Reserve matches to be played before the main game feels like bit of an antidote to AFLX

Seems like most games will finish an hour before the Dees game so you'll need to get there early to even catch the tail end or even miss the end watching on TV when you have to leave to get to the G.

don't get too excited...

around 60 games per year on the MCG and they are offering 4 VFL games

"An agreement, in principle, struck on Monday between the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) and AFL sees four VFL fixtures set for the MCG prior to AFL matches next year.

In a boost for fans, it will also result in the AFL reducing the time between the end of a curtain-raiser and the start of an AFL matches from around 60 minutes to a minimum of 35-45 minutes."

And why is it happening:

AFL.com.au understands the move was originally raised by Channel Seven in a cost-saving strategy to create a VFL-AFL double header prior to their broadcast Sunday 3.20pm AFL game.

...and about phriggin time, too...well overdue...absolute necessity...let's hope it is more inclusive of teams and matches than just a restricted offering...week by week analysis and A FULL DAY AT THE FOOTY!

I used to love going to the footy as a kid and catching the end of the Ressies match. I'd hear all the die hards around me who had seen most or all of the match retell how so and so had played a blinder and was a shoe in for next week.

When I started going to thre footy you could watch the U19’s, Reserves then the Seniors. From memory  Robbie Flower went through all 3 in the one season by May. and never left the Seniors.

Not very exciting for us if it’s only Sunday 3:20 games. We only have one 3:20 Sunday game in Melbourne next season and it’s at Marvel.

And that storytelling was very important between follow supporters of any team persuasion...   it helped fans connect with one another.

A really Aussie way of attending the Footy.

bring it on.

Now everyone one just sits in their seats and stares at their phones. I'm guilty as charged.

The article mentions it also happening at Marvel with the Bulldogs likely to be involved so it's possible that we'll at least get to see Casey play then.

I can't say I'd ever watched a full game of reserves footy, but always appreciated getting there from around half time of the ressies onwards for the reasons raised above.  It was much easier to casually watch and observe the individual performance of players, in a relaxed way, without getting too worked up about the scores/result.  Good to see the young kids developing, how players comming back from injury/poor form were looking for the next week, or to hang it on an out of form nemesis from the opposition who'd been dropped.

Let’s hope so. It would be good to at least watch Casey once before the main game. I remember enjoying the reserves games as a kid even it was the last half or quarter.

I think kids will enjoy the curtain raiser as well, some families like to go early to games and I know in the last 2-3 years we’ve had a few women’s exhibition games along with a couple of U18s matches and my kids have taken notice and actually enjoyed them. It’s definitely better than wasting battery life on our phones like you touched on earlier.

The Casey Fixture came out today and Casey are playing the Bulldogs on the same day as our game against the Bulldogs with the venue as TBC @ 11:40am.

Round 15: Sunday July 14, Footscray, Away @ TBC, 11:40am

It's a safe bet that this will be a curtain raiser to our game at Marvel Stadium.

The other thing it does is make you appreciate the quantum leap in standard to the Firsts and just how good they are. A bit of perspective can be a good thing.

I remember running out onto the" G" in a reserves match against  Collingwood  after the game in 1969 chasing autographs and came across no. 4 Tony Sullivan who gave me his signature and felt chuffed about it. Only to find that he signed it   Fred Bear. I wasn't impressed to say the least.  Loved the Reserves game.

Just had to be a catch of some description, given the influence of TV rights over the AFL seniors and tendencies for kickbacks.

Hopefully Ch 7 and the AFL are testing the waters and if successful we'll get more.

Depends, really, on the measured criteria of 'successful' and to whom that is relevant. Certainly, the public and supporters will be the last consideration.

as mentioned it's a money saving exercise by seven.

Interesting thing was that the televised VFL match was on Saturday and these are being televised on Sunday.

I assume no Saturday televised VFL on the weekends of the Sunday game.

VFL games call out for streaming... a few fixed cameras and some IT ... commentary optional... would be a very cheap product.

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
