Love your work @Demonland but we had a Jones thread kicking around last week - maybe could consolidated this article into that thread to continue the debate?

FWIW, I don't think I agree with the article. I don't think Jones has shown enough this year to suggest he could be a meaningful best 22 contributor in 2021. Which is sad, as it would be a fitting reward for Jones' hard work and determination if he was able to get to 300.

Jones will be  rightly recognized as a hero/champ/great of the club.

Sadly age, injury, covid and the 15 years or so of body bashing he took on behalf of the club will deny him the 300 game milestone.

I think we should rookie him. Allow him to work with the kids in the 2s next year and he is a good insurance policy. If we can get him 7 games plugging holes next year, I’m all for it. He is definitely past his best, well past, but I wouldn’t be tossing him on the scrap heap if he isn’t ready to give it away. If Collingwood can find a rookie spot for Dunn, can’t see why we can’t do the same. This is what separates us from other clubs sometimes. I agree with the article. Don’t disrespect those that have given immense service

It is also a sneaky way to add an extra assistant coach without it being under the soft cap. I believe that’s what the hawks may be up to with Burgoyne who is playing at a similar quality to Jones this year.

We should have done the same with Vince last year. We could have used him when we were ravaged by injury!

Not sure he’s the best example for the kids to learn from

Move on.
Jones is lucky to have played as many games as he has

Not fair

He is on the positive side of the ledger of the amount of good years he's had

I, for one, hope he plays 300

Hell no.

He is done.

No room for passengers next year

It’s not a Retirement home

R Flower played 272

He’s safer on the field than a retirement home in Victoria!

Let’a agree to disagree

Flower also retired as our leading goal kicker in 1987 but he knew it was time.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
