Yes, but he is likely going to leave for more opportunity.

FYI

Barlow suffered Bell's palsy at the start of the year, and then came into the NEAFL for 8 weeks were he averaged over 40 touches, then came into the AFL side and got 35 against geelong were they lost by 100.

It might not be the right option, but i feel like most people here aren't being objective, but rather going off their pre-concieved notion that he is washed up.

I think he would be more value for a 1 year contract compared to a draftee pick 70-80.

De Boer, sounds like my mates 15 years ago, when I was trying to score at the local nightclub...

Dom Tyson

2018 Avg:

20 disposals, 0.12 goals, 2.76 tackles, 3.82 marks - playing on the wing

Michael Barlow- playing on the wing

2018 avg:

Our list is so young, i think we could benefit from bringing in 1 veteran to compliment 3-5 draftees.

If we were looking to go down that path I think we would have kept Bernie on the list 'Lord'...

Our list will have a different look at the end of this trade period and at present I don't see a role for Barlow with us.

You would have thought GCS the ideal club for him.

Ridiculous he didn't play more for Gold Coast this year. Why get him and not play him when you're getting thumped like they were.

But for us? Maybe Casey could sign him.

We are probably the worst of all clubs for Barlow.

Essendon and GWS more suitable.

Think it is likely that he will be overlooked.

Barlow can find the footy and would not be a stupid choice on a one year deal.. I have always liked him as a player. Had a major falling out with Dew at the GC.

Mayne was one of Collingwoods best on GF day. Bit of redemption for the [censored] he'd got from afl world.

Difference is he was signed as a free agent on a four year deal. He was never delisted by Freo and Freo weren't as diabolical as the Suns are.

Plus we should be recruiting for need and not doing the 'scattergun' of 2013. What need does Barlow fill?

Not playing at bad team automatically means you're no good? How simplistic. clubs make mistakes all the time in preferencing too much youth or too much age with decent players getting squeezed out. Look above for reasons. Great clubman, ready to go player that adds depth (more ready than a late pick). We're in the window to add little pieces that give us some options to play with. Comes far cheaper than mayne.

In the event of our club using cap space on two elite recruits and losing players to other clubs, we may need one or two patchwork players on 2 year contracts. If barlow dominates at casey then he's in with or ahead of hunt, jkh, wagner, stretch in getting an opportunity in seniors isnt he?

Depth, we are losing Kent and possibly AVB and Tyson. Barlow is a proven player that will take up minimal cap space. He's fills the gap when we are down a midfielder or 3.

I'm not saying get him 100%, but its an option that carries 0 risk, we would be choosing him over a 6th round 18 year old.. and only for 1 year

Agreed, but we don't even need to offer him 2 years, we can offer him 1.

As far as I can tell, we need three things: outside pace, linking players and strength in the backline. He offers none of these things.

The time for importing leaders from other clubs because ours are so diabolical is over. While we aren't Sydney or Hawthorn on that front, we aren't putting 20 year old kid up as captain either.

Your comparison of Mayne and Barlow is apples and oranges. Mayne was tempted away from Freo while Barlow has been moved on. Mayne was also 27 when Collingwood poached him. Barlow is 30 when Gold Coast delisted him. What could we reasonably get out of him besides leadership that could be developed in house organically anyway with what we have?

You put forward a good case but it’s a no from me. I was a fan and really want him to continue but it won’t be at us.

Carlton is probably his only chance. Maybe freo if they lose Neale

Again, im actually not trying to convince people to get Barlow, its reasonable to not want him..

But you arguing that he doesn't compliment our 22, which is not the point.

I see him playing in big games if Jones (over 30) and Viney (injury prone) go down, on top of Kent, AVB and Tyson leaving; We are in the grand final window and we need a really solid top 28-30 players, our best back-up inside mid at this point will be Maynard..

This is why I’d like to keep Tyson. You’re right. If he goes, as appears more likely than not, along with Vanders whose exit appears even more likely, our inside mid depth suddenly starts to look very questionable for a premiership challenging side.

Barlow’s last game for the Suns on face value showed he still could provide value to a squad. Suns fans on Bigfooty (yes, they do exist) are adamant that he wasn’t treated well by the club.

Whether he’s the right option for us is another matter, but as to whether he could he still compete at AFL level, I would say yes. It’s a worthy thread.

I think we two mature aged players, from state leagues or other clubs, to fill in those back-up mid roles. I like Barlow, but there may be better options, especially in the state leagues.. another Tim Kelly would be nice

Agreed although as I understand it Carlton and GC get first dibs on those players now.

I'll put my hand up here, I thought he was one of the worst recruits ever but was a valuable contributor for Collingwood all year.

Worst part about the Mayne deal was that they paid him 400k+, we would pay barlow 100k.

Barlow can only play 1 position on the ground - inside mid.

We currently have: Oliver, Viney, Brayshaw, Harmes, Jones, Tyson, Vanders, Maynard and Petracca who can do that. 9 guys for 4 spots. 2 might be about to leave which would still have us at 7 guys for 4 spots.

If we lose Vanders and Tyson without getting a midfielder with some inside ability back then we probably look for a ready made replacement but I'd take Corey Wagner or some other state league player who can play some different roles as well and has some upside. Even just drafting an 18 year old midfielder in the 2nd or 3rd round you can potentially get some games out of them in a depth role as early as year 1 and if not then by year 2 when Jones is either moved on or can't be considered a midfield chance.

We should be looking for a dominant VFL midfielder to sign for Casey so they have a respectable captain and week to week presence in the side. Casey needs that, Melbourne don't.

         Best 22                                                   Depth
Jetta Frost Hibbard                      Tall Defenders: King (6), Omac,
Kolo Lever Salem                 Medium Defenders: Hunt, J.Smith, Wagner, Petty

 Gawn Oliver Harmes                                     Ruck: Preuss
Gus   Viney   Fritsch                          Inside Mids: Barlow, Maynard
Outside Mids: B.Smith (5), Stretch, Baker, JKH
Trac  Weed Vanders                               Tall Fwd: T.Smith
ANB Tmac Melksham                        Small Fwd: Garlett

B: Jones, Lewis, Spargo, Hannan.

This is my best 22 and depth, assuming we get Barlow and Kolo, and keep Vanders. (Also assuming we don't get May and go to the draft with pick 5 &6)

If we lose Vanders, and don't get a mature inside mid then we are relying on Maynard to fill any injuries. No disrespect to the kid, but he hasn't shown much at AFL level yet.

Re Petracca: i think he needs to be a forward now that Hogan is going, he adds a third marking option and some x-factor to our forward line.

If not Barlow i think we still need some strong mids playing in our VFL that could come in if needed.

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
