Young guy coming off the worst year off his life.

Looks a chance every time the ball comes in and look out for him next year if everything comes together he could be a game changer.

I am no clearer in my mind about what sort of a player he is going to be.  He's shown that he can be an athletic, high endurance, accumulating CHF in the mould of Nick Riewoldt, he's shown he is capable of being the rough and powerful, beast-like power forward in the mould of Jonathan Brown and he has shown the ability to be lethal and creative when the ball hits the turf, in the mould of Jeremy Cameron.  But so far immaturity, attitude, injury, health and significant off-field issues have interrupted his development.

And no stage this year did his contested marking get up and going, which was his absolute strength two years ago.  His best game this season against Port, saw most of his goals coming from spilled marks.  He doesn't seem to play the same role two weeks in a row, which goes a small way to explaining why I can't nail down exactly what sort of a player Jesse Hogan is.

 

For mine, he should be played as a traditional CHF and seek to model himself on Riewoldt.  He needs to use his endurance to move along the wings and swing into the forward 50 like Saint Nick did in his heyday.  This however requires fitness that goes beyond natural ability and a desire to run and work yourself into the ground on match day.  Too often Hogan appears to be anchored to the ground in the forward 30. 

 

This year, with all its short comings, was about much more than footy for Jesse.  No one can hold him responsible for anything that didn't play out on the field as it should have.  It's sobering to consider that even if we did make the finals, Jesse wouldn't be playing due to a hamstring injury in the final round.

Terrible year in every sense of the word.

So much to look forward to in the future.

We dont necessarily need 60-70 goals, we need him being the forward line General that moves up the ground and dictates where  our forwards move to. If he hangs his expectations on taking marks and kicking goals, well it's not going to work out for him on many an occasion throughout a match.

If we're playing TMAC forward, we only want him kicking set shots not having to link up and find a player forward with his disposal. 

With enough game time and no injuries, he will get there.

In summary Jesse needs to be in the top 2-5 players for goal assists in the entire AFL next year.

Excellent analysis.  

If he could "be a Tex Walker" it would be enormous for us.  A genuine on field leader who can deliver on a pretty regular basis.

There is one thought about all these Jesse's goin' home rumours that for mine persists and it's not absolutely about Hogan. It's about Freo. 

Lyon is bereft of consistent scoreboard pressure unlike the times when he had the services of Pavlich. 

To me JH is more valuable to Freo than he is actually to us

Im happy for him to stay. Im happy for the club to listen ( not canvass ) to offers. 

Its business. Deal with it all.

Our business is the winning of Premierships. Its irrelevant whos wearing the jumper at that time. Trust me , no one will care as we hold a cup up !!

Take aside what's happened this year, yes he's had the year from hell but the knocks on his game are unrelated to what's happened this year. So if we were to discuss Jesse Hogan based on his ability next year or the year after, will he still not be able to take a pack mark, struggle to kick over 30-35 metres and will he still struggle for accuracy when having a shot on goal. Whilst watching the finals over the last 2 weeks I find my self wondering how Hogan would go, if fully fit and playing for any other side. In round 22 he kicked 6 against the Brisbane Lions, 5 of them were 10-15 metres out directly in front. But as we know in the finals the pressure reaches a new level, so far in the finals this year key forwards : 

Week 1

Crows v Giants 

Tex 1.3, Jenkins 1.1, Lynch 1.0, McGovern 1.0, Patton 0.2, Cameron 0.1, Lobb 0.1.

Cats v Tigers 

Riowoldt 1.3, Taylor 1.1, Hawkins 1.0

Swans v Bombers 

Buddy 4.1, Sinclair 3.1, Reid 0.0, Danniher 3.0

Port v Eagles 

Dixon 3.6, Darling 3.0, Kennedy 3.0, Petrie 2.0

Week 2 

Cats v Swans 

Hawkins 1.0, Buddy 0.3

Giants v Eagles

Patton 2.2,  Kennedy 1.1, Darling 1.0

In week 1 of the finals not 1 key forward in the top 4 four teams could manage more than 1 goal with many not even getting multiple shots on goal. When the bottom 4 teams of the 8 played we had 7 key forwards score multiple goals. In week 2 only Patton kicked multiple goals and he kicked 2. When the heat is on some very talented players are finding it tough. 

If I posted on the trading board we should pick up a key forward for 800k a year but then went on to list his weaknesses as the same as Hogans I'd be laughed at. Yes he's a great 1 on 1 contested mark, yes he's got a great tank but if I'm paying a key  forward 800k plus a year I want him to be able to take a pack mark, be able to load up from outside fifty and be a reasonable shot on goal. How soon if at all could Hogan fix these issues with his game? 

If he's thinking of going home and Freo are offering 2 first round picks I'd probably be taking that deal and in turn using those picks to obtain established players.

Many reckon JW is the conundrum of the club...I reckon JH is.

Don't think I've ever seen a year from hell quite like this one. 

Would love to see him push out to CHF a bit more. Really hard to say what's in store for Jesse next season. An average or poor season will see us lose out on the investment. A great year and then he'll go into the final year of his contract with the big question yet again. Unfortunately I'm in the camp with others who think he'll probably leave at the end of this contract.

If it was a choice between the two BB I'd keep Watts. With Watts we know what we've got, with Hogan there's a bit of what we think we've got with him and what we actually have/potential. If Hogan was to leave we could ask for and get 2 first round picks where as I think Watts worth to the team is greater than what we would get in return for him.

If Hogan was to leave we should target Peter Wright.

It's a very interesting crossroad in the evolution of our current list.

Who'se Ross Lyon Sinner or Saint ?

This is good, people seeing beyond the Hogan interpretation of our forward line.

I keep saying he's fragile. Our latest version of Kelvin Templeton (remember him?) although his non-performance was linear, Jesses's is multifold.

I love the guy, etc. but he can go of it gives us a better scoreline ATEOTD.

The Club has invested heavily in JH, but I not sure we see any significant return on that investment at this stage.

However, good big men do take time to develop and I would hate to think our Clubs investment in JH development benefits another AFL Club.

See how he goes in 2018 which should give him some finals experience. Fingers crossed as there is no certainty with the MFC current team that they will make the finals next year.

My dad is an 82 year old Demon and i will be shattered if we do not see a flag together, so i can sympathize if Jesse’s immediate career is a bit hap hazard. 

What i cannot work out is where to play him, as it is definately not near the goalsquare. 

But then are there positions on the ground anymore within the modern game

how do we maximize the talents of Jesse Hogan?

TMac goalsquare, leveraging his accurate kicking, and he just has to focus on goals. Hogan CHF where we can leverage his vision and ability to bring others into the contest. Assuming Watts goes we need someone with some vision and footy smarts high half forward.

I think you are right. Hogan may well play Watts role very well. I have always liked Jesse “on the roam” He is very mobile for his size

He wants to play up the ground and now he definitely can - in fact he will need to. I hope they give him a consistent role and allow him to settle into some running and leading patterns and get the team used to it to.

Because if this bloke is leading into space on centre wing then you really don't need that extra handball to a completely free bloke on the halfback flank - you need to kick the ball onto his advantage side and get numbers to his feet and running past him.
