Any thoughts on whether Gary Pert leaving Collingwood was good for them, and him becoming CEO of Melbourne has beeen bad for us?

Do not care about the Filth's condition in losing Pert. Not one little bit. Someone suggested that Pert will be the white knight in saving the Club by procuring a home ground and facilities. Well and good, but already, as a member, I would like to hear/see and witness some current leadership (that he appears to be holding in abeyance at present and since his appointment). The Club really needs this leadership at present and so far, Pert ain't the provider. His predecessor would have totally outscored him at this point of our history and journey into the doldrums - and is already sorely missed. Frozen inactivity is all that I can glean from Pert's appointment.

Why is it ‘trolling’ to suggest there may be a link between documented coterie and inner sanctum discontent at the Pert appointment ... and our extraordinary plummet to the foot of the ladder? You might not subscribe to the theory and that’s fine but again, don’t be frightened of posters who don’t always play to the chorus line you want them to. That’s just plain weak. When someone states an opinion, show maturity and refute it with logic. Or don’t post at all.

Show us the documented proof { and not some media beat up of discontent }.

It was a lot easier two weeks ago when we could just blame everything on Oscar McDonald.

Having said that it is obvious that Peter Jackson did not want Pert as his replacement and if he did not want him then you have to wonder.

Internally, the club wanted Mahoney as Jackson’s replacement. The AFL did not allow Jackson to have a say in his successor.

Read the article.

If you prefer to believe Caro made it up out of thin air that’s your prerogative. I don’t.

“The old Melbourne guard - a vocal and gregarious group of former committeemen, coterie and old Melburnians (the school not the club) - were loud in their condemnation that Bartlett had recruited a Collingwood discard. Admittedly many of this group have had their time at board level with underwhelming results but many still give generously to the club.

Ditto the Demons' most influential past players and ditto a long list of other club CEOs who have great respect for the achievements of the outgoing Peter Jackson and were dismayed that Jackson had been totally shut out of the search for his successor.

Internally in the weeks that led up to and then followed the Pert announcement, Bartlett and his board and notably his influential director Geoff Freeman were confronted with spot fires in a number of directions. Three club executives - George de Crespigny, David Chippindall and the internal favourite Josh Mahoney - were in for the job and initially the view was that the club was
looking at a succession plan.

Mahoney had strong support from his own department - coach Simon Goodwin said so publicly at the start of June much to the chairman's chagrin - and Mahoney's colleagues were extremely disappointed on his behalf when he didn't get the job.”

Big call. Any evidence to back it up? And please not a quote from a journo, unless they cite specific, verifiable evidence not just a 'source'.

As I suggested earlier I wonder about your motivation for the op. My source tells me you have an agenda fuelled by a powerful dislike of Gary Pert.

Got any documented proof of that binman?

I'm confused. In several of your recent hundreds of posts you have lambasted other posters for resorting to personal insults rather than engaging in 'logical' debate.

Any whoo i will take your advice to put you on ignore. If nothing else it will making scrolling through threads much easier.

I can neither confirm or deny.

I won't name my source either. Nor will I even confirm if it is a 'reliable' source.

By the by, interesting thread given it is the first post by the op since May 2017. Curious.

I can appreciate it looks that way, but I haven’t been as disheartened as a member since the Kardinia massacre when they sacked Bailey. I waited years on the waiting list for a reserved seat as a premium member, and I’m seriously thinking of giving it away because there is only so long you can stick with a club that can’t get it’s [censored] together. I neither new of or cared about Pert until Caroline Wilson commented about him coming to us. The way the AFL forced his appointment against the wishes of what was a unified and high functioning football club wasn’t right with me.

We seem to be obsessed with the blame game as if one single person is is responsible for all of our woes!

So far, we have identified Taylor, Misson, Chaplin, Jones, Pert, Hogan, May, etc.

I thought Melbourne supporters were smarter than that.

Not being able to train because of surgeries, to me, is the biggest factor in our poor form. One that most informed Demonland posters were worried about in February/March.

DT - You forgot Garland, Watts, Toumpas and Tyson ?

Oh boy... if your opinion could be classified as 'news' this would be the definition of 'fake' news'.

This is categorically false.

Actually, the more relevant question is your (and a few others) motivation to seek to shut the discussion down.

I can’t for the life of me imagine how he would have any impact whatsoever on our onfield performance.

With that said, Collingwood played finals 7 of his 11 years at the helm, winning 1 premiership and coming runner-up once.  If he does have an impact, sounds like a pretty good one.

The CEO drives the club ... he answers to the board and would liaise with the Chairman/President  but the Admin,  FD and various other areas are ultimately his responsibilty.

Obviously Pert can't go out and kick goals for the team but again,  the buck stops with the CEO.

So if any areas aren't performing he can step in and make decisions ... albeit with the backing of the board.

A good example is Peter Jackson ... he came in and made a lot of changes,  got rid of a lot of people (Neeld,  assistant coaches et al) as well as continuing our NT connection,  Pokies etc.

Another example is Cameron Schwab who copped the blame for just about everything (some would say rightfully so)

But all CEO's at footy clubs tend to play the same role.  So if the footy club turns to complete shitt,  the spotlight will well and truly go to Pert to fix things.  He'd be feeling the pressure right now I'd imagine.  Pride plays a factor too.

But let's not point the finger at any particular individual for our current plight ... we need a big lift right across the board.  Players,  FD included.

Again this a really, really big call.

You write as if it is fact not supposition.

What is your evidence (supposition from Caroline Wilson or another journo, or scuttlebut from inside the club isn't evidence by the way)?

Like you i feel terrible about where we are at ATM, as all true fans are. I do wonder how helpful right now it is for dees fans to be debating if we got the right guy and used the right process and repeating rumour an innuendo from journos. Even less helpful to be stating things as inflammatory sa the notion that the AFL controlled pert's appointment not the MFC board as fact not supposition. Hence my cynicism about your motives.

But i have been watching Counterpoint so perhaps i'm wired to look for conspiracies.

Well the purple scrap is not always correct.

This better not become a major fire ? if in fact it is smoking at all. I will not put up with more infighting.

It is “put up or Shut up time”

i want action on the field and nowhere else.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
