So much confidence in Weed..... I just hope he lives up to it because so far he has just shown a glimmer.

Steve... you're taking things at face value.

A noted author wrote once:

"Contradictions don't exist. Whenever you think you're facing a contradiction, check your premises. You will find one of them to be wrong"

This is no different. Logic suggests not everything, if anything , is as it's suggested.

But then again, if we get 11 for Hogan (plus dreggs) and GCS accept that for May then does it actually even matter we didn't get 5, 6 or otherwise?

In my view no but not sure there will be many who agree.

GC won't cop pick 11 for Steven May, nor should they.

Pick 5 is a good result for all parties. Get it done!

If May is worth pick 5, then we should be getting picks 5&6 from Freo. It's all relative, Davos

I think some of the posters with all that confidence might be on the Weed literally :)

And the value of good backman?

Defenders are going to get munched by decent forwards no matter how good they are under these rules it's all about centre clearances

Sorry don't believe that , Defenders will need to be better so IMO the value of good ones rises as well. The value of May just went up.

Anything happens to one or both Max or Preuss ( should we get him) would need to cover them and kick goals.

Have to say not overly excited by the prospect.

They are in for hell with no support....none of these guys are used to defending 1-1. Its like being a bowler in 20-20, cannon fodder

I think it may increase the value of smaller mobile strong marking forwards of which we have a few - perhaps this is the reason we are prepared to entertain JH leaving for fair compensation

Although not a massive fan of May one thing he does have is leg speed for his size which is a positive - not sure if his ability to read the play and reaction time is as good but assume our FD know best

Hogan 1v1 is a monster...he destroyed Rance in his debut season part of the reason he gets so frustrated now is he's double and triple teamed most of the time. Under these new rules he'll be a dominant force in the AFL if we trade him, insanity.

Rance has always been suspect one on one. Even Mason Cox touched him up

Of course it matters.

We would be the laughing stock of trade week if we accepted that. Mahoney would lose all credibility given is tough public stance and the Demons would forever be known as a post-season soft touch.

We are just waiting on the Neale situation to resolve itself and they will hand over pick 5 to us, plus 11 or whatever the sweetener is. It’s pretty straightforward.

If the Neale deal doesn’t go through the only other possibility for Freo to acquire Hogan is pick 11 plus Freo’s 2019 first rounder. I’d say that is their “Plan B” or close to it.

The Demons don’t need to do much here except wait, but if things look like dragging out into next week (very possible) we’re going to have to issue Peter Bell a deadline. We can’t afford to be waiting until 15 minutes to go on the final day to stitch up our other deals.

The Dees have got this negotiation well sorted, gift wrapped and in the bag. Some won’t like the outcome but for mine Steven May and a decent first round draft pick is fair trade for a wantaway key forward with questionable work ethic, who frankly has yet to genuinely prove he can be a match winner on the big stage.

The MFC is going to come out of this trade in a stronger position than when it went in. That’s all that matters here.

As I have said  every year that i have posted on DL at this time of year i have little interest in the machinations of the draft, particularly the byzantine swapping of picks of horse trading. Pre - Jackson i worried about our acumen when trading (and drafting for that matter), but i have complete faith now.

Don't get me wrong i understand why people enjoy discussing the permutations and all power to them. I do however get frustrated by:

  • the frequent nashing of teeth over fears of being ripped off
  • criticisms of MFC not playing 'hard ball' often enough
  • bemoaning the picks we are asking for (we want 16 first rounders!)
  • claims we are always paying 'overs'
  • over wrought concerns about how much coin we are paying (or length of contracts)

Go back and look at some of the discussion around bringing melk to the club for examples of all of the above.

A couple of weeks ago i posted the above (part of a longer post).  So many examples in this thread of those issues it is impossible to count them.

Don't get me wrong i'm not having shot at anyone. Go for it. I get that getting frustrated with such things is my issue. To avoid frustration i scan through looking for the odd nugget of good intel, analysis, opinion or witticism.

What i should have suggested in the above post was a game of Bend Over Bingo.

The rules are simple.

One has to scull whatever is at hand, be that water, scotch or white out, when you read a post where the phrase bend over - or any similar homo erotic term - is used to describe what we should do to other clubs or fear will be done to us.

Hmm with the change of rules and the constant push for gender equality we might be onto something here :)

Bloody Fremantle...

"DAYNE Beams will play at Brisbane next year, according to the club.

The Lions today rubbished a potential trade of Beams to Collingwood.

It is understood speculation can be traced back to Fremantle, which is in trade talks with the Lions over ball magnet Lachie Neale."

We'll get 2 first round picks for Hogan. That would be about right in my view.

May is worth pick 5 to us, at this point in the side's development. You draft kids with high picks in the hope they will get you to this point, high picks are of less value now we are here. Players that fill immediate weak points in our team are worth more than just about any draft pick.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
