Absolutely.  We will still have picks in the draft and, as you say, we got Jayden late in the draft.  We've been very good getting players in the third and fourth round, so I'm sure we will have some picks there.  I just think we can use our higher picks to get in some of that experienced talent to go with what we have.

I am curious, as to whether we can gain some useful picks by trading players, who are surplus to our needs.

I actually think the Bombers are quite happy for Hibberd to go, as I am told that they refused to match our offer, both in dollar terms and years, which would have seen him stay a Bomber. They used a lot on Hurley and the others and one clearly had to go to make room. Now of course, he is the greatest player that ever lived.

Like some others on DL, I am still not sold on him, but he could be useful with that long left foot kick.

However, I am a real fan of Taylor and trust him to find us a gem.

No, the bare minimum, mate. But I agree. We need to fill the void of experience on our list over the next 2-3 off seasons, whilst also keep developing 3-4 young kids down at Casey. 

I'd also say we're looking for players in that 23-27 age bracket as well as the 25-28 age bracket.

I think this is the key to sustained success. We can't just put all our chips on this one generation coming through now in Tyson, Viney, Hogan, Weideman, Oliver, Petracca, Brayshaw, Hunt and Salem (wow, I love writing that). We need to continue nailing these 3rd and 4th rounders and our first rounders when we have them. This will keep us up the top even after these guys have retired.  

What might break all this is your last sentence. If we continue to trade away our first rounders for experienced players there's the danger of becoming North, so we have to find a balance somewhere in there.

Yeah, I should have clarified further that I don't want us to do it every year.  I just think we're at a good stage where some extra experience will really help us moving forward and it seems like the right time to do it.  Next year, in what they are saying is a strong draft, it would be good to hold on to the picks unless a good, young player becomes available.

Agreed. We'll also (hopefully) be in an even stronger position to lure a good young player with the promise of finals and something more.

Heath Shaw was 28 when he played his first game at GWS.  How has that turned out for them ?

Heath Shaw is their general down back.  He organises teammates and uses the footy well out of defence.  How often do you see him in a midfield rotation ?  Answer - never.

How often is Grant Birchall in Hawthorn's midfield rotation ?  Answer - never.

Hibberd will be a terrific mature pick up in a young team with an even younger backline.

Rumored superdraft ( not that rumors mean much ofc), and we cannot afford to become Norf. they went too early with top ups, something we cant afford to do.

Experience IS required, especially if Lamumba, Dawes, Dunn etc leave/are pushed, but we should only trade out future first rounders if the deal is much better than could normally be expected ( Or fills a massive need ).

I don't think there's much chance of us becoming like north. I'm pretty sure we only have 1 player over 30 years of age? We've been playing as the youngest side in the Comp for around half of the season. 

If the club can identify players like Hibberd or Bernie Vince I think it would go a long way to pushing this team towards finals. Our midfield is getting close to being complete & will mature again this preseason. The areas of weakness are outside run, skilled ball users & a second ruck/forward ruck. You could also say CHB is not covered off either as Frost is not proven & looks shakes at times, same could be said of Oscar.

I'd be happy if the club targeted experienced players in some of those positions to attempt to complete the list. I should add, so long as they don't target a player like Vickery & continue with their ok record of picking up experienced players.

My point was they're all coming through at the same time. Fast forward 8 years into the future...

Since Frost has played down back he has partnered up extremely well with TMac. Frosts pace has stopped the leaks of over the back easy goals to the opposition.

Is Hibb a "general down back"? Maybe I've just not seen him enough but Fletch was always the general I thought. I do think he's going to be a really good pick up if he comes over to us.

Shaw was a general at the pies and he's a general at the Giants.

 

Hibberd is a solid foot soldier. He'd absolute be best 22 for 14 or so sides I would guess, including ours, but I fear we will way overpay for a solid player who is limited to only playing one position.

You'll have to get over your obsession with one position.

Rampe - one position; Enright - one position; Shaw - one position; Laird - one position; Birchall - one position; Docherty - one position; Zac Williams - one position; Neville Jetta - one position ...

If you don't think Hibberd is good enough that's fine, but I'd lose the concerns over "one position".  Although I'll add that he came 4th in their B&F in 2014, which was a year they played finals.  The description "foot soldier"  suggests to me that you're not overly familiar with the player.  At 27 he's in his prime.

I've also never worried about a player's pay.  I'll back the club to manage the finances within the salary cap.

It's more what we give up to get him that concerns me.

 

I think he'll help us add depth and skill, but I still say he's a solid but unspectacular player. Same as his old buddy Melksham who I would argue has more variable attributes which makes him a more beneficial depth player, whereas Hibberd should be a lock-down best half-back.

 

However, he is completely one-sided and limited in terms of flexibility in a game that is increasingly becoming about variety of roles that can be played and skills that can be executed.

 

If we pay more than our 2017 second round pick we've been gypped.

Almost all players these days are completely one sided so that is a moot point.

His advantage is he is a left footer which is very important from the hb line as it so often opens options up the field as players instinctively cover the right side. I have no doubt it is key reason were keen on him. That and the fact he can consistently hit targets 50-60 metres away meaning he can kick over the zone and put players like braysue, trac, kent and garlett running into space in our forward 50. This is a key wlement of our game plan

With Gold Coasts departures they'll be a bit lighter on in the midfield and may want to move Kolodjashnij in there. That would then free up the 3rd tall defender slot who can also play small when needed.

Garland fots this build, and for an experienced player who's been in another clubs leadership group, Gold Coast may be willing to fall 5 spots in the 2nd round given the amount of picks they have?
