Foxtel losing money hand over fist... and little chance of growing revenue dramatically plus FTA ad revenues being slashed by digital marketing,. Well reported in the financial press that we have seen the top for the lesser sports and AFL on  a global basis is a lesser sport

It'll just move to Kayo (Foxtel). I think you'll find the TV rights will be astronomical during the next term, bigger than this time around. If Kayo/Foxtel/Murdoch don't get them, Kayo/Foxtel are done in this territory. The AFL will know this and will maximise their deal.

A third (/turd) WA team to weaken the Eagles dominance would be a good thing for the comp.  The Sand Groapers would love the idea, until they realize the implications and then it would be too late and they would have fractured the Eagles support base, recruiting edge and finacial clout.

Everything else about your proposal makes too much sense for the AFL to ever adopt though, although I'd personally still keep a top 8 with 20 teams.  Making finals should still be an elite accomplishment.

Well the equalization measures suggests that we'll have a logjam in the middle, so i think you need a few more spots to accommodate, 10 in 10 out has a nice symmetry to it.

I have a counter point though. Is rewarding the elite accomplishment of finishing 5th and 6th with a home final enough reward? If you're a team like Geelong or St Kilda, then it means nothing when the game is at the MCG and you're playing an MCG team. At least with a top 10, you're giving 5th and 6th an extra weeks rest, and demoting 7th and 8th to an elimination final round vs 9th and 10th straight after the regular season. You'd probably be fresher for a semi final too against a top 4 team.

I'm comfortable creating three tiers. top 4, 5 & 6 and then 7-10 but only in the event of a 20 team comp.

Would like him as an assistant at Melbourne. He loves his players, is tactically sound, has done okay with some really poor lists.

if every fifth person in Australia subscribed to Kayo that would give a gross revenue for Kayo of $1billion per year.

Present AFL rights are $400M.. NFL $250M and cricket $150M .. per year.

The sums will never add up.

What add another key forward who will struggle to kick goals with the rubbish entries we throw up? I would rather a polished midfielder.

Can't help but think that it's a done deal and he's the next Blues coach.

With North and probably Carlton and Saints looking for a new coach they may be looking in our direction, specifically Rawlings or Jennings.

I been outside,  working on the boat trailer... so Hearing the Scott news shortly before working outside,  I hadn't considered the ramifications of the Coaches Merry-go-Rround.

But i reckon discussions would have been held with Scott's manager,  by other clubs,  well before this week.   Probably since the end of the 2018 season

I reckon the Blues would have been into him for sure.  They need an experienced coach...   and i reckon there would have been a  'price',  for them to consider.    I reckon they've considered,  and accepted.

The Saints are in a less desperate,  situation...  and probably could be more creative with their ideas.

Nah I want a fresh Tasmanian team, they would be most peoples affectionate 2nd team we all want to see succeed and rooting for the Roos is just too unpalatable.

The AFL missed that boat,, GCSuns.... Nth going North.

Those Blue and White stripes would have looked fantastic up there...  in the Queensland's Sunshine.

IMO the warmer coloured Jumper,  would have appeared better down Sth,  in Tassy.

Rawlings has been around long enough now, been really good for the club but may need a change.

Would he be happy living in Tassie,  'rj'.?

So what if Foxtel keel over and die. Another streaming service will take up the slack.

As long as supporters want to watch the game, the value will rise

AFL pump money into them along with a mega training facility courtesy of the Federal and Tasmanian State governments. This would be ready in say three years at which time the club would move all its admin etc to Tasmania.

It has seemed inevitable for about 3 years that North will end up in Tassie. When that happens is the question but if North don't move up the ladder with their next coach, then the AFL may step in with some "suggestions".

I don't care about that so much as ... what happens to Arden St? Some enterprising club could make approaches to the relevant council to make sure that facility doesn't sit idle  ...

A bit selfish to leave the club in caretaker mode for half the year and leave players in limbo, particularly recent arrivals and those coming out of contract this year.

Can't help but feel he has lined up or is lining up the next gig.

I read it that North went to him and gently suggested that they weren't going to see out his contract but they didn't want the circus of a mid-season sacking and would he mind coaching out the season while they lined up their next coach ... and Scott suggested that they go forth and multiply.

Sacked coaches without a flag in their resume tend to have trouble finding new head jobs. (Don't start.) For some reason Voss is being talked about a lot right now. But surely clubs are thinking, he didn't do it at his last club. How sure are we that he's good for another stab at it? Maybe he isn't? Who will risk 3 years of their club's future on a flunked coach?

Carlton will be spewing. I think they had the scheme to let Bolton coach out the season while they sorted out their next coach in peace and quiet and now North have upset the applecart. Bull market for assistant would-be-senior coaches.

the general consensus seems to be that scott has another gig lined up, be it at carltank or the aints

i think he's tactically quite astute, but i'd argue north's list is 'better' than carltank's, and about par with the aints

it's not like his twin, who inherited a champion team - if they hadn't won that premiership in his first year in charge i wonder what would have happened to him, given the puddy tatts' taxpayer advantages and incredible 'star' recruiting

really, cats should've at least made a couple more gf's in his time at the club

and, fwiw, i think the cats are clearly the premiership faves at this point in time

The figures don't lie....

As Kerry Packer once said an Alan Bond only comes along once in a lifetime and there will not be another streaming service that is prepared to lose A$300M a year in Australia alone.

The world has begun to  "spin'  backwards.  in more than one sense.

The West is battling, with the generation of the East...  thanks to greedy Director's in Multinational's boardrooms.

Inflation is dying,  unable to sustain any real interest rates...  and people are getting really self-centred, and holding what they've got...  and not caring about young people who are stuck in the rental trap.

Wages are failing to raise to any sort of sustainable living standard...  and full-time work a thing of the past,  because we sold our Manufacturing sector out... and let the East take it from us.

In short we are the downward slide,  with wages marching in the direction of a world Parity,  on Wealth.

Then,  Manufacturing will come back to Local markets, trading locally.  cutting out the middle men and they importers will shrink... apart from the Spice Trade.  Oh wait,  we can grow most of these as well.

So  who has, and who will have,  wealth enough, to pay for Luxury's like Pay TV... and other little nik-naks.?

The Iron is hot  'MR'...    and the battle for hearts and Tassie minds,  is hotting up,  in Canberra...

I reckon the laundry will be delivered for pressing, sooner,  rather than later.

All things to be considered by a smart coach,  for his future.

those numbers are wrong; news corp's contribution is more like:

afl: $1.3bn / 6 years = $220m pa

nrl: $1bn / 5 years = $200m pa

cricket: $800m / 6 years = $133m pa (although this last one is a guesstimate cos i couldn't find actual breakdown of figures

it's not fox sports tier 1 sports that are a drain on foxtel finances

THE AFL will reap a major financial windfall after striking a colossal new six-year, $2.508 billion broadcast rights agreement.

The new deal will see Channel Seven, Foxtel and Telstra continue as the League's broadcasters under the new deal, which will run from 2017 to 2022.

https://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-08-18/afl-on-the-verge-of-signing-new-tv-deal

The NRL has reportedly signed off on a record $1.8 billion TV deal for seasons 2018 to 2022.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-11-26/nrl-tv-deal/6976996

Cricket Australia has put a tough couple of weeks behind it with a massive new $1.2 billion TV rights deal, which puts ODIs and T20 Internationals behind a pay wall for the first time.

The joint bid between free-to-air operator Seven West Media and pay-TV's Foxtel divides up coverage of all forms of men's and women's cricket over six years and is double the previous $600 million rights package with the Nine Network.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-04-13/cricket-coverage-shakeup-with-seven-and-foxtel-winning-rights/9652964

Of course the unknown in all these deals is the amount paid by Foxtel and the figure paid by the FTA channel. Most media pundits have suggested that the foxtel share is more than half. It has been used as a loss leader by Foxtel but my point is that the Kayo play is evidence that Foxtel has given up on this ploy. Conversely to make money on Kayo they need to reduce the cost of content.

not really...

afl: https://www.smh.com.au/business/companies/afl-to-announce-2b-broadcast-deal-20150818-gj1ppz.html

News Corporation to pay about $1.3 billion of a record $2.508 billion six-year deal the league has struck

nrl: https://www.smh.com.au/business/companies/nrl-inks-18-billion-record-tv-rights-deal-20151126-gl8nvg.html

News Corp's Fox Sports set to pay around $1 billion for the pay television portion of the rights

cricket: http://theconversation.com/seven-and-foxtel-snag-cricket-rights-meaning-more-content-but-maybe-not-for-free-94976

Foxtel will pay A$100 million per year and promises to “show every ball of every over bowled in Australia”, also part of the new deal. Foxtel will have a dedicatedcricket channel.

so it's actually:

  • afl: $1.3bn / 6 years = ~$220m pa
  • nrl: $1bn / 5 years = ~$200m pa
  • cricket: $1bn / 6 years = ~$170m pa

a LOT of that value will be contra advertising too, so the actual cost of it could be less

It's Game Day and the Demons return to the MCG to face the Tigers in their annual Blockbuster on ANZAC Eve for the 10th time. The Dees will be desperate to reignite their stuttering 2025 campaign and claim just their second win of the season. Can the Demons dig deep and find that ANZAC Spirit to snatch back to back wins?

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

A few years ago, the Melbourne Football Club produced a documentary about the decade in which it rose from its dystopic purgatory of regular thrashings to the euphoria of a premiership victory. That entire period could have been compressed in a fast motion version of the 2025 season to date as the Demons went from embarrassing basket case to glorious winner in an unexpected victory over the Dockers last Saturday. They transformed in a single week from a team that put in a pedestrian effort of predictably kicking the ball long down the line into attack that made a very ordinary Bombers outfit look like worldbeaters into a slick, fast moving side with urgency and a willingness to handball and create play with shorter kicks and by changing angles to generate an element of chaos that yielded six goals in each of the opening quarters against Freo.

  • NON-MFC: Round 07

Round 7 gets underway in iconic fashion with the traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster. The high-flying Magpies will be looking to solidify their spot atop the ladder, while the Bombers are desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top eight. Later that evening, Fremantle will be out to redeem themselves after a disappointing loss to the Demons, facing a hungry Adelaide side with eyes firmly set on breaking into the top four. Saturday serves up a triple-header of footy action. The Lions will be looking to consolidate their Top 2 spot as they head to Marvel Stadium to clash with the Saints. Over in Adelaide, Port Adelaide will be strong favourites at home against a struggling North Melbourne. The day wraps up with a fiery encounter in Canberra, where the Giants and Bulldogs renew their bitter rivalry. Sunday’s schedule kicks off with the Suns aiming to bounce back from their shock defeat to Richmond, taking on the out of form Swans. Then the Blues will be out to claim a major scalp when they battle the Cats at the MCG. The round finishes with a less-than-thrilling affair between Hawthorn and West Coast at Marvel. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
