Precard 10 Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 He seemed ok yesterday. He’d want to be a lot better than the St Kilda game. Quote

Have never trusted comments like this since Cale Morton was supposed to be a steal at pick 4 because "some people" rated him the best player in the draft. 2 Quote

Apart from Nev, I don't think we have one. Oscar is improving but does not seem to have that intensity or desperation. At times, he appears strangely detached. Petty is similar. Like Oscar he is a young guy that will continue to improve but he is not a tough nut that's going to put the fear of god into his opponent. In short, I would like to see us acquire another defender who brings that hard nosed belligerent attitude to our back half. Anyone in particular? 2 hours ago, Demons11 said: May coming in should help I have heard on the grapevine that May can be a bit of a lazy bugger. Quote

Wasn't he this year's hope? Gee the kid is a raw 18 year old. What was your take on Harmes a few years ago when he was a rookie? I remember people writing him off as having no kicking skills, no footy IQ, no speed yet he kept getting the odd game and kicking a goal or two, then get dropped but then get another chance in amongst getting elevated to the main list. He kept at it and is now a major part of our midfield. At the moment Petty is raw talent, he could be anything if he works hard enough at it and has a fair slice of luck, e.g. with injuries and how the team travels, that is it is much easier to be a champion defender in a great side, than a bottom side. 3 Quote
Tony Tea 2,816 Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 Goodwin would not have played Petty if he did not see a future in Petty. Quote

Dr.D 1,771 Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 his debut was one of the worst in modern history. so until he plays well at afl level then i am not too excited Quote
Demon Disciple 12,537 Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 Petty was given his debut wayyyyyy too soon, so much so that it probably damaged some of his development he gained through the VFL. IMO it was very poor coaching by Goodwin and co to select him when they did. He is only a kid, a KPP at that. They tend to develop a lot slower than mids, so i'd have him play the majority of next year with Casey (maybe have him play in the JLT to further his understanding of just what level he needs to get to). I'd only bring him in to the team again when he is banging the door down at Casey (and not just because he is sticking to his structures well). Quote
buck_nekkid 6,103 Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 They probably thought it was worth the risk to promote him early: The St Kilda Game should have not been the farce that it ended up being, Petty should have had a ‘taste’ of the AFL and gone back with that in mind to help his progression. Instead, the midfield leaked so he had more pressure than he should have had, and fluffed it badly. The missed kick from half back will unfortunately be remembered for a long time. But in the end, the team choked on that game, and Petty got shown up. Lots see if he can develop at Casey and have another crack in 2019 Quote
DeeSpencer 26,691 Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 Petty's debut was more of a failure from the entire side than from him. Near impossible to play as an intercepting CHB when the rest of the side couldn't defend anywhere on the ground. He dropped a few marks he got his hands on, that's nerves, then was beaten for pace and tired out. We just have high standards for debuts after not having many young talls thrown in of late. The Weid got a couple of easy goals on debut but otherwise did nothing. Hogan was ready to play. Frosty, Max and Tom debut years ago. Joel Smith busted his shoulder on debut. Oscar was pretty trash on debut. And Petty really wasn't much different to Jake Lever's debut for us! After a good preseason or two and picked in a game where the rest of the side do their job I could see Petty playing an excellent 2nd AFL game. 1 Quote
