Best backline in the comp? Must be close to it at the very least ...

Tigers and West Coast are by far the best 2 off the top of my head in my opinion.

Preuss to the bench. Gawn starts ruck.

Great crystal ball imo for draft.   Real depth added.

Adds to the pace and height in some positions we need but also grabbing super talented kids.

Perhaps Fraser Turner instead of McKenzie at #28 but Mckenzie would be very good pickup nonetheless.

We were a much better side late in the season when Frost came back in.

Have been re-watching some of our games again lately and the rundown tackles, big marks, spoils and run out of defense Frosty gave us were awsome.  He really provided some drive at a time Oscar was fading a bit.

With some of the dash and precision forward passing that Frosty executed late season, not only Oscar, but Hunt should also be worried about their spots in the side.

Great to have such depth and options back there.

Below is what Melbourne’s best 22 looks like pre-draft:

FB: Neville Jetta, Steven May, Jake Lever
HB: Christian Salem, Oscar McDonald, Michael Hibberd
C : Nathan Jones, Clayton Oliver, James Harmes
HF: Christian Petracca, Sam Weideman, Bayley Fritsch
FF: Jake Melksham, Tom McDonald, Mitch Hannan
Fol: Max Gawn, Angus Brayshaw, Jack Viney
Int: Jordan Lewis, Charlie Spargo, Alex Neal-Bullen, Kade Kolodjashnij

Draft picks: 23, 28, 54, 62, 91

Who could they target?

Bailey Williams is an athletic forward who would no doubt be on Melbourne’s radar.

The 198cm Dandenong Stingrays big man is capable of assisting in the ruck but is better viewed as a long-term key forward prospect who could be taken at 23 or 28.

With pace and agility around the flanks a need, the Demons could look at a player in the mould of Sam Sturt.

William’s Stingrays teammate is a half-forward who tested high in the running vertical jump as well as sprint and agility tests at the Draft Combine and could be developed over the next few years, provided he is still available at 23.

The Demons are expected to bid for NextGen academy prospect Toby Bedford (another Stingray) with his pace, forward pressure and tackling ability his standout qualities.

Medium-sized forward Curtis Taylor, from the Calder Cannons, may also be in the sights of the Dees with his overhead marking ability, doubled with his capacity to move into the midfield, both attractive attributes.

Alternatively, Tasmanian outside runner Fraser Turner could also be an option for the Demons.

At least this mob have Fritsch in, but I recon Vanders is definitely best 22 material, probably ahead of Hannan and/or Kolodjashnij on form at this point.  Love the bash and crash that Vanders brings and I don't think we could have too much of that (just think of those powerful Lions sides in the early 2000s).

You'd certainly like to think that Kolodjashnij, Hunt or Frost would have Lewis's spot by the end of the season though.  Not a slight on Lewis as I thought he was very good last year, but you'd hope any of those young guys could drive themselves to force Lewis out of the side through hard work, their respective athletic ability and maturing as footballers.  There is also a sense that Lewis would have failed his role as a mentor if we can't stand on our own without the experience he brings.

Will be a fascinating season for the MFC.  Just hope we don't get any crippling injuries.  A few years like Richmond had injury wise would be great.

    TRAINING: Friday 28th February 2025

A couple of Demonland Trackwatchers headed down to Gosch's Paddock to bring you their observations from today's training session before the Demons head off to Perth for their final Practice Match. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Beautiful morning, not much wind, more than a couple of dozen spectators.  The players were up and about, boisterous and having fun. THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
