Interesting that we are mentioned on the MCC site but the MCC are not mentioned on the MFC site. We are a sporting section of the MCC, I think we are still tenants. I note that the baseball section is older than the football.

Edit; I cannot find mention of the relationship in either clubs Reports other than a MFC acknowledgment of support from the MCC? The MFC report says it is financially dependent on the AFL. What is the legal relationship between MCC & MFC?

Never realised those Kulin clans built the G.

I suspect the MCC is the original owner of the G ;)

I suspect its the peoples land... the peoples ground... built with the peoples money.   All others are squatters including the Mcc. Only sanctioned by their own bretheren in spring street.

And the original people were the Kulin Clans.

I don't care for some of the technicalities in this thread....don't take it too seriously people but you've got to stake your claim.

It's our ground...the others can F....off back to Glenferrie Oval, Punt Rd & Victoria Park if they don't like it.

...and don't even think about it Carlton or EFC.

As you invite the history lesson I'll oblige.

Irrespective of the land the OP clearly refers to the sporting ground, the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

It didn't exist before it was built. A moot and silly point to some but it clearly gives context.

It's built upon land granted to the club (the MCC ) . It's stadia , original and up til the Olympics make over was down to the Club (MCC )  Recent times have seen ownership wander around and ultimately back as public property but under the caretaking of the MCG trust.

As to who's ground it originally was...As in whose facility ? The MCC. We were as the MFC part of the MCC. We ran away as it were....but came home.

It's never really been the people's ground. Its just the BEST one ;)

Sorry Ron we are but a tenant. It is the MCG not the MFG, cricket was first played on the G, rumour has it that football was devised as a method to keep the cricketers fit during winter. So if your primary premise is flawed it does not help your argument. But we were the first football tenants.

The MFC is a sporting section of the MCC so it is one and the same.

We split from the MCC in 1981 and incorporated as our own entity. This was due to the FC constantly having to rely on the MCC to sign off on releasing funds to sign players etc. We rejoined as a sporting section of the MCC in 2008/09 under Stynes/McLardy but still exist as an independent entity for financial reasons.

That's my understanding, someone else may be able to confirm.

The truth is, there is no such thing as an owner of land... because simply, the land owns us, as long as we are a physical body of matter.

We need the land, the land does not need us humans.

The ground is Crown land and the MCC are responsible for its maintenance with the state government looking over the MCC’s shoulder.

When I started supporting the Demons, it was always the MCC Football Club!

I understand that...that's why it's called Real Estate...from the Spanish..Royal Land.

Nature's owns everything. But we have convention.

as to the rest...yep...you go with that.

In those days there was a massive banner affixed to the exterior edge of the ‘outer’ stand , now called the Southern Stand , and in the vivid colours of red and navy blue it read:

FOREVER FORWARD DASHING DEMONS , THE GREATEST EVER EXPONENTS OF PERFECTION FOOTBALL.

Then,  from recollection ,there were some words about how the MCG was ours❤️

It was a huge and imposing banner that adorned OUR ground and we were proud and unforgiving landlords?

Also, "MELBOURNE, MASTERS OF THE MCG".

Thanks DG - exactly.

This was intended to be a light hearted thread. As a 20 year plus member of the MCC, I kind of get the bleeding obvious, even though some here feel the need to point it out.

It’s like trying to explain Monty Python to a 93 year old Ukrainian - they just don’t get it.

That's my understanding as well. I've a vague recollection of an interview on World of Sport with Wayne Read, the MFC president of the day outlining the reasons for the split

How the hell did the government sell us shares in Telstra then when we already owned it?

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
