Gaelic football seems more practical than AFL. There is too many grey areas in Australian Rules Football. It is nearly unplayable. I feel for the players having the play AFL.

Well it's on today.

Must admit that my first reaction was that same as many here - stupid meaningless game; don't get injured.  But after a bit of reflecting this morning, I'm really stoked for our boys to be represented in the team and will try and watch the game at some point, just to see how they fair.

What a turn around in the personal fortunes of the two players from the MFC.  Think about it, twelve months ago, Hibbo had just switched to our club after a ban from the sport, being labeled a drug cheat, Nev's career was well established, but from his B&F speach this year, it was clear there was some deep personal/family truma lurking in the background.  Both players have risen through the ranks the hard way from being rookie listed to represnting their country.

Full credit to our guys for their selection, whilst the game may not nessasrily be of a true/meaningful international standing, the AFL clearly picks it's team from the best available players in the country  (probably with a slight bias for those felt suited to the hybrid game) and I think that is a great honour.

Good luck to our boys today... oh, and don't get injured!

I’ll enjoy watching on the Tele today and I’ve been lucky enough to get a geurnsey in a box next week at Subiaco. Free beers and hopefully a bit of venison sounds good to me.

Hibberd had a game high 13 disposals in the first quarter. 

Australia taking a page out of the Dees playbook in  the second and taking a nap in the second quarter. 

I think this format has run its race well and truly. Hope the tickets were free.

Cannot see the financial or promotional reason for the game. Perhaps others could fill me in.

Smacks of desperation to be considered "international".

The Rugby League World Cup is miles better ... at least that has two teams and a couple of others to make it interesting

I heard an Aussie player was injured and taken for X-rays, any idea which player it was? 

I did notice Jetta and Hibberd walking around after the game.

Hibberd was great. I don't think this game suits Jetta as its not played man on man.

I don't understand the antipathy to these games.  The players seem keen to participate and it gives us something a bit different to watch during the annual footy drought.  If people think it is silly, they don't have to watch it (and if they don't like the ridiculous hype the commentators make about it, there is the volume switch thank god).  The injury rate seems pretty low, no worse than training.    The Irish get the advantage of the familiar round ball, Oz has the advantage of having fully professional super-fit players and tackling, though I wouldn't mind if tackling was not allowed.    

So what if it is a 'game that doesn't really exist'.  I can't get emotionally involved but am interested enough to watch it.  Better than many other 'real' sports.

I prefer it to Australian Rules in many ways. We've ruined our game.

Few years back went to Croke Park and close to the best atmosphere I've witnessed at a sporting event.

We pay Hibberd and Nev close enough to a $Mill a year to do a job for the MFC

A Club that has been starved of any success for 54 years. I do not like any of our players being put at extra exposure to injury, to a hybrid game that is not played anywhere except on these 2 occasions a year. 

State of Origin is a different matter. We remember those

I would love to see The Big V play South Australia in State of Origin again. I was at The ‘G in 1989. Amazing day. 

But it won’t happen again because there is too much money involved now.

Living in Qld and I get the impression that rugby league State of Origin is about as big as their grand final, both symbolicly and in terms of finances to the game.  I wonder if in AFL the players and possibly even their clubs were paid enough and or penalised for not making them selves available for selection, if it could be made a big specktical in the AFL again.  You listen to the way guys like Robbie Flower use to talk about the honour and opertunity to play State footy and you'd have to think that sort of motivation would still exist and if anything I would have thought the parochialism between the states has always been their from the fan's perspective.  Get all the gun players on the park and I recon they would pack out the G.

McAnallen was a champion Gaelic footballer who died from an undetected heart condition at the age of 24. He represented Ireland in three series of Compromise Rules, and following his death a number of GAA clubs in Australia adopted his name in their official title. A bit of respect for a champion sportsman wouldn't go amiss.

If it was just South Australia, State of Origin would be alive. But with more than 2 states involved the concept could never generate the same intensity as the NRL

Pity, but playing WA isn’t the same as South Australia..

Quite true.  It would however generate more intensity than this hybrid round ball nonsense.

Trouble is that all teams want to play Victoria. WA v SA or against an allies side just doesn’t work. 

NRL State of Origin is what it is because 2 neighbouring States absolutely hate each other. 

The good news is no injuries.

Apparently Pendles finger doesn't require surgery but yeah I'd hate it if he was a demon. 

Pendlebury injured his finger. The quoit was too tight for his usual greeting to an opponent working hard at the football.
