First off Hawks vs Doggies.  ‘rebuild’ versus ‘contenders’ (apparently, according to AFL.com.au report).  Hawks win in a last quarter comeback.  Hartigan and Phillips as imports to Hawks said to go OK, and Stef Martin did OK teaming with Johnnie English.  One 50m for manning the mark infringement (Bont).

Where are we marching to?

Had a peek at the HFC bigfooty forum and they're all celebrating their last quarter heroics and thinking it could be a much better year than people think. Doggies supporters meanwhile are saying "it's only pre season, we weren't even trying, Bevo was experimenting in the last qtr"

On topic of no fans, why is this? They're letting people go to the AFLW and the AAMI series, but not this weekend's games? I was under the impression this week's games were for the purpose of no interstate travelling for clubs, which is fine but why lock out the fans who are hungry for footy after being forced to watch the entire season in their lounge room.

I though we were supposed to be learning how to live in a COVID safe era and therefore a couple of thousand odd supporters can easily socially distance at Casey, Whitten Oval, Princes Park etc...Another example of fan disengagement where it doesn't have to be this way.

 

 

 

 

 

I don’t really take a lot out of the practice matches. Hawks will be bottom 4 and dogs top 8. 

I remember being stocked years ago when neeld was coaching and we beat collingwood in a practice game. That excitement was soon short lived. 

But I would still love to see essenscum get beaten.

I have money on them for the spoon. Partly I think it’s a possibility, mostly I just want it to happen!

My understanding is because it would be difficult to police numbers as it is not a ticketed event. You wouldn't be able to control how many people rocked up if it were an open session.

Valid point, and fair enough with it hard to police a non ticketed event.

So, why not then make these practice matches a ticketed event? Bring something back to the fans who have been robbed a season of footy.

It's disappointing but they've shortened the AAMI Community series to just the one week and now confirmed the interstate sides will play their neighbours to cut down on travel. 

Without the organisation of proper games, in decent time slots, with a sponsor and tv broadcasts I can see why they've called these effectively training sessions.

In hindsight I think they could've quickly organised each club to distribute even a low number like 500 tickets per club with a simple covid and security plan and had a few loyal members at the games. It could've eased the disappointment on fans who miss out on games at times this year.

I agree that it’s disappointing after a year of the pandemic there still seems to be issues with with the idea of “living with COVID” given that there are zero community transmissions in Melbourne. That said any COVID security plan would include increased staff which would mean spending more money and without anything coming back it just chews into the clubs budget.
