Making an announcement of the return date today and then next week is the actual fixture.

 

Could we see crowds at AFL games in 2020? It looms as arguably the most important question left unanswered as we approach an official return to football.

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan refused to rule the possibility out in an interview on 3AW.

“I’m just going to be speculating. Where we are today, the health officers and the government will say we’ve beaten expectations,” McLachlan said.

“I don’t know, I know that it’s less likely than likely, but I reckon it is in the hands of the community and how well we continue to socially distance and be disciplined as things begin to open up.

“It’s less likely than likely, but I’ll leave that with the people making those decisions, the government and the health ministers.”

They will be lucky to get through the season.

It's coming into winter here and that's a time when respiratory viruses really kick in...

We could be far from on the downhill side of this one.

I'm with you, I want to see how the next month plays out.

In her article on the AFL'S response to the Crows training breach, Caro claimed the weak response was due to the fact other clubs had done it too; specifically, two old Melbourne clubs.

My first thoughts were Carltank and the Pies. Anyone have any inside info/goss?

No-one's asking him to. He's set the rules for his state & the AFL are abiding by them while working to restart the competition. He's the one biatching & moaning.

Let's do a hypothetical. St Kilda & Melbourne relocate to a WA hub, serving the 14 day quarantine. The AFL arranges the fixture accordingly & Saints, Demons, Dockers & Eagles play each other in 3 rounds. But the covid-19 situation hasn't changed sufficiently for the WA health authorities to consider re-opening their borders. What happens then ? Other teams can't come in because they'll need to do 14 day quarantine. 

 

 

The AFL’s decision to not make flu vaccinations compulsory is set to be cancelled out for a host of clubs travelling to Queensland to get the season away.

Foxfooty.com.au revealed on May 8 the league had taken the opposite approach to the NRL, recommending a flu shot to its players but not making it mandatory.

Although both native Queensland teams (the Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast Suns) have been compliant so far in getting flu shots, the state’s ‘no jab, no play’ policy effectively means other clubs relocating there, from both Western Australia and South Australia, will have the choice taken out of their hands.

Surely any of the WA and SA sides relocating to Queensland will be playing home games whilst up there until they can start playing back in their respective states?  I read something recently suggesting that it would be Victorian side that forfeit their home games to play up there which can't be right. 

I understand that from a training and playing perspective that the weather conditions might be more conducive if they're based up there for a period of time but they can't have it both ways where potentially everyone else travels up there to play them before then returning home to get a run of games at the back end of the year where they don't have to leave their own states. 

To me it would make more sense to have at least some of them based in Victoria where they do something similar to Gold Coast when the Commonwealth Games were taking place at Metricon by having away games at the front end of the season and genuine home games at the back end when restrictions are hopefully lifted. If they haven't been then they can make a decision to nominate Queensland as a home base for those games when they would have had plenty of time to work on the logistics to get their set up just right. 

Playing genuine home games at the back end of the year would then see them having the advantage that Richmond had last year in the run up to the finals which has got them all jumping up and down. 

Whilst based in Victoria at the front end of the season they could perhaps stay in relative isolation from the public at one of the accommodated wineries down on the peninsula where they could take over the entire place whilst it's effectively mothballed during winter. They could then be bussed to Sorrento to train for example.

We might get through to June 11, a little like we scrapped through to the first round  but all bets are off after that.

If they're relying on player discipline for 5 months as part of the formula then we have no hope.

...but a 2nd wave will finish things off before we get to that.

 

 

Interesting that no player has returned a positive result (does that mean they never had it as well).

I'm interested in the concept of random sampling and AFL players are a good random cross section of the young population

Surely AFL will schedule the first 7 rounds split between 

Suns, Lions, Crows, Power, Eagles, Dockers, Swans, Giants - play each other in Qld, NSW HUB

Remaining 10 Victorian teams stay in Vic.  Nil travel outside the state.  That gets the draw to round 8 after end of July with 9 rounds to play.  Review fixtures in 1st week of July for remainder of the year.
