwise he goes from a useful role player to sub par.

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

A few years ago, the Melbourne Football Club produced a documentary about the decade in which it rose from its dystopic purgatory of regular thrashings to the euphoria of a premiership victory. That entire period could have been compressed in a fast motion version of the 2025 season to date as the Demons went from embarrassing basket case to glorious winner in an unexpected victory over the Dockers last Saturday. They transformed in a single week from a team that put in a pedestrian effort of predictably kicking the ball long down the line into attack that made a very ordinary Bombers outfit look like worldbeaters into a slick, fast moving side with urgency and a willingness to handball and create play with shorter kicks and by changing angles to generate an element of chaos that yielded six goals in each of the opening quarters against Freo.

  • NON-MFC: Round 07

Round 7 gets underway in iconic fashion with the traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster. The high-flying Magpies will be looking to solidify their spot atop the ladder, while the Bombers are desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top eight. Later that evening, Fremantle will be out to redeem themselves after a disappointing loss to the Demons, facing a hungry Adelaide side with eyes firmly set on breaking into the top four. Saturday serves up a triple-header of footy action. The Lions will be looking to consolidate their Top 2 spot as they head to Marvel Stadium to clash with the Saints. Over in Adelaide, Port Adelaide will be strong favourites at home against a struggling North Melbourne. The day wraps up with a fiery encounter in Canberra, where the Giants and Bulldogs renew their bitter rivalry. Sunday’s schedule kicks off with the Suns aiming to bounce back from their shock defeat to Richmond, taking on the out of form Swans. Then the Blues will be out to claim a major scalp when they battle the Cats at the MCG. The round finishes with a less-than-thrilling affair between Hawthorn and West Coast at Marvel. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
