Would love Ooze to join our FD, but would equally like us to make a play for Hodgey now that his playing career is over

We’ve got a few vacancies - let’s get both of them.

Hodge is absolutely locked in at Brisbane for next year and probably the short/medium term but it's worth working on him now for if/when he comes back to Victoria.

Yep, Fagan was saying this morning that Hodge will be a part time coach for them next year as well as doing some media and corporate work while he decides what he wants to do in the long term.

Scotty Burns is now red hot favourite to replace Pyke.  scott-burns-favourite-to-be-next-crows-coach

Burns is another from the Clarkson coaching school.

Having just lost Darren Glass (assistant coach) to WCE as List Manager, does Burns' departure mean there is less chance of prizing Yze from Hawks...

For me, the lack of noise and action on this now suggests its not going to happen.. and you would have to assume our sights are set on coaches that are still in the final 4, because we have at least 2 spots to fill?

Macca - Richo

Jennings - ??

Rawlings - ??

Personally, I would very much like:

Macca - Richo

Jennings - Yze

Rawlings - Plapp (Casey)

Plapp - Andy Collins

That's a good list and i like the Collins name thrown into the mix..  Im  a fan of Giansiracusa, but cant see him leaving the dogs. Of the 4 sides  left in it: Scarlett would be great from Cats - but cant see that either. No one at GWS apart from a Lenny Hayes but has recently re-signed, at the Pies i like them all, Harvey, Hocking and Longmuir, plus Matt Boyd and the Tigers have Kingsley who is very well regarded.

Yes, and that’s probably who Garry Lyon was referring to in that interview that got this thread in a bit of a lather (myself included). Makes me think he’s not actually going anywhere.

Burns is a South Australian too so this isn't surprising.

It possibly does somewhat unfortunately. May come down to what role the Hawks want Yze for in 2020 as opposed to the role we want him for. He's still contracted to the Hawks, but clubs generally let assistants go if it's for a promotion. If Burns leaves it does hurt our chances a little IMO.

Burns’ name comes up whenever there’s a senior vacancy, the fact he’s from SA has probably added fuel to the fire. Even if he does take the Adelaide job, I still think Yze will leave. I’m lead to believe and I’m of the understanding that Yze leaving has been planned for quite some time.

Are you inferring that ETthetradebreaker©️™️ makes things up as he goes?

(For real heard the plan was for him to move on elsewhere).

Still no nooze on ooze?

In fact no news on anyone. i mean Nth Melbourne have manged to replace assistant coaches, Essendon have done the same, so have Carlton and Hawthorn, we lose 3 major coaching cogs, replace 1, dont announce what his role is and dont hear a single thing regarding likely replacements.. except speculation on here on who might be good.

And yes i know.. be patient and all that and we dont leak and just because its not in the news blah blah blah but it feels suspiciously quiet on this front to me.

I actually do wonder whether we have announced further appointments because the people we have appointment are currently contending in finals? Should we expect an announcement either this week or next?

Things have cooled somewhat, not sure if it's due to the Hawks waiting on Burns, but possible. Yze is contracted for next year, he's in the middle of a 2 year contract, but as mentioned earlier, teams let assistants leave for a promotion (which could be another factor).

Word is he thinks the list is in a good place and from the outside there's some obvious answers to our problems currently, so I think he's still very much considering the move in a positive way.

Fingers crossed.

Do you agree LN that its very quiet on our replacements for Assistant coaches though? i know we have speculated but i haven't heard anything in the press at all.

Yeah, but it seems relatively quiet in general on that front, at least from what I've seen in the media. I know they usually let them know in August, so maybe it's just still getting past all the obstacles of finals, post-season holidays and interviews etc.

Not happening now.

He was keen. Hawks upped the ante, convinced him that his future was with them and that they expect him to honour the second year of his contract. Would have been a perfect get for our current needs.

He's apparently pretty shattered he wasn't able to make it happen.

Will it be on the cards for next year then?

Don't know, but gut feel is no. Sounds like the Hawks really value him and the next time he leaves them (if he does) it will be to be a senior coach.

This is a bit of kick in the guts.. he was a great fit.

Not sure. That was the only whisper I'd heard about incoming assistants at this stage.

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
