Don't know much about this young fella, hope it works out for all , but a couple of bells are ringing. We only need A graders now and we can be a little 'Sandringham Centric ' at times.

I disagree. We need to generate depth for years to come, not just focus on the 2018 and 2019 seasons. Keep in mind, Vince, Lewis, and Jones may only have a year or two left. We also need to improve the list at every turn, whether that's at the bottom end or top end. If Balic replaces and improves the position (increasing spot competition) of say Trengove or Kennedy from this year, JKH or Johnstone next year, so be it, it's a win. What do you think the probability is to draft "a star" with or between our picks of 45 and 63?

Viv Michie, Ben Newton, Ben Kennedy, Aiden Riley, and countless others. Not sure why this club keeps thinking it can make AFL players from other teams' state league players. We've proven time and again that we're not up to the task. Good luck to Balic if he comes on board, but the odds are well and truly against him.

Under the current regime, we seem to have done quite well with the likes of Hannan and Pedersen.

We are a sad lot! With all respect to young Balic, he's hardly a household name at Freo, as indicated by the number of games he's played for them. I look at the players linked to other, more successful clubs, and shake my head in wonder.

Apart from Lever - and what a great get he will be, if we get him - we are still not a destination club.

When the Dockers Footy Manager (Lloyd) was interviewed (on departure) and asked about Balic he confirmed he wants to return to Melbourne, but we haven't caught up with the MFC, so we'll do that tomorrow.

I know it's been referenced, but It's now clear Balic has chosen Melbourne.

Tbh, am keen for any player whose surname rhymes with Jakovich.

Every team takes chances on other teams cast offs. We really had no midfield when Michie, Newton and Riley came on board, all worth a go. Ben Kennedy we swapped in for Toumpas. Hardly a costly move and if our list hadn't progressed we could've easily played him more and kept him for another year.

As for Balic being a state league player, in his second year this year:

2 state league games, 4 AFL games before a lay off with personal leave, then first game back in 8 weeks in the WAFL he had 27 touches. He's a promising youngster and the concern is more his injury and personal stuff than him being a state league talent.

Is the surname pronounced Ba-lick or Ba-lich?

The former.

This deal could be done pretty quickly, unless we are looking at combining it with another player, theirs or ours.

Freo apparently asking for pick 27 for Balic. Would maybe explain the hold up

For real, 27? I'm clueless when it comes to drafts and points systems but surely not.

I just read Impey became a Hawk for pick 31 and some swaps later on in draft.

27 seems rich.

Not having a go at you by the way, just the asking price.

No way that will happen.

Will be a 3rd pick at most.

All good mate, its all rumour and innuendo until proven and was just taken off a twitter page. I would've thought we'd do this deal first perhaps though

Give we traded so soon for Lever, surely we have something else brewing other than Balic.

I'd say so. Mahoney says we don't have much else on the go, but he did the same the year we got Melksham and all of sudden we had pick 4 and 9.

Yeah. Don't think we will land a player. I think we will trade into the first round of either this year or next year. Something along those lines.

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.

After five consecutive defeats, the Demons have now notched up back-to-back victories, comfortably accounting for the Tigers in the traditional ANZAC Eve clash. They surged to a commanding 44-point lead early in the final quarter before easing off the pedal, resting skipper Max Gawn and conceding the last four goals of the game to close out a solid 20-point win.
