You don't hear many (if any) premiership sides say "we had a poor preseason that was interrupted by injuries and off season surgeries".

That is why I won't be livid if we miss the finals. Our preparation has been seriously compromised and I can't see how it won't cost us.

Now, I think I see ?

Why May started off playing the Lever role as intercept role,  and why we went in with all 3 tall defenders

I think we  'May'  have gambled, and lost.

Could it be, that we brought him back in a weak or so early,  because of Hawkins ?

... and then go in one running player, short on.?  Mayb a case of whowoz available ?

A better question is:

a) he initially went off complaining of what was obviously this issue.

b) Why did he go back on?

He will miss more than this week.

I think we went in with 3 tall defenders because the coaches have no faith in our ability for OMc or Frost to handle Hawkins, and others they might throw at us.

I suspect they played May a bit too early, for this reason.  Hoping it would pay off and he would get thru OK.

He was just coming back from the groin injury.

They might have thought we are up against IT,  with the Cats, as it was... visa injuries and fitness to our senior players....   and that after the Cats game, then things get a tad easier,  for a few weeks.

This might have led to them playing May, instead of giving him and extra week.  same could be said of KK.  Either way we went in underdone, with a host of players...  and many ran themselves into some match fitness,  at the least.

Some looked much better,  than they were the preceding match.

Just watched On the Couch, and Tommy Morris said that May came back “unfit” at the start of the pre-season and finished last in the time trials. I had heard he had a habit of doing that at the GC but didn’t realise it happened again with us. Was this mentioned on DL late last year/early this year?

There was talk that he didn't come back in suitable condition. I think even May has admitted this on record also.

IIRC there's a quote from May where he talks about our training standards being much higher than GC's.

Edit: this is what I was thinking of, I think. https://wwos.nine.com.au/afl/hamstring-setback-for-new-demon-may/6d95c2aa-3659-4ee1-b1b9-9f8868c26544

He doesn't say it but I think it's implied.

So far it’s not been a good start for May. At 27 he doesn’t have a decade of chances ahead of him. I understand that injuries can’t be helped, but keeping himself in top condition over pre season and not getting suspended for silly stuff is within his control.

Very disappointing.

unfortunately, like eddie mcguire with his disparaging comments of anyone and everyone he deems 'below' him, may is a recidivist when it comes to a) not being fit and b) getting suspended

he's too small (height-wise) for modern forwards, many of who are lightning quick 200cm+ athletic freaks

may is no better / no worse than chip frawley

... well, thank goodness we have a young 'Tom' petty coming through then.

do we have to remove him from the mast-head, already.

If that’s the case what was the point of getting him? And giving up so much in the process! I can see this turning to [censored] very quickly

It turns bad quickly based off one poster's opinions on a bloke who has been at the club for six months?  Really?

Well right now I would rather still have Hogan or a top round draftee. I hope it turns out with May, but turning up to pre-season in sub standard knick, getting suspended for stupidity, and now soft tissue injuries (which could be attributed to his condition pre-season) doesn’t exactly instil me with a lot of confidence

Like us being at 0-2, I'll wait for a larger sample size before I write off this trade.  We need to give some of these things a little more patience.

And I'd rather still have hair on the top of my head. There's not much use in wanting something that couldn't be kept.

On Joel Smith:

“Joel’s still settling down. He’s been progressing pretty well, but he hasn’t started running yet. We’ll probably give him another week or so before he does that, then he’ll need probably two to three weeks at least to reload, but again, his rehab plans and return to play plans are still a bit up in the air.”

So assuming no further set backs that looks like a minimum of four weeks before he is even ready to resume full training. So say another 2-3 weeks of training and then you'd think he's come back via the VFL. Best case scenario is he's available for the seniors in rounds 10-11. That's with everything going well. Any hiccups and we may not see him until rounds 12-13 or later.  Great. Just great.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the scorching morning heat to bring you the following observations of Wednesday's preseason training session from Gosch's Paddock. HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
