Two things about Hibberd.

The first is that the DL camp who have highlighted him as a good pick-up have underestimated (ignored) one of his main ingredients that he adds to our list - a left foot defender. At present we have Salem and Wagner as our only two left-footers back there while sides like Hawthorn and Sydney have quite a few. Wagner is handy but not a thumping kick like Hibberd, while most of us would like to see Salem tried in the midfield. So Hibberd's acquisition is huge and those that watched him pre-2016 know that he's as tough as nails and will be part of our back seven (six plus one interchange).

The other is I don't quite get why we want to try and trade out of next year's draft already. Perhaps some have got cocky after our improved showing with a young list, but there's no guarantee that we won't slide a little next year as we wait for our young squad to fully mature. And when we grabbed an extra pick last year (for Weideman), we were told by the club that the 2016 draft was shaping as being a little thin. And there's also no obvious other trades on the horizon this year, but next year we may want to use our second round pick - just as we do this year.

One can only presume that our maestro Jason Taylor now is keen on a couple of players who may fall in that 20-30 bracket.

But there are ways of getting back to the second round, even if we have to trade our current pick for Hibberd.

For example - Dunn to Brisbane should net us the Lions third round pick 49.

We then can go after the Gold Coast's pick 25 or 29 on the basis that trading them our two third rounders (picks 46 and 49) will actually earn them more points to be used for either Jack Bowes or Brad Scheer.

I think this loophole of collating picks for points has been halted.

The league on Monday night ruled that clubs could enter this year’s draft only with the number of selections that matched the number of open spots on their list.

So you would be happy to burn a player who has nominated us as his club of choice, [censored] off the new coach coz he is the one who has obviously pushed out the boat for Hibberd, just to prove we have a bigger dick at the trade table?

Do your research before posting Saty. The same player has said he's happy to stay at the bombers if the trade doesn't work out. The player will survive either way. It's the nature of the business. It's not about burning, it's about doing what's best for the club. Do you actually want that to happen or are you simply happy for us to give in to what Essendon wants because you've taken that stance?

I saw that he said it, but it is still not a good look in my opinion, yes everybody would get over it, I think Hibberd will be a good addition to the list, I also trust the FD to get it right, if we weren't interested Mahoney would have stood in front of the cameras and said so, why drag it out?

It is taking a while for this to sink in with some people. Not negotiable!

Let's certainly hope so

Essendrug have player on their list who doesn't want to be there, they should be satisfied with any deal they can get

The general consensus, from a 'pedantic' point of view, was that the issue was over, it was then revived politically with the subsequent consequences, when you say Demonland foresaw it, what you meant to say was that all the 'haters' on here wanted it to happen

wrong again. i won't explain it in detail because you'll just go off on another strawman anyway

You obviously didn't read the Thread discussions on the Drug Saga from day 1

Many of us knew that players would get Banned eventually, but of course you won't believe that...

It's called 'getting the best deal for the club'. Not everyone is happy to cave in to opposition demands quickly. It may be the only deal we do in trade week. Fortunately Mahoney, TViney and Taylor are doing what is best for the club. It may be this year's second rounder, maybe not, but explore all options first. He wants out to us, it's in our favour ATM.

No go on explain it, I like a robust discussion, so where I am wrong in my opinion, the appeal was politicially motivated in my opinion, the 'hater's on here wanted it to happen they didn't forsee it........do you have concrete proof that it wasn't politically motivated? I am not strawmanning your position, on the contrary you seem to be doing that to me

Honestly, why do you post on this forum? You obviously hold Demonlanders in contempt.

I don't hold people in contempt, I leave that to others on this forum

I have an attitude that this is footy, nobody dies, but I also have strong opinions on a lot of issues in footy, if other posters don't like them I don't really care, as long as I am allowed to express them

Everybody is also allowed an opinion, but if I don't agree with it, I will post why I don't agree, don't mind a bit of robust discussion and there are a lot of posters on here who can do exactly that without resorting to name calling etc which is what a forum is about

I just find 'hate' too strong a word when you are talking about footy, perhaps it is a generational thing, coz I hear outside in day to day as well, which I find rather sad

On Hibberd to stay on topic, if we get a deal done, great, but I am sure it will be a deal that both clubs will think of as a win

As for the drugs issue, the fact the pretty blonde tennis player had her ban reduced says it all for me about the drug agencies

they want our second round this year; we've offered second round next year.

it'll go back and forth and be thrown around how to get it done and then one way or the other it'll happen, primarily cos they need his contract off their books due to all their new deals for various peptide payments to players like hurley et al who were out of contract.

Name calling is your specialty "precious".

And where did I use the term 'hate'? Straw man arguement as usual.

Look, if your opinion is that we give EFC what they want in order to get the deal done quickly, so be it. It may be the only deal we do this trading period. The rest of us are prepared to tough it out and see what the club can do.

I have thought all along our 2nd rounder next year is a better deal. Not sure why Mahoney ever talked our pick this year unless it was to avoid focus on the issue.

We lost Melksham for a year. The bombers can wait until next year for the Hibberd pick.

Half a chance it ends up a better pick anyway.

But for us we need to get in to this draft and there's every chance an even draft a kid we rated in the top 15 or so gets to 28. Too important to give that up.

My info was that the deal was done for our 2nd rounder this year.

If that is true, we have reneged if we are offering next years'.

Maybe we are feeling a bit miffed that Melksham got banned and that we over paid.

Maybe it will still be this years' 2nd round but with a later pick back to us.

Still think it will be done soon.

think you'll find that we only ever talked of around about (unqualified) 2nd rounder. i.e. it was open to interpretation

We didn't, it came from Essendon.

Maybe because that's the outcome they were after, not necessarily ours. They may have leaked it to the media to suit themselves.

Giving up our 2nd rounder this year has never made sense. The developments today makes me hopeful that we'll have a pick under 30 this year.

I don't think Redleg is referring to it being leaked to the media.
