stuie 7,374 Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 The 40 man squad has been announced, only Gawn made it for us... Adelaide: Eddie Betts, Daniel Talia, Rory Laird, Josh Jenkins, Rory Sloane, Tom Lynch Carlton: Sam Docherty, Kade Simpson Collingwood: Scott Pendlebury, Adam Treloar Fremantle: Lachie Neale Geelong: Patrick Dangerfield, Joel Selwood, Corey Enright Gold Coast Suns: Tom Lynch GWS Giants: Stephen Coniglio, Toby Greene, Callan Ward, Tom Scully, Heath Shaw Hawthorn: Jack Gunston, Cyril Rioli, Sam Mitchell Melbourne: Max Gawn North Melbourne: Robbie Tarrant Port Adelaide: Jasper Pittard Richmond: Alex Rance, Dustin Martin St Kilda: Jack Steven Sydney Swans: Lance Franklin, Dan Hannebery, Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker, Dane Rampe West Coast Eagles: Andrew Gaff, Josh Kennedy, Jeremy McGovern, Luke Shuey Western Bulldogs: Marcus Bontempelli, Matthew Boyd.
kieranbj 111 Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 I think it is fair that Gawny the only one from us. Half way through Jack Viney would have not just been in the squad but the 22 but his second half of the season was just not as strong. Gee it stings to see the name Scully in there....
Demon Jack 7,196 Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 Seems about right that only Gawn is the only player named from the Dees. Viney and Watts both had stellar years but were probably a bit too inconsistent at times to make the top 40. Regardless, first time in six years we've been relevant in the AA discussion! Well done Maxy on a brilliant season!

Deevolution 103 Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 Max will be joined by Tyson & Hogan next year as our development progresses
Ted Lasso 19,586 Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 Closest to the pin? i reckon... Enright Rance Mcgoven Shaw Tarrant Rampe Hannebry Dangerfield Shuey Rioli Franklin Martin Betts Kennedy(wce) Lynch(gc) Gawn Sloane Parker Selwood, Mitchell, Kennedy (syd) Bontempelli
What 18,810 Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 Confirms that Gawny will make the AA team. Awesome stuff.
pitchfork 181 Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 Jetta not being in the squad is a joke. Its an all star team - not an attempt to name a realistic lineup.
Adam The God 30,752 Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 Urgh. Bontempelli. The most overrated player in the league. Gee, he's a good player. Gets 24 touches and kicks a goal. Is that seriously good enough to be in the 40 man AA squad? It just shows that the selectors have been swept up in the media hysteria pedaling his overinflated worth. Glad for Gawny though. He's been a shoe in for the last month.
What 18,810 Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 If your name is Pendlebury you get an automatic spot every season even if you dont deserve it

His game down at Geelong wasn't too flash either, but I'd say the team was already sorted by then.
poita 3,945 Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 Congrats to Max, a worthy selection. McDonald and Watts are the only others I would have given some chance to, and Watts' finish to the year was poor. I'm not sure McDonald is as far off the pace of Rance and McGovern as some around here seem to think.
Ted Lasso 19,586 Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 I reckon next year, if either Viney or Tyson can hold their best form for most of the year they'll get in there. both have played half seasons and that's probably going to be enough to get them top 10 B&F finishes for us.
Gator 18,055 Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 I wouldn't have had Pendlebury or Scully. Zac Merrett had a better year than Scully.

Congratulations Max, amazing achievement to do exactly what he wanted to do in his first full season - become the best ruckman in the competition. It's a testament to his will power and dedication to the club and his own goals. Here's hoping he'll take his game to yet another level in 2017.
Little Goffy 14,975 Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 For a moment I was a little disappointed that Nev didn't get a mention even in the extended squad, but then I looked closer and realised that there are no 'true' small defenders in the entire list. Just the sweeping rebounding types like Simpson and Shaw. Not taking anything from those players, but it interesting that according to the 'wisest selectors in the game' (herp) there is no longer a place for small defenders.
Soidee 1,496 Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 Gawn...congratulations for stellar season. To me it s a sad reflection on our remaining senior players. Nathan Jones has never made the AA even in his best years. Sadly for NJ I think his ability is not AA, and he carries too much baggage from the bad old days. It also shows that all our mid tier senior players are also rans and not AA ability. We have too much inconsistency at the leadership level, and this must be a priority for 2017. the Farce of his AA team is Pendlebury! Given to him on a plate for an ordinary season. The selectors let themselves down with such nonsense, this is just BS that he deserves a spot in this years team.
iv'a worn smith 1,979 Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 No doubt big Maxy deserves this, but I also get the sense that the AA team is not just about football ability, but an individual's marketability as well. Max not only has had a great year, but he is also somewhat of a media darling ................ oh, and it also helps if your team is winning crucial games, which get you into finals. How can they leave Nick Riewoldt out of the squad of 40, over Jack Gunston. Gunston, even by his standards, has had an ordinary year. There you go, I just contradicted myself. Anyway, well done big fella. Richly deserved.
P-man 13,367 Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 Scully and Gaff seem to be selections to meet a certain quota for wingmen. Pendlebury deserves selection in the squad. A victim of his own standards. If he makes the 22 it's a different story. Viney is a bit stiff to miss the squad but Merrett is undoubtedly the unluckiest player. His omission makes me happy. Essendon fans were feeling a little too happy with themselves for my liking.

Deestroy All 14,266 Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 I hope Scully makes the team. Hope Max has a big night on the drink. As they line up on stage, memories of China come flooding back all over Tom.
