I find all this talk about the next Captain pretty offensive and irrelevant whilst our current Captain is 27 years old....and doing a fine job. 

If anyone deserves to lead this team, and take us up the ladder, it's Jonesy

Not sure Watts has "leadership" credentials. He's well-liked and popular, but is he dominating, empowering, demanding?

I don't think it's offensive at all. I think it's a reflection on how far Watts has come in the last 12-18 months. I haven't seen anyone say "sack Jones as captain" just put forward their ideas on who the next captain could be.

I reckon Jones will captain for as long as he likes because the boys love him, I see it being about another couple of years before we seriously have to worry about it.

talk of Watts being our next captain is ridiculous, Viney by a mile, not even close.

Forgetting that our captain still has many miles left in the legs and Viney looks like a stand up starter for the gig when the time is right,  I am astounded that a player who for the whole of his career has had enormous scrutiny and pressure ( some fair - a lot, over the top)  poured on him, had a season and bit where he has finally blossomed and we are talking about him being captain ????

Why on earth would anyone contemplate doing that to him ?

Viney is the obvious choice.

Watts into the LG next year.

The question on my mind is whether Watts is a sneaky chance of AA selection this year.

 

For once can we not throw the captain title at anyone playing career best footy? Whether its viney, watts, hogan or tom mac, jones has a few good years left and is clearly doing a marvellous job. 

Its such a melbourne supporter thing to do. Just leave it be and let the FD do their job.

It's the last thing he needs, he can be a leader without the title. He's having a great season, leave him be, the club are too smart to repeat the Grimes/ Trengove captaincy fiasco.

Should he be made captain of the MFC? No, he doesn't appear to possess that bit of " bastard" needed by a leader, and which is possessed as far as I can tell by J.Viney. But I think he would do well in the leadership group. He appears to care about the club and he appears to care about the other players.

Jack doesn't need the captaincy. He can lead in his own way, and should remain focussed on his game.

Gerard Whately on 774 did a hypothetical after the season ended about 5 years ago. In that, Jack Watts was predicted to be captain of a successful premiership team at Melbourne.

You are either trolling or haven't heard him interviewed of late.  Go and read the 'Demons in the Media' thread and listen or watch some of those interviews.  He is thoughtful, honest without giving too much away, courteous, knowledgeable, praises teammates, never shows signs of cockiness and at times funny.  And he is only 22!

Jack is relaxed when interviewed and has the 'drawl' of some in his generation.  To interpret that as doesn't seem too bright is just ridiculous!

Twenty-two is very young. Viney will mature a lot over the coming years, but have to say what is the rush? Sure he might say all the right things, but he's still a kid. Time and experience will teach him that. Chunk has a bit of time left. Watts certainly is a leader. Watch him with the boys at training. As Mahoney has said, by showing what he is on the field he is backing up his natural ebullient manner with clutch actions.

Hey Swooper, have another look at my post you quote.  It was not about Jack and the captaincy.    I quoted and commented on 'Diamonds' post: Viney doesn't seem too bright when interviewed.

He is inaccurate and it could not be left unchallenged.

Agree, his Year 12 results tell us that he is very bright. I can't remember his score but it was very high. 

(Just like when we lose big), when we win big, some really outlandish comments are made.

'Tis only speculation.  Everyone says Viney, sure, but realistically Jonesy will be there for a couple of more years at least and Jack Viney will still be a little young for that role, hence the possibility of a Watts.  Captains stand up in tough games and Watts this year has shown he can be a sole glow when the heat is up.  I think he'd relish the chance to lead.  

But Viney seems the obvious choice in the long term.

I made the mistake many moons ago of not plumping for Jones as captain ( at the time of Trengove/Grimes) by judging his capabilities based on his rather inane surfing tweets. ( I formally apologise again Jonesy)

Firstly - I don't agree with how Viney comes across when he is interviewed but more importantly  - how a captain interviews is far down the list of what is expected of a good captain. 

No matter whether Jack Watts is captain or not his last 5 minutes in the game was sensational watching his delivery to Pederson and Tyson twice for goals was the reason we were able to celebrate the win.

Has anyone noticed of late how many press interviews Dom Tyson has done. With his good form of late and a new coach coming in I think he will be in the leadership group next season and may be ahead of Viney and Watts. Jonesy will be 29 next Jan and the job is his for as long as he likes but the leadership team will be critical. Listening to radio today the talk was of how on field leaders direct players, adjust their positioning and ensure players stick to what is drilled into them. Our on field leaders were slow to react yesterday against Carlton and not for the first time this year. Gibbs, Simpson and Armfield are their to guide the younger ones.

I can see Tyson filling this role. Who in our young group can be the strategist and general on field? WE are so young. Viney may be the young bull but is he able to position players and maintain structures when he is concentrating so hard on his own game. All of the experienced players like Grimes, Trengove, Dunne and Garland cannot get a game and Bernie is prone to some brain fades. I was seriously impressed with Jayden Hunt's post match interview and his reading of what went wrong. 

It is a challenge for Goodwin to find on field generals who can implement his plans. Thoughts anyone

i'd be surprised if tyson ever got the captaincy/vice captaincy role. he's classy and a smooth mover, but doesn't exactly get his hands dirty and 'lead by example'.. i think our leader should have a fair bit of aggression. tyson has no aggression. he's gonna be a very good player though, if he can maintain his current output.

I think Jack Viney will be our next captain. Is the most logical choice. Sticks out like a beacon. He leads on field through his actions, and demands high standards (both on and off the field), is vocal, isn't critical, and has shown a willingness to listen/learn (as mentioned by Roos several times). In addition, I think the players look up to Viney. Not saying Watts wouldn't also do a reasonable job, but Viney appears relentless in his pursuit for team improvement.
