Casey Demons Offseason News

Featured Replies

Don't know a lot about Kurt Mutimer.ย Quick, tough left footer apparently, and a former Eagle who at 22 is young enough to push his case for an AFL chance again.

Thought it was an interesting prospect given his assets, and how we've used Casey to have a look at players in the past.

ย

Thought he was a solid prospect in his draft year.

Did a lot of things well without necessarily standing out in any area. Thought he might be a good one to run off a flank for us, but behind a few at WC. Happy to see him have a go at Casey.

Local boy too, went to Hallam SC, always good to have some young kids come back from the area and get involved. Was rated a bit during his draft year as well.ย  Will run through the mids it seems which is good for Casey.

ย

Dees rated Mutimer but Eagles grabbed him. He has good talent and run, and importantly is a very good kick. Hope he makes the most of the chance to impress. ย

The Casey Demons are also chasing the signature of formerย Gold Coast Sun Jack Leslie who was surprisingly delisted at the end of the season. Leslie played some impressive games in defence and I wouldnโ€™t rule out a future return to AFL.

Post script: More on Mutimer here -

VFL: Casey makes key signings

Dandenong Stingrays playersย Jarryd Barker and Corey Ellison areย also training at Casey.

Paul Amy tweeting that โ€œLachlan Lamble training well at Casey under his former school teacher, Demons VFL coach Sammy Radford. Lamble won the St Bedeโ€™s College best and fairest this year in a team that won the Herald Sun Shield for the first time.โ€œ

Paul Amy has tweeted that the Casey Demons have made three good signings from Gippsland Power โ€” Josh Smith, Tye Hourigan and Ryan Sparkes. The Demons are keen to nab a fourth Power graduate in midfielder Riley Baldi who was on the fringe of getting drafted.ย

Any news on Jack Leslie coming to Casey??
Big defender. Strong and quick.

Injuries has impacted on his past few years but 2019 showed he was good enough in AFL quality.ย

Was a very good junior and Iย thought heโ€™d be a reasonableย chance to get picked up post Suns delisting. One to watch in 2020 hopefully in a Casey jumper.ย

Thanks KC, always appreciate your info on the Casey boys.

Do you know when the fixture will be announced? Mrs Worship and I try to get to a few games every year and did well last year in getting to six, although the game at Coburg was a bit challenging weather wise and that's coming from someone from Ballarat.

Leslieโ€™s currently in discussion with Williamstown.

Hi KC

do you know if they have redone the drainage at the oval. It was seriously bad in recent years.

Thanks

Not sure. I havenโ€™t been out there during the cricket season. I will try to check.

Thanks. Thatโ€™s not good. Willy probably offer guaranteed game time andย find extra $$$ to throw in. ย

Williamstown signed up Jack Leslie. ย He is one to keep watch on as he proved a very versatileย tall defender at AFL level. ย Willy seems to always recruit very well and Andy Collins obviously drives a good discussion around the opportunity to โ€œplayโ€ consistent game time at a stand alone non aligned club. I think they also have some $$$$$ to offer which helps recruit other VFL Players like Corey Rich and Luke Meadows. They lost GF by 3 points last year and imo will be top 2-3 again. ย

Andrew Courtney, aย 201cm ruckman/forwardย from the Sandringham Dragons has signed with the Casey Demons.ย

AFL Draft Central

He joins another ruckman/forward in 195cm Josh Smith (Gippsland Power & Vic Country), 185cm utility, Ryan Sparkes and 190cm defender Tye Hourigan, both also from Gippsland Power.ย

KC - would your thoughts be that Courtney and Smith would mainly play in theย 2nds asย backup/ development type role for Casey.ย  I'm not sure I canย see how he'd regularly fit into a side that is likely to have either or both Preuss and Jackson holding down the ruck for most of the season.

Sorry guys, I think I need to put my hand up here and take responsibility for putting the jinx on poor old Maxy.ย  ?

There are no 2nds any more:

https://vfl.com.au/developmentleague/

" With no Development League in 2018, the club structure for those eight clubs affected will move to one similar to that currently used by clubs such as Collingwood, Essendon, Geelong, Footscray, North Ballarat and Richmond, where players not selected at VFL level will play local football. "

I have to agree RG if you add in Bradke, there are 3-4ย  in front of him to play his position. it would need an extraordinary run of injuries for him to get a regular game. Perhaps Casey see him playing as a tall forward?

I donโ€™t think Smith is tall enough to play in the ruck. However, he did show in his Under 18 games for Vic Country that he has the makings of a solid KPF.ย

I donโ€™t know enough about Courtney. However, I will add that height is a definite asset at VFL level. It wasnโ€™t all that long ago that Casey had a young tall by the name of Oscar McInerney who was borderline seniors/development league. Now heโ€™s a regular with the Brisbane Lions.

If I'm not mistaken KC, there is a requirement to play a 23rd AND 24th man this year?

I also believe these Casey players will be guaranteed around 6 games so we will see them chopping and changing during the season baring injuries. Hope I have that right?

Thereโ€™s been someย interest in the 8 Casey listedย players who took part in yesterdayโ€™s practice match so weโ€™ve asked KC from Casey for a bit of an update on the players who took part. On what I saw, the club should do well in this yearโ€™s VFL competition.

As far as Iโ€™m aware the rule change is -

โ€ข VFL clubs will have a development list introduced, made up of 19-year-old players.

โ€ข All clubs will be required to play 23 players per match, which will include 1 x 19-year-old development player and 1 x under-21 player (i.e traditional 23rd player).

I was impressed with Courtney. I think he could well challenge Preuss and Bradtke for a ruck spot.

  • PREGAME: St. Kilda

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
