VIney  three years ago oooozed passion for the club and tried his guts out. Second efforts, tackling, etc. tonight he was deplorable. I don’t think he is respected by teammate And I am led to believe it’s because many players see him as being protected and promoted due to family connections. He needs to relinquish captaincy immediately. His heart isn’t in it. Gawn must Captain the side in 2020

If we’re hanging our club’s future on an 18 year old kid saving our midfield structure we may as well go back to the days of Dean Bailey throwing Jack Watts under an enormous bus

But we won’t as there’s another 4 that we’ve seen when firing can more than handle the load themselves. Anderson up forward can be his release. Either way I don’t see us getting him as GC are more than likely to get gifted one of the best 1-2 combo this draft

Is 'led to believe' a fancy way of saying I'm going to throw an idea out there and see if it gains traction?

The question to answer there is,

Is it true he was promoted due to family name and backing? And that is a yes for me.

Big difference between the opinions of unknowing supporters believing an 18 year old can suddenly transform the midfield than experienced football personal who I have no doubt would already have  worked out the solution for the future

Maybe some players think it but I doubt it is the reality.

I just think handing him the captaincy was very poor judgement on Goodwin's behalf.

My opinion here from observation & 2nd hand information is that he is extremely focussed & a lot of players don't relate to that. He may not have the emotional IQ that good leaders need.

Well, he calls his wife the missus on radio so I doubt he speaks with human emotion to all the players.

Regardless of what you think about them they still no more about the game than the supporters do.

Extremely hard to see that given some of the team selections in recent weeks, and thats fact.

Have heard similar things tbh.

Might seem like a silly example, but if you want some kind of external 'proof' of this then look at the player interviews from the last few years where they ask "Who is the coaches pet?" The answer every time has been Viney. Now obviously that's meant as lighthearted entertainment, but without installing nanny cams in the locker rooms it's as close as you're going to get to an actual insight.

If you or any other supporter thinks they know more than the football dept. you are delusional and that is a fact

YOu are on the money. He doesn’t relate to many of his teammates. That was the word I was given. Jones did, but is also a different age bracket to a lot of the younger guys and is becoming less focussed on football. We need a change. It’s simple

I think we will see a change 'Leoncelli'...I just hope they don't take the easy way and make it a Gawn/Viney co captain situation.

It's Max time...sole captain. Make the hard call club...

The stats don't support that view.  If you take Pressure Acts, Contested Possessions and Tackles as the measure then it's easy to see which Captain has dropped their bundle this year in terms of work rate:

Avgs:                   Pressure Acts,                      Contested Possessions                 Tackles

Career                   Viney 20.4, Jones 11.1       Viney 10.9, Jones 8.5                       Viney 5.8, Jones 3.7

2019                       Viney 21.5, Jones 11.0       Viney 9.3, Jones 6.8                       Viney 5.3, Jones 2.2

2018                       Viney 21.0, Jones 15.4       Viney 13.5, Jones 9.0                     Viney 5.9, Jones 3.7

2017                       Viney 21.5, Jones 16.3       Viney 11.8, Jones 9.4                     Viney 7.0, Jones 5.4

2016                       Viney 21.0, Jones 17.1       Viney 12.8, Jones 10.5                   Viney 7.0, Jones 5.4

2015                       Viney 18.4, Jones 14.9      Viney 12.1, Jones 9.9                      Viney 6.6, Jones 4.3

2014                       Viney 19.6, Jones 16.4      Viney 8.7, Jones 11.6                      Viney 4.4, Jones 5.2

2013                       Viney 18.8, Jones 13.4      Viney 9.2, Jones 10.9                      Viney 4.2, Jones 3.5

Viney is rated elite for Pressure Acts and tackles and above average in contested Possessions.  Jones is rated as below average for Pressure acts and average for Contested Possessions and tackles (below average for all three this year).

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

It was bad enough that the Melbourne Football Club created yet another humiliating scenario inside its wretched season at Marvel Stadium last Sunday, but the final insult is that it has been commanded to return to the scene of the crime to inflict further punishment on its fans this week. Incidentally, if this match preview, of a game that promises to be one of the most unattractive fixtures in the history of the game, happens to cut out of your computer screen three quarters of the way through, it’s no coincidence. I’ll be mirroring the Demons’ lacklustre effort against St Kilda from last Sunday when they conceded the largest last quarter turnaround for victory in the history of the game.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.

The Demons return to the scene of the crime on Saturday to face the wooden spooners the Eagles at the Docklands. Who comes in and who goes out? Like moving deck chairs on the Titanic.
