And just to add to the above. That is why Fritsch had to play back for so many weeks.

secondly, when our stars were all up and running last year, some ordinary players looked ok. Oscar played a number of good games, ANB was pretty good, even Spargo held a place in a prelim final team. Hannan was often excellent.

when the stars are missing the second and third tier players look v different

My only wish is that one day (hopefully sooner rather than later), good players from other clubs look at Melbourne and think, "Hey, I would love to play for that team. They are really going places and are on the way up. I could enjoy some success with them."

Is this ever going to happen? ? (In my lifetime?)

Lever, May, Lewis...er MITCH CLARK?

Statistically is is absolutely an aberration.  And Lyonbhas waited till the season was far enough gone that we couldn't turn it around.

He's not exactly sticking his neck out.

The thing i find amusing is that we are actually playing some reasonable footy and i would say that our form is on the up for the first time this season.

The strategic concern is now how do we prove that we have a good list that is worthy of attracting an Ed Langdon and a good small forward.

Langdon plays for Freo, surely we're much more attractive? Our game style will suit him much better. I'm not a draft expert but there's been a lot of good mature age small forwards plucked from state leagues lately, so we could add a couple who might be able to make a difference quickly.

You're right about our form being on the up, given we don't really have a forward line it's been good to see how competitive we've been. You wouldn't know it on here though, I could have sworn we lost by 100 reading on here Sunday night

I literally said this in my post. Did you stop reading about this sentence?

I said they needed time to play together and that Lever and Jetta both are not fit.

It was not passing judgement on the backline, it was merely an observation that while our backline is all on the field finally, it isn’t performing to the level we would like due to the above.

Haven't yet noticed any commentator, footy program or member of the MFC football dept. explain the holding the ball decision made against Max. Why is that? If it was a free kick according to the rules wouldn't an ambitious member of the (football) media want to impress the public with his/her astute reading of the rules? Its been relatively quiet on that front, while other contentious decisions from the weekend have been discussed on every program. If it was a shocker by the umpire in question, wouldn't the AFL come out and admit that a mistake was made... or vica versa? All quiet on that front as well... I have an opinion on this silent response by media and officials, but I would like to hear what others think.

Possibly a bit to do with that Shorty (HP fitness & conditioning ...Misson?).

Add a very poor forward list that can't convert in front of goal (excluding Fritschkreig who played his first game as a genuine forward for most of the match...until he began playing a HHF role late in the game and became less effective); and

Goody's obsession in persisting with the manic chaos game for the entire match = inevitable major fatigue fail / intensity drop = opposition coming over the top FTW.

Agreed, and in addition, Clarrie is asked to do too much week in, week out. May he receive our blessings for the workload and application that he provides for the first three quarters, week in, week out.

Well the AFL have come out and said that two fend off decisions in the ruck were wrong - 1 for Ben Brown and 1 in the Lions game -  but no comment on Max's infringement ("That's ruck craft big boy")

yet again clubs squeal about decisions and you don't hear a peep from melbourne about stupid decisions against our players. We are really soft when it comes to sticking up for the club.

Many during the week predict we'll get smashed by 10 goals. We lead into the last quarter, lose by just over 2 goals courtesy of an opposition goal from the worst decision of the game, lose Viney by half time , we're playing the reigning premiers and people still come on here and smash the coach and/or the team. Where is the perspective ?

What's that got to do with the weekends game.

I hate those fat head Weasles, I mean Eagles. Huge egos all of them. If I recall some Melbourne players were bagged earlier in the season for over celebrating. Did anyone see Yeo go all over the top when he kicked that goal, after he did nothing else all day? Just want Melbourne to one day beat these big heads. They had their chances on Sunday. That's what makes losing so disappointing.

I think it is because we have become irrelevant again as someone else has said.

Another MRO outcome based on the media. There was nothing about Tom Barrass giving Viney concussion yet had it of been Steven May doing the same actions and giving someone concussion i have no doubt he would have got a week.

Quote

after disposing of the football Barrass is met by Viney and braces for contact. It was the view of the MRO that Barrass did not elect to bump Viney

Take your pick from our game. Players blocked off the ball, players ducking their heads and no holding the ball called even though the rule states it's deemed prior opportunity, Lockhart copping it high while already in a tackle and getting called holding the ball, max getting called holding the ball etc etc

Amen to that 56.  Albeit a fair way off the same ferocity / intensity and 2nd efforts of Clarry, we can add Harmes, Big M and Salem into that category.

Big gap between them and the rest this year.  Mega drop off for some.

I stopped listening to the 7 commentary after the Swans game when it was clear they only wanted one team to win on the night.

Completely biased towards the top / interstate clubs and, outside of Carey,  they all pander to the AFL's favoured club/player agenda when it comes to poor umpiring decisions.

Is Carey still on there?  Be very surprised if his contract gets renewed.  Mao Tse Gill would be on to him in a flash.  His inappropriate comrade speak from earlier this season might have been shut down already!

Thats a disgraceful but predictable "interstate / Top 4 Vic club biased outcome".  Another Mao Tse Gill endorsed special.

If the club says / does nothing about that then we stand for absolutely nothing and may as well pack our bags.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
