2020 Player Reviews: #32 Tom Sparrow

The strong bodied young midfielder progressed slowly in his second season and was showing some promise before a collarbone injury caused an early end to his season.

Date of Birth: 31 May, 2000

Height: 183cm

Weight: 82kg

Games MFC 2020: 5

Career Total: 7

Goals MFC 2020: 2

Career Total: 3

Tom Sparrow turns 21 next season had a hand full of games and  showed plenty of promise also had game time  in the midfield  and looks composed.

A good solid 2nd preseason and expect him to get more game time. IMO Tom has a good future in front of him.

I agree NSFM he did look composed and has a bit of a swagger about him, another tough pre-season and watch out for young Tom Sparrow to show his stuff...........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have high hopes for Sparrow.

Looks like being handy depth, but it is hard to see where he fits in to a full strength line up. Seems to do most things well, but I'm not sure that he has any elite attributes, which may stop him becoming a top player.

Not sure how I feel about Sparrow.

Hasn’t had a huge amount of opportunity due to his own injury issues and the general health of the list in 2020.  Coaches seem to rate him and he seems to be building up to the pace of the game at senior level.

Encouragingly, he does get to the right spots and has the ability to find and accumulate a bit of the footy.  Hasn’t had a ‘wow’ moment yet, but is still young, light and seemingly playing outside of his preferred role.

This kid has some ability but he is so far down the pecking order behind all our quality inside mids.

He was a pretty high draft pick. Hope it pays off

What, pick 27?

Yep. I would consider a second round pick to be a high pick. In fact it was our first pick in that draft. Second rounders should go on to play at least 100 games

Can play and could be a very useful player.

I notice that he gets crunched a lot. Not sure if his peripheral vision is no good or whether he is just fearless but he won't last too long unless he learns how to protect himself.

Thought he took a step forward this season in his development. Seems highly rated among the coaches/playing group and a really likable kid.

A lot of folks here saying he's unlikely to find a regular spot in the team but I wouldn't be so sure of that. Was given more opportunity this year then I thought he would and some valuable time in the middle and both HF/HB. Had he not got the injury I think there's a chance he continues to play out the season.

At 183cm and 82kg he's super solid and developed for his age. Love his attack on the ball and showed flashes some poise this season with his limited possession. I think he will put real pressure on someone like Harmes who I thought was the most disappointing this season. They both play tough contested style football, pretty much same size/weight and could both be pushing to play that HB/mid role next season. I hope and think Harmes might turn it around but I also like the pressure this kid puts on some of the seniors.

Also one of Viney, Trac, Clayton or Brayshaw were to get injured (touch wood) Sparrow is looking like someone who would step up and push to the next level as excellent depth for us.

Definitely showed enough in his game time.  Like a young Todd Viney. He has the ability at the contest and to rotate through with Trac, Viney , Oliver, Brayshaw and Harmes.

I see him starting on the bench for majority of games in 2021 but getting increased time where required.

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
