We should host Anzac Eve one year, queen's bday the next. We should also get to host Essendon and Carlton every second year at minimum too instead of once a decade. Fix these and i have no issue, it may actually help build the day as Collingwood supporters will be more invested in making it a big game rather than seeing it as charity.

We know the advantages Collingwood get out of it (reserved seating in Ponsford for example) but that shouldn't preclude us sharing the game.

    Correct, he has overdone the bleeding heart routine - poor Collingwood - with the AFL and with the public to extract unfair advantages over many years; his media links have inflated his ego beyond his capabilities and still he presses onward with tasteless advantage-seeking. He would argue and so would the Collingwood FC that he, as President, is doing all in his power for the benefit of the Club, however, when taking a good deal from his media profile to enable this 'caring steerage', he  and the Collingwood FC are giving little back to the AFL and idts representation on behalf of all other clubs in the League, let alone the non-Collingwood supporting general public across Australia.

    As already said, alternate from 2020, playing Collingwood twice and a home game v Essendon and/or Carlton each year.

    I am not against supporters of other teams posting here, I thought Ash? the Essendon supporter was good, he took a lot of shlt from us but he had reasoned arguments and I respected him. However this latest incarnation Davydee is just stirring the pot and adds nothing to the site. I have no doubt he will pop up under another guise before too long. Hopefully we can get rid of him more quickly next time.

    Interesting topic.

    I for one am glad the AFL is in charge of scheduling. 

    I consider Collingwood may be very lucky for instance ,to have ANZAC day.

    They simply didn’t have that many players go to war in comparison to the other clubs. ( Melbourne I believe had the highest participation). But that in itself, may be a totally different discussion?

    Happy to leave to the AFL to sort out and also agree with PJ’s comments and stance.

    Another game v Collingwood each year wouldn’t hurt either, we are arch rivals and have a history, why not chuck the second game in a Friday night and alternate QB each year, leaving us with one H and one A  v Pies?

    MCC predicting 79,000 next Monday which would make it a record for a QB clash. We’d love it if we can get 80k+.

    Great point.

    I'd rather play Collingwood x 2, despite the risk of losing, than the Bulldogs (what is it, 3 weeks apart LOL) or the Saints or Suns

    I just checked Mt Buller and it's looking sad.

    The forecast doesn't look good so whaddaya know we may see a Deluge of Discoveries parked up around the precinct and a Bevy of Boat Shoes at the Royal pre game.

It is first and foremost our traditional home and all other Clubs are there at the behest of the MCC administration. Eddie can go and suck eggs or we can offer him a home game at Alice or Darwin!     I don't quite agree with this.  All clubs are asked for their wishlist and input re the next season's fixture.

    The AFL wouldn't have a blockbuster where one team year after year is the home team and pockets the funds without the largesse of the other club involved.  We wouldn't have had this fixture as long as we have without Collingwood's agreement.

    I don't think it matters much what Eddie wants. The longterm prospect for a public holiday on the second Monday in June isn't promising,  whether we become a republic or not. Her Majesty is 92. When she passes it is my view that the Queen's Birthday holiday, rather than becoming a King's Birthday holiday, will be replaced with some other public holiday which is more relevant to Australia. It may fall in winter, but it could equally be any other time of the year. 

    We should worry less about who hosts Queen's Birthday football and instead develop alternative blockbuster formats. I've said it before, so I'll repeat it here: To me the obvious blockbuster opportunity is the Capital City Clash between Melbourne and Sydney. The two biggest cities which host between them the HQs of the bulk of corporate Australia should, with the right promotion, be able to generate big crowds and big sponsorship opportunities for both Melbourne FC and Sydney FC. Alternating between the MCG and the SCG each year and played as a Friday night game. Get the State premiers involved, the respective Lord Mayors and various other Melbourne and Sydney-based bodies.

    When I first read this I was annoyed by a few things. Ed as usual taking his argument public rather than negotiating with MFC in private. Yes I appreciate MFC getting the home game and the finances for the last 20 years but looking back early on the crowds weren't there and the fixture was in doubt because Collingwood supporters didn't attend our home game. It is Ed's sense of entitlement that annoys me.

    Now it is a genuine blockbuster Eddy wants in on the cash. In a fair deal moving forward I have no problem sharing the gate in the future and expect we play each other twice. Given that the ANZAC eve game is our other blockbuster the home game for us should coincide with us being away aginst Richmond. Will Ed be prepared to give up another of his MCG blockbuster games or does he want another MCG game. We have been at the G our home once in the last 6 weeks and that was as the away team. If he wants to negotiate what is he prepared to give up.

    My perception is that he doesn't think the MND game will go beyond this year. He has stated that he is happy to let us have this year but is he imlpying it wont happen next year and I thought the AFL managed the fixture. If they get the home game on Queens birthday then I expect MFC to take the MND game to another game as we have owned it and marketed it and pay homage to one of our favourite sons.

    I know emotion rarely motivates the players but I really hope Viney is reminding everybody of what Collingwood did in the last game last season and makes sure it never happens again. Give them hell!!

      As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

      Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season.
