CASEY SCORPIONS v FOOTSCRAY BULLDOGS - VFL FINALS WEEK 1

Will be interested to see team selection later tonight to see how many of our 20 eligible players are made available for finals. Already heard whispers that Pedersen has been sent in for early surgery.

Would be good to see the likes of Weideman, Oliver, Salem, Nibbler and Hulett win a premiership as well as some of the older heads in Trengove, Grimes, Dunn & Garland.

I'll be heading along saturday, hopefully to finally see us win a final. Despite us making finals every year since the alignment began back in 2009 bar once and having two top 4 finishes.

Would be nice to see the boys hopefully win some silverware. Is the Vfl finals format the same as the Afl?

Playing Oliver last week when he clearly could have been in the Melbourne side was a strong sign that Melbourne intend on allowing players to play Casey finals this year.

A shot at a flag would be a great reward for the players who have been busting a gut there all year, just to remain on the far fringe on the main side. Especially for those who won't be in the AFL system next year.

Based on who is available, if our team looks something like this I'll be very happy:

White Hutchins Garland
Grimes Dunn Michie
Salem ANB Kennedy
Spencer Oliver Trengove
JHK T. Smith Hulett
Newton Weideman Terlich

IC:  J. Smith M. Jones Max King Keilty McInerney Morris Munro Scott

Not a bad 2's side at all....

That'd beat our seniors hahaha

If true that's a strong indication Pedo will be a Demon next year.

2pm @ Casey Fields BBO.

True home ground advantage.  Need to make the most of it.

I wonder if there will be any resentment if all the spots are given to MFC players and some Scorp regulars miss out.

There is that risk.  Then on the flip side, you don't play enough of your players and get beaten, then they can resent you just as much.....

Thanks for the update Angry but I'll hope they win this one and watch them when they are a bit closer to home.

I think the regular Casey seniors (Hutchins, Smith, Morris etc) will all find a spot anyway over MFC lessers like King or Smith.

Other than that, it's a bit of tough luck - they would know what they signed up for when signing for an AFL aligned team. All the MFC players eligible to play have contributed to the strong Casey season so far anyway.

Can the Bulldogs load up on players considering AFL have the bye?

The good thing is they play next Thursday night, they might go the opposite and rest players that are borderline for senior selection

You've hit the nail on the head, why would they risk anyone in the VFL with only a 5 day break, particularly coming off a flight back from Perth, then another to Perth. They've also got the double chance, so I think it's more likely they'll be very conservative rather than go all out for the win. Still their list will stand up pretty well even missing a few that are borderline seniors.

Only if the players are eligible, the cupboard is pretty bare for the Doggies with so many injuries.

I would be great for our younger boys to get exposure to finals footy even if it is at VFL level, Breeding success from the bottom up !!!

My understanding of the rule and not well educated on it, is if the AFL side is still playing all listed players are eligible

Can someone else work this jargon out?  Hurts my head.

Clause a is easy, you have to have played at least one VFL game.

Clauses b, c and d relate to the Development League and can be ignored.

Clauses e and f are only applicable if your AFL team is still playing; ours isn't.

Clause g is the only one that counts; you must have played at least one VFL game, Senior or Development, and not played more than 12 AFL games.

The most interesting point is g(j) which has been used several times in the past; the CEO of AFL Victoria can declare anybody eligible.

pi$$ poor, especially in a weekend of no afl games

Looked at the Dogs' team, seems like they only have about 8 listed players, no Stringer. Fair to say it looks like an easy win by selections

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
