We should be rewarded for not screwing with the careers of Dangerfield, Rioli or Rance. Morton had a heap of talent and no development.

Perhaps a compensation pick like they give out for free agents. After all we did the AFL a big favor.

Look at all those names we poo pooed to get Morton.

We're our own worst enemy.

Hindsight is such a beautiful thing, after their first 2 years 2008/09 all the talk was that we had a great pick who'd easily play 200+ games. Morton averaged over 18 touches in his first year then bumped that up over 22 in year 2, well above Cotchin, miles above Danger and Ward. Then I think he got injured in 2010 and never came back the same player or developed in what he looked like he could be.

Anyway, it's a definite no for Masten, his biggest attribute is his ability to run all day, but he's slowed down so much that he's just not worth a second of consideration.

Not only that, but he was very highly rated as a junior, with some scouts believing he wouldn't be out of place as the first pick in the draft.  It's not as if we picked him from obscurity, or he was projected to go in the second round.

Melbourne fans love the self flagellation of looking at who we could have selected in drafts.  It's pointless.

Spot on, but it's all clubs and their supporters - at least those who follow clubs who haven't won a heap of premierships lately. The reality is all clubs have guys they have overlooked, Fyfe for instant was overlooked by every club, including Freo. There's so many variables when drafting, that only hindsight at the end of their careers says if they got it wrong or right. After 2 years Morton was a great recruit while Danger was a dud. End of their careers and it's so far the other way it isn't funny.

The absolute essence of a 'vanilla' player.  No thanks.

I have watched him a fair bit this year as i watched a lot of WC games.

He is an absolute diabolical ball butcher! Runs and spreads hard but that's about it.

Hopefully he goes to Gold Coast.

We are getting Ed Langdon so unless he was willing to play for pretty much nothing i'm not sure why we'd be chasing him.

Depth with injuries was an issue but obviously the price point is the key with Masten.

All in all i'd be thinking other clubs could make a better offer to him.

For those with short memories here is the 2007 draft in which master was taken, There are some interesting names and he was taken pick 3 just before Cale Morton. McEvoy at 9 and Dangerfield at 10 with Rioli at 12 wow. Shows that the gems can be later than expected. Furthermore Tarrant at 15 harry taylor 17 and Alex Rance 18. For me I think we can do better than Masten

How about Masten on one wing and ANB on the other? You'd love it dazzler

Richmond got rance with a priority pick. I had completely forgotten that. Good get.

Depends on price doesn't it? if the question is would i rather Masten or Wagner or ANB in the side i think it's a pretty easy answer if we get him as a DFA and no huge $$

Yep.

You could argue that 16 of that group of 19, were better than our 2 picks and one of ours was pick 4.

A disaster. Unfortunately one of many.

We'd probably get a better result using a dart board with Cale in the centre.

First throw would be a bulls-eye ?

I'm still suffering MFCSS

Morton instead of Dangerfield?? I think I'm Gunna be Sick!!

Morton's first 2 years were good. Really good.

After that we're to blame for his demise as much as he is. Probably more

Masten is a ball butcher. Always has been

That table doesn't even include the worst pick of the bunch - Addam Maric at 21.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

The media focus on the fiery interaction between Max Gawn and Steven May at the end of the game was unfortunate because it took away the gloss from Melbourne’s performance in winning almost everywhere but on the scoreboard in its Kings Birthday clash with Collingwood at the MCG. It was a real battle reminiscent of the good old days when the rivalry between the two clubs was at its height and a fitting contest to celebrate the 2025 Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher and his superb work to bring the campaign to raise funds for motor neurone disease awareness to the forefront. Notwithstanding the fact that the Magpies snatched a one point victory from his old club, Daniher would be proud of the fact that his Demons fought tooth and nail to win the keenly contested game in front of 77,761 fans.

The Demons are set to embark on a four-week road trip that takes them across the country, with two games in Adelaide and a clash on the Gold Coast, broken up by a mid-season bye. Next up is a meeting with the inconsistent Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • POSTGAME: Collingwood

Despite effectively playing against four extra opponents, the Dees controlled much of the match. However, their inaccuracy in front of goal and inability to convert dominance in clearances and inside 50s ultimately cost them dearly, falling to a heartbreaking one-point loss on King’s Birthday.
