Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Don Scott Claims Hawks Cheated Salary Cap

I think you'll find it restricted to only around 14 clubs, and maybe only 13 as Fitzroy were in a position where they could only dream of paying outside the cap.

Today's Age suggests strongly that rorting the salary cap was widespread around this time.

In other words, nothing to see here, folks. Don Scott just seems to be grandstanding for no reason.

...unlikely we would be awarded a Flag, but they could certainly lose theirs.

Spot on WWS. Don Scott is an average conveyance but that has nothing to do with it. During the time of the alleged breaches he was someone within the club who held considerable influence. Investigate. If there's nothing there, so be it. Otherwise, there's no point in having an integrity officer whatsoever.

That article is behind a paywall so i can only guess what Scott is saying, but it will be very hard to trace Brown Paper Bags.

That said, i have no doubt that Whorethorn were paying the lists of that era an incredibly huge amount of cash to keep them all together

They were just a wrecking ball in ‘88-‘89

There's always a trail SWYL. Cash consistently being put in bank accounts by players themselves etc. And you only need the one whistle blower.

And I don't get the 'everyone was doing it' bit. This was a club that won a series of Premierships with an all-star line -up. Clearly, not all clubs got the memo that you could cheat your [censored] off. And don't forget, meanwhile the VFL were giving Fitzroy the [censored] for being non- competitive.

Well, that's a relief! ......................You're kidding right?

So we get done for tanking, Carlton get done for salary cap and Hawthorn (who actually won multiple Premierships during that time) get a pass. The family club BS has always made me want to vomit by the way.

Gut feel LDcV ..  is Scott telling the truth?

I lean towards yes but what do you think? Do you believe him or more importantly,  do you want to believe him?

I'm sure it's true 'Macca' and agree that it will be closed down.

We dobbed ourselves in via Joe and paid for it, still are.

Then we got nailed on the tanking, again not the only club, paid for it and still are.

One of the big ones for me is performance enhancing drugs going back to the 80's and premierships.

There has always been a bit of a smell around those and key players are still in the game.

I guess they really were the family club. Everyone in the family got paid, wives, girlfriends.

It was all over the place back then Glory.
Records were not always kept. You cannot always trace cash.
i have no doubt many Clubs were rorting

Whorethorn and Carlscum leading the way. I used to go out to Glenferrie Oval with ABC Journo’s on Thursday nights for the weekly Sausage BBQ. The “paper bags” existed in all different ways.
i kept quiet and just observed, but i was so angry at the arrogance that just went on and on.

Payment of wives during the early 80's was not uncommon. It was done primarily for tax reasons and done under the guise of laundry and secretarial services etc. It was only the major players as the rest were paid a pittance.

There was a big ATO audit done around 1983. Unsubstantiated rumours that certain football powerbrokers threatened to close down football if the ATO didn't back off.

ATO.

you seriously think ato would get involved for a relatively small amount of unpaid tax for something 30-40 years ago

i also don't think banks are legally obliged to keep account details for that long and i seriously doubt whether those tape backups would even be readable now

Ross Oakley the former CEO of the AFL has admitted that it occurred, but said this particular breach was never brought to his attention.

The Salary Cap officer was Phil Ryan, former 12 year President of the Hawks and Oakley was a former Hawks Board member.

Phil Ryan apparently told the Hawks to stop doing it.

Joe might have got word that the AFL knew about our salary cap breaches and got in first.

I suspect one of the reasons he's saying this now is that it's so far removed from recent history the AFL would almost consider itself to be a different competition now.

Knowing that they aren't going to be any good this year maybe the AFL will strip them of premiership points for the season, they still get to snag pick #1 in the draft and thus the Hawks get to regenerate their list while claiming the victim card. Not dissimilar to Essendon who 100% should not have been eligible for the number one draft pick in 2016.

    DEPTH CHARGE by Whispering Jack

The jubilation on the coach’s face as he danced a celebratory jig by the playing bench after the final siren sounded to record his team’s four-point victory over the Demons when the teams last met, said it all.    On that rainy Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, Ken Hinkley’s young midfield secured much more than four points on offer. The victory over one of the big dogs of the competition after a succession of wins over some of its lesser lights gave his team respect and validation fo

    HIBERNATING by KC from Casey

When they locked up the rooms for summer at the end of last year’s football season, the rooms gathered cobwebs, the atmosphere became dense and the place developed a sleepy feel. They opened up the rooms to let Casey out to play on Sunday but the team was still hibernating and they missed the bulk of the opening quarter. By the time they worked out it was game on, their opponents from Box Hill had accumulated five goals and, if the game wasn’t over, it might as well have been. For a se

A FORK IN THE HAWK by George on the Outer

For too long in the past, Demon fans became habitually sick and tired of watching the Hawks hand out thrashings to their side. But Melbourne’s empahtic 55-point win at the MCG on Saturday has truly put a fork in the Hawk and turned that history well and truly on its head. The Demons have now won nine of their last ten encounters with the other result, a draw.     And like a fork, it was the multi-pronged options that Melbourne had all across the ground.  It certainly helped that Hawthorn
