No doubt they'll use covid as an excuse and it may well have disrupted plans. But for an organisation that has had this as a key issue for decades excuses no longer gain traction. Covid or not we just want answers and action.

Yes - there is an excuse every year: change of coach; youngest team in the comp (a few times); injuries and now COVID. Other teams seem to rise above these problems or at least look like it. We canโ€™t, as a club, keep looking for the next excuse to validate our mediocrity. We have a core of very good players just about to hit their prime. It really is now or never.

I was talking specifically about the home training base but you are correct, I have no doubt they will use the "disruption" due to Covid for any poor performances this year neglecting to mention our competitors have had to deal with the same circumstances.

There is no COVID19ย excuse.ย

All 18 Clubs have been given the same circumstances, so deal with it.ย

What are the ramifications for the FD if we don't play finals this year considering the 4 year strategy unveiled at the AGM was to play finals every year from 2020-2023?

If a decision had to be made on Goodwin would the club be able to pay him out considering he is contracted to end of 2022?

What are the implications for the board who approved Goodwin's contract extension if we are hamstrung by that contract?

When will we hear any concrete announcements regarding a home base? Timeframes?

What revenue streams are we going to rely on to make up the lost revenue after we exit from the pokies?

What other revenue streams are the board working on to make up the shortfall in revenue in 2020?

Have the AFL confirmed we will be hosting Anzac Eve and Queens Birthday next year?

That's a start

ย

Yep, Id like to ask the same type of question about all of our targets and what he believes needs to happen to each one.

Guys as I am about to be locked up I willย  be visiting my daughter and grand daughters tomorrow evening before the cut off so I probably won't hear the pod cast live. Will I be able to hear it later on?

i think we can forget point 4 entirely, which obviously has severe ramifications on point 2, but the first and the last are the main queries i want posed to bartlett

if @Demonlandย can address all of those items and what the ramifications of failure on each of them or, in the case of the last, an actual timeline on the latter then i'd be happy

1) what happens with coaching and football dept. if point 1 is not achieved in 2020?

2) when will the casey field facility be completed?

3) what is the actual timeline of the announcement of a plan - not even detail of it, just the timing! - to be announced for a 'home base facility?

4) given the effects of covid, is casey field facility a fallback option if the 'home base facility' shows itself to be an impossibility?

5) how are positioned to survive from a financial perspective given the shortfalls expected in points 2 and 4 as a result of covid-19?

6) point 3 is a classic ambition of every workplace, but how can we expected to attract new on-field talent given our consistently poor performance - 1 finals series in 14 years - for the majority of the lives of players 28 and under?

A penny for his thoughts on our players Covid suspensions vs McKenna and assuming the wet lettuce leaf the Pies players get away with..

Well unfortunately it has. Some of these things have been severely affected by COVID and that is out of the clubโ€™s hands.ย

The on fieldย ย football stuff to an extent has also been disrupted by COVID.ย

I do hope not every answer is COVID but itโ€™s naive to think it hasnโ€™t had a massive effect across the board.ย

But all clubs are affected by Covid, The MFC are not special in this

We cannot hide

Would be very interested to know if Burgess' contract is just the 1 year, as that seems to have been the implication in all the media reporting but has not seemingly been confirmed or denied by the club.

Given Mr Bartlett has said today on SEN that the "expectation is to play finals" in the same interview where the club has pleaded for financial donations, what are the ramifications if we don't meet expectations?

I caught almost allย of the interview - have to say, he sounded exhausted!ย I admire his chutzpah in maintaining the previous commitment to finals this year: he couldโ€™ve gone down the COVID excuseย line.

To add to Lord Nevโ€™s question above, Iโ€™d also ask what the ramifications are to the coaching side of things, should we not hit our target? Would it depend upon how close or far away we end up?

Nope.

https://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/735403/we-don-t-use-covid-19-as-an-excuse-bartlett

โ€œWe rolled out some club values at the start of the year and some expectations, and one of them is that weโ€™re not going to use COVID-19 as an excuseโ€

โ€œOur expectation is to play finals.

โ€œWe set out a strategic plan at the start of the year for the next four years and that plan hasnโ€™t been altered.

โ€œWe can still absolutely assess the performance on and off the field - the performance of our coaching group, our playing group, everyone across the club.

โ€œAbsolutely you need to take into account the circumstances weโ€™ve faced, but also how weโ€™ve dealt with those challenges and circumstances.โ€

I read this as an admission by the club that our response to COVID is where we can, and should, be analysed (i.e. rather than saying "COVID means this season's a write off", we need to accept COVID changes things but grade our performance based on how we adapt).

What he's actually saying, if I read the articles correctly (I didn't hear the interview), is that we've decided to ask our supporters for donations and if we can get $1M in donations by the end of the year, we won't need to rely on an AFL assistance.

That, to me, is not an unreasonable financial decision. If we have a wealthy supporter base, why not try to tap into that before we have to go to the AFL?

I also don't think that's inconsistent with us saying we should still be playing finals.

Can I just call this out?

@Demonlandย and others go to significant effort to run the podcast and to get someone as important as Bartlett as a guest.

This isn't a hard-hitting investigative piece of journalism, it's an online forum.

How about, if you want to ask the club a question, you do it, and otherwise don't [censored] and moan about questions possibly not being asked of Bartlett tonight.ย

This.

We appreciate Glen's time and the club's willingness to allow guests on our podcast and we're not going to badger our guests. We will be asking pertinent questions but we're not going hold Glen's feet to the fire.

Sorry, maybe I should have been clearer.

What I'm saying is, if we're in such a poor financial situation; what are the realistic ramifications from a football department point of view if we don't meet the expectations he has set?

To use a crude example, if the season is judged as a failure due to the coaching, how can we possibly afford to pay out Goodwin's contract? I just wonder if the expectations actually have any teeth given the financial implications.

  • PREGAME: St. Kilda

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
