1) Not in the eyes of the AFL and Ch7:  membership/supporter numbers are the basis of their fixtures (despite their protestations to the contrary) for FTA premium time slots - Count the Thur, Fri and Sat night FTA slots for Ess, Coll, Rich, Carlt, Hawks even in their non-performing years.  Simply, Ch 7 want numbers to sell adv time to their sponsors.

Also, check out the venues those clubs play at - you rarely see them at low capacity grounds like Kardinia Park or Docklands when they play each other.  They play at our home ground while we have to sell games interstate or play at Docklands.

2) Not in the eyes of sponsors:  club sponsors want numbers to market their products to.   The more the merrier.  The profitability of the members is of little interest to them.  We make a lot more more money from sponsors than members so they are critical to our financial well being.  Again, look at the sponsorship revenue for the aforementioned clubs.  It is big because they have a lot of members!

3) Not in the eyes of clubs: once they have you as a member, even as an Armchair, or 3 gamer they can work to make you a full member and get your family on board.  (Without those membership options we may not have any country or interstate members).  Also, members buy merchandise, adding revenue to the club and revenue and advertising to our sponsors- anyone buy New Balance gear recently?

4) The more members we have the more people at games and so gate revenue goes up.

Looking at 'Net Profit' is a very limited view, especially as club costs are 'fixed' - effectively, any additional member is almost 100% profit (after allowing for making up and mailing membership packs).

The club would be ecstatic to break last years record so early and grow our membership by over 30% in 4 years.  We fans should share that excitement.  So, I don't see the point of introducing 'Net Profit' to this thread.  imv it simply isn't relevant to the thread nor to the value of increased membership numbers.  Enjoy the ride on and off the field!

Yeah interesting reply - thanks for taking the time.

We’ll pass the Doggies soon and if the Club gives a massive push, maybe we can all help recruiting members to get to 45,000 by the end of the Queen’s Birthday weekend? Beating Collingwood (and looking like certainties to finish Top Four) should build a nice momentum (to regain what we lost in the early matches)! 50,000 by end July cut-off should be our new realistic target! ??

How many games do we have at the MCG post bye.

A membership package that made those available irrespective of whether it is home or away might be a very good seller especially if it was marketed of the back of a QB win ....no emails before the game from the club please!!  Realistically I hope the promotions people are working at it because if we win on QB the lid will really be off.

This is a massive membership burst for this time of year compared to last year where there was only about 120 new members in this period. This year its over 1000. On the basis of previous years increases at this time of year we were heading for 43,500 but now it could hit 45,000.  Love PJ to go out on a 45000 membership. What a crowning achievement that would be to his reign and his legacy for the future of the Club.

But sadly I don't think we will reach any great heights this year.  I'm at a loss to understand why our membership is not increasing rapidly.  One wonders whether, even if we win a Premiership, we will reach the 'dizzy' heights of 50,000 members let alone the fantasy land 70,000 to 90,000 levels of the big clubs.

I blame the quiet removal of the Demon from all logos etc.

Bring back that 1970s Demon.

(Though I do like the new MFC logo)

Does the club have membership sign up booths at games?

I don't recall ever seeing one (although the last MFC game I was at before moving 1800km away was a long time ago).

If they don't, they should, and have sign up bonuses, like a free hat or beanie or scarf.

Timbo. Yes we have Marquees out side gate 3. They do have Eftpos machines to make payments.

Are you a member,? If not go online and book a country membership. or a 3 game membership.

It all adds to the numbers.

Getting closer to that 45,000 Daisy!

We haven't played at the MCG much in the last 6 weeks, and I think the Membership booth there is the best place to attract new members.

I'm hoping for a big sign-up outside gate three next Monday.

There has been a lot of publicity about what a great style of footy we play, and how we're likely to play deep into September. Surely that will attract a few late joiners.

Yep, Armchair member. I told them I wanted it to add to numbers and I understand it does.

Our closest ground is Metricon (90 mins) and Gabba (2.5 hrs) so a 3 game and country are no good for me.

Armchair I think gets us into one MCG game, so considering coming down from Ballina next year for QBW with son (4yo by then - Dees supporter against all odds, outlaws all CFC) and wife (Carringbush) for his first game at the G. Obviously tack a day Mt Buller onto that. Anyone know where to hire a Disco?

Armchair doesn’t get you into a game specifically, but they do occasionally send out a free ticket.

if we make 45k it would represent a yr to yr increase of 6.5%

Most footy clubs have an approx 15% membership churn as well.

Specifically states gets us into one MCG home game, by prior arrangement.

It would be utterly remarkable, and lend credence to the 'sleeping giant' fever dream we all have about the supporters that have been subdued by years of mediocrity emerging from the cold.

Well I’ll be a monkeys uncle! I was an armchair for years as my working life precluded me from attending most games and had no idea you could get 1 game access as part of the deal!

  • REPORT: Collingwood

The media focus on the fiery interaction between Max Gawn and Steven May at the end of the game was unfortunate because it took away the gloss from Melbourne’s performance in winning almost everywhere but on the scoreboard in its Kings Birthday clash with Collingwood at the MCG. It was a real battle reminiscent of the good old days when the rivalry between the two clubs was at its height and a fitting contest to celebrate the 2025 Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher and his superb work to bring the campaign to raise funds for motor neurone disease awareness to the forefront. Notwithstanding the fact that the Magpies snatched a one point victory from his old club, Daniher would be proud of the fact that his Demons fought tooth and nail to win the keenly contested game in front of 77,761 fans.

  • POSTGAME: Collingwood

Despite effectively playing against four extra opponents, the Dees controlled much of the match. However, their inaccuracy in front of goal and inability to convert dominance in clearances and inside 50s ultimately cost them dearly, falling to a heartbreaking one-point loss on King’s Birthday.
