There is a scene from Team America: World Police set in an alleyway that comes to mind...

lucky they didn't kick straight .....

PS... was wondering why it was played so early in September but of course that was the year of the Sydney Olympics

18 years ago troy Simmons was knocked out in what would get you 16 weeks now and brad green sent to hospital because he couldnt breathe.

The same club then embroiled the entire afl in controversy by instigating a systematic doping regime and flatly denying it.

Absolute scum

Things will have changed for mine if another club tries to snipe us in a GF and we go all Hawthorn on them.

I would prefer it didn't come to that and I don't glorify it. But teams push the line on what they can get away with and they need to be shown where the line is.

Geez thanks for starting this thread. I lined up at 1am to get into the MCC

That was the only highlight

I just remember getting a huge migraine after the game.

One thing I don't want to hear this year: they are still young. Their time will come.

I thought that back then but with time and age, I realize that is a crock.

Take advantage of your chances while you have them.

It doesn't mean tear the club apart because we didn't win the flag. But it needs to be recognized as what it is if we do: an opportunity lost.

It was dreadful but 30 years ago was even worse.

I was at both GFs - 1988 and 2000.

Equally dreadful.

Don’t forget the salary-cap cheating.

Yay! Cast them all in bronze!

Me too. And then I felt absolutely shouse the next day even before the game started.

Yes Simmo was kneed in the throat by Michael Long whose defence was that "he sees things differently".

Hard to comment on these days but the penalty he received was only 4 weeks and were counted into the pre-match series the following year.

So, he got away with it.

Him serving it in the preseason was the biggest disgrace of all, it was what ended up changing the rule. They were dominant that year but that day they were thugs and bullies against youngsters.

As soon as Neitz hit the post on the first shot on goal I knew it was going to be a dirty day.

My thoughts exactly, I thought we were going back to the grand final for at least the next 3 years after that when finally after the monstrosity of 2003 I finally realised the moment had passed.

I to was at this game. Unfortunately we came up against  a team that was booted out of the prelim the year before and wanted revenge. Lets face it this essendon team under achieved with this team they had. They should have at least won 2 flags. Which is why I laughed when brisbane beat them the year after and still laugh in 99 because there supporters are still so filthy about losing that one to carlton.

But I went to that game probably thinking we wouldn't win. Look at the teams and im sorry but we were young against the other mob. It wasn't a bad team but Beams Grgic and matthew collins probably wern't going to get us a flag.

It was a shame Cameron Bruce got injured that week. But yes it would have been nice if Neita hit that first shot. Also hadn't farmer been carrying an injury to? I remember his jumper being pulled off and him wearing  a protected vest thing underneath.

But it didn't help when our strongest player the ox was thinking about the evenings entertainment that night and the gambling he could do at crown. Im sure I read a quote like that in his book. So his mind wasn't there and he didn't kick a goal that day.

Anyway im glad the scum haven't won a grand final since. What they have done is wrecked the competition for 3 years, there golden boy couldn't coach and they have a missed the finals for a few years. But the 1 thing has stayed the same. There supporters are still arrogant and a pain.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

  • POSTGAME: Port Adelaide

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
